Love the POD. Was the agitator and tub one piece? or were they separate? Does anyone have a pic of an Apex?

I'm sure that someone will come along to clarify, but from what I understand, Apex "bouncing baskets" didn't have an agitator in the true sense of the word. The tub and the "agitator" was a one piece unit. The tub washed by shaking or bouncing the wash. They are very rare and among the most sought after machines.

There's pictures (they look more like sketches to me) of several different Apex models in the "Wanted/Reward" section of this site. Here's a link: www.automaticwasher.org/WANTED/WA...

Was the bouncing mechanism similar to Frigidaire's up and down mechanism?

I "THINK" from what I can see it moves like a calypso only the whole tub does it at 650rpm. I also think it does go up and down as well.

Apex made automatics from 1948 thru 1956 or 1957 when they went out of business.

The tub bounced and shaked at about 650 bounces per minute. The tub was one solid piece of fiberglass with a hump in the center to help balance the load. There was no agitator what so ever in the machine, all the cleaning was done by the bouncing tub.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass tub? That's interesting, I guess that helped with the weight, and made the tub lighter and easier on the mechanism to bounce.

I love the "fluffing" action at the end. This would be a good feature to bring back; my main gripe is grabbing the clothes that are "stuck" to the spin basket, especially when they're at the bottom of the tub! Also, the Apex seems like the main forerunner of the Calypso, IMHO, except the basket doesn't bounce.

What were the Apex's main flaws that led to their demise? Reliability or poor performance?

yes indeed APEX

What a great POD, I had just asked somewhere in some post, Did anyone have any pics of this apex. I think someone once mentioned something about the spin, starting without the basket returning to its level position. How interesting, I wish someone would be lucky enough to find one. alr2903

RE: post 47562

I am also curious as to why they stopped making them, performance issues ?? just didn't sell enough ??

The reason Apex stopped selling appliances had nothing to do with their performance, it all had to do with finances, the company went out of business, for what ever reasons we probably will never know.
