If a Unimatic is acting like it isnt plugged in (meaning absolutely no activity), where would one start to look for a problem? Any tips on how to use my voltmeter on this thing while its plugged in w/out zapping myself? Also does anyone know where common shorts may be.

Hey Jeb...

Going through the same thing.

Seems like the Circuit Breaker is blown, but it's not.

Nothing happens. Mine started to fill then went dead. I'll let you know what I find.

If you give the model number will see if it's listed.

IIRC, the book stops at models made <1950, but haven't read the thing cover to cover.

Glad I opened this post. I thought it was a slur against Robert.

Any broken wire in the circuit, since it is such a simple wiring path, will make the machine seem dead. When we found my 58 washer, it was a matter of a wire having come off a terminal on the motor. If all of the wires are connected properly, you are going to have to check each wire for continuity which is done with a battery-operated multi-tester so there is no danger of shock. The first wires I would test are the ones most subject to vibration like from the timer to the motor.

PUSH TO RESET CIRCUIT BREAKER

Unplug washer and bypass the breaker and retest, yes these did tend to go dead.

It could be a short in the timer. I remember Greg having the same issue with one of his unimatics in Omaha when I attended his wash-in.

I'm so sorry you guys are having troubles, as you know I just got out of a mess myself.  Wish I had some advice for you, but best of luck :)

Bypassed the console circuit breaker, still dead. Preliminary inspection of wiring yields nothing. Going to try Tom's advice now

You don't even hear

the water valve solenoids buzzing? If not then its between the cord and the timer block.
