Let me state upfront that I'm a big fan of the over-the-top design/styling on vintage machines; The great wall of China that is the Norge Dispensomat console? Love it! The 50-or-so variations in Frigidaire consoles? Love 'em all! The look-ma-no-hands suspended console on the '61 Hotpoint? Love it! But adding the totally unnecessary control panel on top of a nearly empty console was not a great moment in appliance design. I'm all for gratuitousness if it looks sexy, but this.....yeesh. Saved only by the window in the door.

When I was 7 or 8, we were in Florida and we went in a store one morning to buy some fishing equipment. The store was like in the middle of nowhere, just off the highway, surrounded by trees with this empty brilliant black parking lot. On the same floor, were some of the weirdest appliances I have ever seen. I only had a minute or two to glance at all of these straight front, front loading washers and did not even see a name I was so disoriented among these freaky appliances. It was after seeing this picture that I realized that we had gone to a Montgomery Ward store. We did not have those in Georgia. Some of their machines were described as having so many cycles that I figured out the only way that they came up with them was to count each cycle with the panel light on and then again with the light off or maybe with each of the water levels.

Tomturbomatic---I know what you mean about the excessive cycle count. My 3-cycle Frigidaire FL claims to have something like 14! The actual cycles are Whites, Colors and Knit/Delicate. Even if you take into account the wash time options on two of the cycles as separate entities (Heavy, Medium, Light) it still comes nowhere NEAR 14 cycles.

The extra control panel looks like something that they added on at the last minute, or something! Or maybe it's a cable box! (ha)
