The 22s were not as bad as the KDSS-20 and the KDSS-21 these were much more troublesome and more expensive and harder to fix. Appliance electronics were not that well perfected in the late 1970s through much of the 1980s. When MT came out with thier stack laundry machine in 1985 we replaced boards on almost everyone, but at least MT stuck with the same design and worked the bugs out but they still discontinued it in the early 1990s and went to mechanical controls.
Back to the 22s most of our customers got 10-20 years of trouble free service from these before the board failed. Yes this was not nearly as good as the mechanical controlled DWs where the majority of machines never have a control problem before the machine wears out in other major ways. When the control does fail it was very easy to replace on the 22s. But unfortunately the board manufacturer stopped making reasonably priced replacements so you are kinda up a creek if you have one that fails. There are several companies that will attempt to repair these boards if you are inclined to preserve this otherwise neat machine. |

Hey John,
Do you know what portion of the boards fail? Power supply, power filters, resistors/caps, etc? If it is a common component I'm wondering if the boards can be resurrected. Reminds me of the Neptune boards and the 1990-1992 Oldsmobile Tornado instrument clusters - a simple resistor blows and trashes an otherwise good control board. The trouble I suppose is to find out why the resistor blows. At least we know the source in the Neppies. I've always wanted a KDSS-22 - very surprised I haven't seen one show up over the last several years locally. It seems almost every dishwasher installed in the Cedar Valley during the 70's and 80's was a KitchenAid. Ben |
