COOL!! The motor must have some kind of wheel or tire below the motor to drive the pump? Looks like it moves on that rubber flange connecting the pump to the tub? Does it run? More pictures!! Video!!

Its hard to read Rick, it actually says December, 1950.

The motor must have some kind of wheel or tire below the motor to drive the pump?
Yes a rubber drive wheel pressed onto the bottom of the motor shaft.

Looks like it moves on that rubber flange connecting the pump to the tub?
Sure Does

Does it run?
It does now :) Did the first couple of loads in it tonight!

I'm guessing it is a diaphram water level control and pump from a Norge, but not sure which year.

A Singer water level control in 1950! And the cross bracing is weird and that silver motor is weird too.

I don't think I have ever seen this machine before. That solenoid looks postively antique!

Whats that black box beside the water level switch
It protects electrical contacts to a component that sticks into the tub and is energized at certain times during the cycle.

Is this an early direct drive machine?
I would say that is true statement.

The gasket on that water Pump looks like a donut!
Not as tasty though.

Did you buy a 1,000 ft roll of Howard Johnson Orange wire??
That wire is original to the machine, I've never used orange wire before, except for new orange power cords. Did you put something extra in your fruit smoothie this morning dear?

I'll guess Norge.

On the direct-drive Easy, the motor is mounted horizontally (Velva-Drive), so that isn't it...

If it is a washer, my guess is Launderall that didn't have a window in the lid...

But I have a feeling it is a dishwasher...

And a Blue star goes to Bethann for being the first to suggest it was a Dishwasher!

John, do you agree with Consumer Reports rating the cleaning ability of this Dishwasher as excellent? It seems to clean the best of any impeller dishwasher I have seen. But time will tell. I love the stainless steel racks, no vinyl coating to peel off and then rust.

More pictures and video's (yes video's) to come once I get some plexiglas cut.

Westinghouse Dishwasher

jakins's profile picture
Looks as if Glenn-DADoES was posting as I was typing. It is a great vintage dishwasher. Mine is also a 1950. It has no problem with todays standard 11 in plates. i have over the years owned many vintage dishwashers, this one as far as cleaning is second only to my 1958 Mobile Maid Bow Tie impeller machine. However It is by far the quietest vintage dishwasher that I have ever come across.
The only problem I have ever had with the westinghouse is the pump the design of the tub is such that if you stop to put a forgotten piece into the machine you must make sure the the water on the upper lid stops dripping, if not it will run down the outside of the tub and the motor get on the fly wheel and the pump slips and will not drain. The pump must also be completely water tight as the slightest bit of water will be spun onto the rubber wheel on the bottom of the motor and again the pump will slip and fail to drain the machine.
havent posted to the sight in a long time but I log on at least twice a day to see what is going on.

See Ya
John

Hi John, well its nice to see you posting again. Actually I was quite shocked at how quiet this dishwasher was too! The wash/rinse cycle is extremely short, if they had made it longer I bet it would be an excellent dishwasher. I don't see why exactly it seems to clean better than other impeller machines I have owned, but some Plexiglass might help with that mystery.

More pictures later on tonight.

This Westinghouse is the dishwasher a friend had in her kitchen for years. I have a newer WH roll-out model with vinyl coated racks which is someplace in the warehouse and it held plates at a very tipped back position also which is possibly why the 11 inch diameter plates pose no problem. Somehow, I think that this last WH machine with the laid back racking for plates was the roll-out with the heavy die cast control panel, the little red sliding switch for the hot water booster and a cycle that was still one wash, two rinses and dry. The machine had a round screen detergent cup held by a loop of the upper rack. If the hot water booster was selected, the timer would advance into the wash and pause as it heated water while washing. With just the 700 or 750 watt element, no pre-rinse to warm the dishes and an uninsulated tank, it could wash along for 45 minutes or more, while heating the water, almost like a primitive pot scrubber. John mentioned that his machine cleaned almost as well as his bowtie impeller GE and my curiosity was piqued when I saw the impeller in his brand new dishwasher just out of the box, so I went to the February, 1950 announcement of this dishwasher and saw that it had an aluminum impeller and diverter blade to create the wash action. Metal impellers can be honed to a sharper edge than Bakelite and I would be willing to bet that the aluminum impeller is the reason that this is such a great performer. With the GE dishwashers, it is true that the cycling, racking and even the shape of the impeller changed when the models with the bowtie impeller were introduced, but that metal impeller made a big difference in the washing ability of those machines.

The information in the February, 1950 issue of Electrical Merchandising describes the cycle:

"Washes and rinses in 4 cycles, each using 7 qts. hot water; 1st cycle is a purge rinse to clear off waste; 2nd cycle is a 5 min. washing action followed by 2 separate rinses; last cycle is a 22 min. automatic drying cycle.

Prices: 48-in, electric sink model $374.95; 24-in. cabinet $284.95; undercounter model, $254.95; (Waste-Away garbage disposer available as accessory for sink model at $124.95 additional). In the product highlights there is this blurb:
"Westinghouse returns to dishwasher field with a large capacity, front opening and top-loading dishwasher."
At the time of the 1939 World's Fair, Westinghouse was showing their front-loading dishwashers that still looked like the Conover dishwashers from the company WH bought to have a dishwasher. So this was their big new design. The control was very much like the old GE machines. You turned the knob one way to unlock the drawer so that it could roll out and you turned it the other direction to start the cycle.

I also believe that the extremely tipped-back position in which plates were held in the lower rack helped asure great cleaning because in most impeller-style dishwashers, a great deal of the cleaning of the plates is actually accomplished by the constant downward cascade of water returning to the sump after having been thrown to the top of the tank. The sharper the impeller edge, the more water it throws so, going up or falling down, the water movement this dishwasher provided resulted in great washing action.

May I ask how the water seat at the top works? I'd love to request a pic IAAP (If at all possible).

Said: I love the stainless steel racks, no vinyl coating to peel off and then rust.
Respose: Isn't vinyl or better yet a nylon coating easier on the dishes and glasses? In Toggle's fantasy-land coating over SS is the ideal!

...but I guess a pic of what is at the top of the machine (staitonary part) is not easy.

Beautiful! I'm surprised at how well it cleans and that it is quiet as well!

Robert, Love the way you anchored the turquoise plastic cup, a skill learned out of necessity with impeller machines which seemed to toss things better than wash arm machines. As for the very short wash cycle, it might not be that difficult to wire in a little timer that you could activate once the wash was underway when you wanted a longer wash. It would keep the timer from advancing for an extra 5 or 10 minutes. Whirlpool used that little pneumatic off balance switch on the 33" combo which broke the power to the chain-winder motor thus letting the pulleys drop back into the tumble position. Of course, it would have been nice if it had broken the current to the timer motor as well, but there's wishing and there's reality. Since the machine has its own COROX heater, water cooling down should not be a problem, like it would with older KAs, unless the heater does not run during wash. And the water in the pipes for the rinses might cool a bit during an extended wash, making a little running of the tap necessary before the rinse fill. It's gratuitous tinkering at best since the dishwsher performs so well as it is.

Last night I could hardly hear it when talking to Robert. Now if we can figure a way to make a double plexiglass top for it to see the Forbidden Cycle!

Love the pilot light, SS Racking and Front styling its a keeper!
Now I gotta go look up Conover in the patents!! OY!

Nice job Robert.

The dishwasher had a few problems that needed to be fixed. It only would fill for the first rinse, so I opened up the timer and I sanded down and spray cleaned the fill contact, works perfectly now. The pump was leaking which is now fixed and I installed a stronger return spring on the pump so it presses the pump pulley against the rubber motor rotor with greater pressure. If found, just like John did, that if the pump got wet it wouldn't pump very well, but the stronger spring seems to help quite a bit.

Terry the Westinghouse is installed downstairs in my workshop. I installed a row of cabinets with a Formica worktop and two 24" slots with plans of someday installing two dishwashers in there. The Westinghouse is the first to actually be installed in that area.

Steve I thought the same thing about stainless steel racks that you have to load more carefully as not to chip anything glass. But that's a small price to pay to have absolutely perfect, defect free, 55 year old dishwasher racks. When you close the draw the floating metal lid in the ceiling of the dishwasher comes down locks against the big rubber gasket around the top of the dishwasher tank.

The cycle is:
1.5 min drain
1.5 spray rinse
1.5 min drain
45 sec fill
5 min wash
2.25 min drain
45 sec fill
45 second rinse
2.25 min drain
45 sec fill
45 second rinse
22 minute dry

Tom if I would tinker with the cycle of this dishwasher what I would do is get one of those adjustable bi-metal electrical relays. The relay works by opening and closing a switch at a manually adjustable time interval such as 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off. I would wire the relay in series with the timer motor, which would turn the timer motor on and off ever 30 or 45 seconds (or what ever time period I choose). This would double or triple the entire cycle time. I would probably open the timer up and shave down the dry cam so the heater is only on for twenty minutes and the rest would be a cool fan dry. The heater is only run during the dry cycle, but I would rewire it to run with whenever the motor is running, which would make this a great performing dishwasher for 1950.

But I’m probably not going to tinker with this dishwasher and leave it as Westinghouse intended it to be. BUT tonight I’m picking up one of my ultimate #1 dream dishwasher which probably will get tinkered with because it’s too cool to be such a bad performer.

More to come on that later on in the weekend.

Yes this new Fabulous dishwasher that I'm very excited about, is coming down the pike, that's what got a fire lit under my tail to get the '50 Westinghouse all restored and installed before this new arrival tonight. It's coming from a fellow Applianceville collector who decided they didn't want to keep it in their collection and was so very kind to offer it to me and asked that I provide lots of pictures and a video, which is the least I can do. It arrived today and I can't wait to see it. It's going to need some mechanical work, but it will be a fun new challenge, I've only seen one of these before in my entire life and I have never seen one run.

Pictures of my #1 dream dishwasher and our mystery gift giver will be revealed later on tonight. Along with a BIG thank you.

Can't wait to see your other mystery dishwasher!
Thanks for the pictures.

Anniversarial Bliss

Just one of the many things I so enjoy about this group.
This is a Fab way to be involved in your 10th aniversary.
By the power not vested in me , I decree the entire month of
October 2005 to be an extra-festive celebration of Unimatic. If I were clever enough I would post colorized versions of the first time I encountered you; when you were profiled in TOAC. That was so cool Robert. You have generated incredible energy in this exciting hobby, and shared it so generously. This is the first instance of me ever feeling so connected to a cyber community that is so appealingly diverse. With in the last 30 days, I have encountered and am in the process, ( 1 item sits in the carport, being patient!)of securing a total of 5 items completely appropriate for inclusion in this venue. I love it! Lights and Dials and Buttons!!!! I am looking forward to your newest fabulous presentation!!!

We actually had one in our old apartment, but had to leave it behind when we moved. A shame, really.

Hi Darrel, oooh that sounds very exciting, when are we going to get to see what what's sitting in your carport?

Signed, waiting patiently in Minnie.

tomTurbo, taht "newer WH rollout" you referred to sounds just like the model that aws acrtoss the street from us when we moved into our house. I loved sitting on the floor in front of the machine just listening to it during that long wash phase. Sometimes I'd even put my ear nextt to it and listen to the rubling. This one also appeared to use the temp boost a bit during the final rinse also. The housewife considered it to be a very poor performer, said nothing cleaned. I suspect it had more to do with the stale detergent put in the "dispenser" after a clean load was emptied until the dirty load was run rather than all the dishes being melmac.

Robert, sitting on pins & needles waiting for this new dream dishwasher. I think I equally love dishwashers and washers. I get so excited looking at everyone's dw finds.

Ah yes, a Westinghouse dishwasher! Would you believe I knew that all along? Would you believe I was just kidding with my answer? How about I guessed it after reading all the posts? We had a 1960's Westy roll-out when I was a teen. It did a surprsingly good job for an impeller machine, especially on glassware, and had a heat boosting mode in the wash and last rinse. I wish I had it now.
