Circa 1955, neighbor had a TL which did not spin. Rather, the tub was lined with neoprene sheet. For extraction the AIR was sucked out of the basket, the neoprene collapsed inward, pressing the water out. Unknown how effective it was, how long it tended to last, or even the brand. I want to say Norge but something tells me it's more obscure than that.

If anyone is going to remember that machine, they have to be here. Where else? Any idea what I was looking at 56 years ago?

That would be the Bendix Economat. Here's a link to a recent thread about one. Our Webmaster Robert made a clear lid for his.

SEVEN MINUTES to identification? My hair would be parted if I had any.

Thanks, I took Robert's tour. Knew I didn't imagine this washer but never thought anyone would remember it much less show me one.

And chances are, if there's something you think no one else has ever heard of, someone here will know exactly what you're talking about. I've learned quite a bit since joining the group.

Yes, data arrives faster than I can mentally index it. Space and resources I'd love to join the collector/restorers but in my space if something came in something would have to go out. Love browsing the memories though.

Mom's machine

bought in 1953 because she never liked a wringer machine. Hers was a Crosley but looked identical to the one in the video and operated the same way. Her model was "semi-automatic" because we had no hookups for an automatic. You had to wheel it over to the sink and fill it with a hose for wash cycle and again for rinse. She had it for about 13 years. The timer "went" from time to time, and I remember the replacement part box always said Bendix on it. That collapsing tub mashed the clothes onto the agitator and you took them off kind of in "chunks". Talk about a mess of wrinkles! This was long before permanent press.

I did get to see it right after it finished once and yeah it really packed clothes down.

Thought I would have remembered Bendix, but at the time I only knew them for frontloaders. Believe it was full auto. In the garage, hooked to the wall.
