Well here it is. And I want to give a big thanks to Chris (christfr) of St. Louis who offered to me, it was so very kind of you Chris, I can't thank you enough. I've always wanted a Youngstown Jet-Tower Dishwasher ever since I saw my first Youngstown Ad. For me I've now reached my pinnacle of automatic dishwashing!

Here are the first seven pictures for the evening.

Electrical Free Water Valve

unimatic1140's profile picture
Look at this VERY COOL mechanical water valve. The copper cam disk on this primitive timer turns and mechanically raises the plunger on the water valve to add water to the tank! Very cool, I can't wait to see this in action.

And Finally I thought some of you might enjoy the owners manual that came with the machine. So I added it to the owners manual library, click the link below, it's the last one on the list.

I will begin to work on trouble shooting the Youngstown later on this weekend. Hopefully we'll have some spray action videos soon.

WOW!! Robert, congratulations...as the proud owner of a YOUNGSTOWN JET-TOWER are you still in disbelief? I know I would have to keep checking the basement to make sure I wasn't dreaming (actually I check the shed frequently for a similar reason...)! Chris, what an awesome gift to give, not to mention beautiful. From looking at the pictures, it's in MINT shape...great job detailing!

I've never seen a mechanically-operated water valve...how interesting! No more worrying about cleaning valve plungers, pins, and bladders either! And an on-board heater to get those dishes sparkling clean!

What a great looking dishwasher. Have never seen one like that before. How do you open the lid? I didn't see a handle or what looked to be anywhere to put your fingers in to lift it.

OY, Gottenyu!! Of all the early dishwashers, this had to be the worst, the absolute, hands down winner of the shtik dreck "award." I'm happy you got your dream (nightmare)machine, but I have used and loaded these and the Apex, and this is no Apex. Have fun, enjoy. It is fun to watch the water begin squirting out of the lower holes and then higher up as it fills and builds up water pressure. Maybe you will come up with a way to angle the spray out of the top holes so that they do not completely block the view down through the glass as they spray water where it is not needed. What a waste of resources. You will want to insulate that water heater tank and you will want to use it because the hottest water possible is absolutely necessary to get cleaning and drying out of that 9 minute cycle. Actually, if the early KitchenAids had such a water heater, they would have washed far better and they actually had a capacity that was more than a sad joke. Enjoy it in good health. If it makes you happy, I'm happy for you and that is not something said over positive situations.

Love it all! Congrats.
Chris is a good man. Would someone decent snatch him up already? (Pardon the expression.)

Can't miss with a swing-open front panel complete with handle.

Does it pay to stick a "regular" dishwasher timer in the hatch and convert to a solenoid-type standard water valve, should all else fail?

How does this contraption drain? Gravity, pump?
Does the pump switch on and off or is there a soleonoid or a mechanical valve?

Sorry about the lack of patience. LOL

Robert, you lucky dawg, you! Yup, that's the one I remember from my childhood. You'll have to let us know how well it washes. I also loved the video, which would be considered quite sexist by todays standards. The guy doing the voice-over sounds like he has quite a Minnesota accent, uff-da! Definitely not from Youngstown Ohio, or he'd sound like all my relatives from there.

Robert,
What a beautiful machine!
I always thought that these machines were built like tanks. I was able to confirm my memory when I saw Jimmy's at his house in Ohio.
Your's looks like it was hardly used. The way the racks and porcelain gleams. So glad that you got your dream dishwasher.
Chris, you are a such a nice guy, being so kind and all. Where did you get this dishwasher? Did you find in in a house?
Can't wait to hear what you think is wrong witih it after you play with it for awhile.
Thanks for the pictures!

its in beautiful shape and I love just love the "me" shot off the dial! PERRRFECT!

I remember seeing alot of activity in the Cusano's machine but I was too young to notice how well it cleaned the dishes.
Theirs was not in half as nice condition as yours is. That top always got scratched by sliding china across it.

BEAUTIFUL!
Tell us what needs fixing and does the tank heat with 110V or 220V??

Congratulations!

If nothing else, the entertainment value of vintage dishwashers cannot be gainsaid!

This is the first Youngstown top-loader I have ever seen. That porthole makes me smile.

Robert, some of us are still on dialup, so if you could, I'd be very grateful for a plexiglas shot or two, in addition to any video.

Thanks everyone! Pete if you look at the 5th picture above you can see how you push in the chrome knob and turn it to pop open the lid.

Tom, oh I’m totally expecting this dw to be terrible performance wise. But its soooooo cute and the window lid is soooo cool that it really needs to be loved. Seems like vintage dishwashers are like men, then cuter they are the more work and trouble they are. :)

Yes the machine is beautiful and clean. Chris did a beautiful job with cleaning and painting the machine and that's my least favorite part of the restoration process. Now it’s my turn to do the necessary mechanical restoration work that its going to need, and its going to need quite a bit of it.

Mike the jet-tower rotates as it sprays hot water.

Toggle, this Youngstown drains via a solenoid drain valve and simply uses gravity to drain the dishwasher of waste water.

Jon that tank takes only 120volts. But it runs 24/7 so its already ready to wash dishes. I will install a switch so I can turn the heater tank off when I’m not using it.

No problem Lawrence I can shoot still pictures through the window, even without Plexiglas, YAY.

Now its going to take quite a bit of work until its ready for washing its first load of dishes. I haven’t applied electricity to it yet but I manually filled the dishwasher with hot water last night and fount three things that needs to be fixed in its water system first.

#1 Cast Iron Drain Valve:: I found that the drain valve is not sealing properly (power off drain is closed, power on drain is open) and it leaks about a half gallon a minute which would quickly drain the wash water out.

#2 Mechanical Water Valve: When you press the valve down it fills fast but when you release it to stop it from flowing that fast fill goes down to a fast trickle. Obviously this will have to be fixed.

#Cast Iron Recirculation Pump
#3 There is a slow leak at the shaft seal of the pump. This is going to be a challenge to fix, but I'll figure out something.

I will photograph and explain what I’m doing as I’m fixing all three of these parts. Tonight I will begin with the very Primitive Drain Valve Assembly. It’s quite cool and seals with nothing more than a rubber super ball! More to come.

Tom Turbo, you're absolutely right. This was worse than the Frigidaires. When there were 8 of us under one roof, I cannot imagine how my "grandmother" got all our dishes from a meal in this thing. And yeah, i remember those spray jets that shot right up to the window glass from the top of the jet tower. Theirs was the combined sinnk & dishwasher model.

Cosmetically, it looks almost mint. I wonder if it ever saw more then occasional use?

Congrats, Robert. Have fun finishing the restoration process.

Congratulations, Robert! What with the design of the machine and the window in the top-loading lid, it looks very much like a washing machine from the same era.

copycats

So it looks like Frigidaire took this design and used it for their "spray tube" dishwashers, just turned the tube horizontal instead of verticle.

Robert,
This is a real surprise. Of course I love it with a window and all even to this day should have windows. Some question as far as the water heating goes what temp does it heat to? And is the heating only for the final rinse? And would you actually need to turn the heater on awhile before you start the unit?
Best Of Luck with a real Gem

Hi Peter, the water heater isn't inside the dishwasher tub, its an external water heater tank that holds about six gallons of water and keeps the water at 175F to 180F, 24 hours of the day ready at any time to wash dishes! If you look at the 6th picture I posted above at the top of this thread you can see the water tank at the back/lower left hand corner of the machine.

As others have said, seeing that machine sure brings back memories for me too. I remember how the water used to kind of spit through the holes on the top as the machine was filling. It would eventually fill the window to the point of being hard to see what was going on inside but to a child with an interest like mine, it was still cool to watch.

I remember that big knob very well. I used to push a chair up to the counter, push and turn the dial and climb up to watch. It used to drive my Mother nuts.

We had the electric sink model.
