What is the best detergent to use in a U.S. TOL Bosch Dishwasher? Currently using Cascade Complete Gel Packs and wondering if there is something more effective. This is my first dishwasher that only allows for one detergent wash and I'm still getting used to this machine.

My vote is Finish Quantum Packs.

Does this machine have a built in water softener? I also like the Finish Quantum packs or the Finish 3 in 1 tabs but have found with very soft water they cause foaming which can inhibit wash arm movement.

If the water is very soft, I like using a powder (Finish or Cascade) where I can control the dosage better than with tablets/packets.

What do you mean it only allows for a 1 detergent wash?  Does it do a pre-wash( or in the USA it is thought of as a pre-rinse) or does every cycle  just start with a main wash?

Jerrod, if you will go pull up an owners manual for a current Bosch dishwasher, most likely you will see it only has provisions for one detergent dispenser.  That's quite common in european dishwashers.  From what I've understood, it's actually not needed to a 2 cup dispenser.  It's extremely rare I use the pre-wash cup on my Kenmore Elite, I find it's not needed.  and you know how I BobLoad.  Besides, it might be a little bit much in the opposite direction, but I'd rather the machine have food residue left for the main wash so that the detergent eats away at the food and not my racks or seals in the machine.  I've never had racks wear out in any dishwasher I've owned and I've owned two thus far.  The Kenmore is my 3rd.  The Hotpoint that came with the house doesn't count since it was so pathetic, it didn't stay in the house for just under 3 years and I lived with it for 16 months.

Finish 3-in-1 tabs (blue, white, red ball) work great in my Bosch in hard SoCal water.

I might add that I stay away from the gel-packs because sometimes they are too tall/thick for the detergent door to close properly. I bought some for my parents' KA dishwasher and found their dispenser door wouldn't close completely, so I took them home and used them here. Finish tabs however fit their dispenser perfectly.

I get the bulk pack (100 tabs) at Costco. I don't remember the price but it was something on the order of $12.00, hence about 12 cents per wash. Not as cheap as HE powder detergents, but reasonable.
