Looks like Friday the 13th turned out to be a winner! Finally, after searching for the last 5 years, I found these on CL for $75! Clean, low use units from a vacation cottage. They have no rust anywhere! washer was made the 22nd week of '68 and dryer 36th week of '68.

Very cool. Is the Woodgrain factory original, or an owner added it? Very impressive either way, congratulations.
By 1968, are these large tub machines?

That's how they came from the factory!

HOLY MACKEREL!

kenmoreguy64's profile picture
These appear to be clones of the machines I got for Kevin a year or two ago from Arizona. WOW! Right down to the color. His were in a snow-bird's cottage too.

These are standard tub machines. In 1968, WP was building large capacity machines, but until 1974 or so, they were special, one model in the line type things for custom needs. I know that some large cap. models sold in good volume, but it was the mid 1970s before WP and Kenmore had matching dryers and multiple models in line from BOL to TOL all in this capacity.

These machines look really nice!

Fantastic!

You just gotta love those Woodgrain Whirlpools and Caprice Estate wagons!

Don't know how well they sold, Whirlpool spent a good bit of money advertising this set.

I have only ever seen these in avacado, wonder if this was the only color that came with the woodgrain?

I don't like the woodgrain. It looks like it's just tacked on and not of a high quality contact paper to begin with. IMHO, it makes great looking machines look cheap.

1968 IMPERIAL MARK 12 PAIR

combo52's profile picture

Wow another pair of these turned up, these would also be a dream pair for me. I do have the gas dryer in coppertone with wood overlays already so the washer would suffice. The real simulated wood paneling was a one year thing only on the TOL Mark 12 pair. The machines were sold in white, avocado and edged coppertone, Harvest gold did not make its appearance till 1969, at least in WP laundry products. This washer and dryer were designed so the consumer could replace the 1/4" thick wood paneling with something else to match them to your home decor.

Dwight, I"m pea-green envious of ya.  Beautiful set.  Can we see money shots of both when ya can get around to it?  I take it this is still the 3-speed washer and multi-tumble speed dryer.  Woodgrain and two-way dryer door.  What more could ya need?!!!

Three agitation speeds on the washer, yes.  The dryer does not have multiple tumble speeds.  The center knob control sets Super or Gentle airflow and heat input, but does not affect tumbling.

I had a white '67 Pontiac Executive Safari 9 pass wagon I bought off my dad. First year & model that Pontiac put woodgrain on a wagon. Sharp wagon. I have the dealer showroom picture of one like it.
NICE 'era' WP set, though I'm partial to the '67 Ladies we had back then. 1967 was a kick-butt year for almost anything,style-wise!

I can answer that one for you Louis. The only agitator Whirlpool used exclusively until a small redesign in the mid 80's and before the direct drives came out. The Super Surgilator, much like the one shown here ;)

Could we get some inside detail photos when you have the chance? Underside of lid, agitator, dispensers, 2 way door doing its thing, drum, bells, whistles would love to see it all.

Hey Dwight, CONGRATS!   They look like they are in really great condition AND at a GREAT price!

Have you tried the dryer door to see if you can easily open it both directions?   Mine works but is temperamental.

Here are photos of my set.

Congrats again!

Kevin

The dryer door is wild. I had no idea it was 2-way.

In keeping with the station wagon theme, that is like the 2-way or 3-way "magic" tailgates. Or, as I sometimes refer to my wagon's tailgate, it isn't "magic," it is sometimes "possessed."

Dwight, you found a dreamy set!

Post# 517809 , Reply# 30   5/14/2011 at 16:21 (4,728 days old) by captainmoody ()

No problems with the door on the dryer Kevin, it does remind me of the old Ford SW tailgates though!
Oh! BTW, we should see how close the serial numbers are on our units.

They made a swing tailgate door for the dryer! No one ever sent me the memo! Totally 70's!

"WOOD" be neat if it were offered in some "metallic" colors, though... ("WOODEN", it????)

WOW! Those are just beautiful Dwight! Congratulations.

I am just finishing a restoration on a Maytag 806 set in Avocado, and the colour is really growing on me. I used to hate it, but now I find myself becoming an Avocado Aficionado!

I still hate Harvest Gold though....

FYI everyone -

I am fairly sure there is another Mark XII machine in white in Kenny/Goatfarmer's post about the $25 gold Maytag. He shows several other Craigslist ads, including one for a $95 Whirlpool. I'd say that one is either from a year before or the year after these. No Estate Wagon accents on it.
