I bought my very first washer on Monday, it's a portable Kenmore Belt Drive. I am excited to have it as I have been looking for one for about 3 months now and finally snagged one up! It's a model C110.2250081 and on the model tag it says "Simpsons-Sears" Anyone have an approx. date on this machine? I want to say early 80's 'cause the control panel has a woodgrain design similar to my Mothers old BD fullsize.

Below is the link to the Regular Cycle wash, its washing a pair of jeans, shorts, t-shirt, and a sweater. It washes very well, and the filter is my favourite part.

I hooked it up to the sink in my bathroom to get the full portable experience.

Here is it washing a golf shirt, I had to bleach it by itself.

The link is a video of the permanent press cycle, I also included a cool down rinse.

It has 5 wash/rinse selections, and a variable water level.

This is the 4 cycle model, according to the wiring diagram there was a 2, 3, and 4 cycle model washer. I guess this might fall under the category of "Alphabet washing" ha ha. The rinses and spins are very short, only about 2 minutes each. Plus while its spinning you get the infamous short 7 second rinse.

Many thanks goes out to Malcolm, he suggested I replace the wiring to the wig-wags because it wouldn't agitate, but only spin and drain. So I replaced the wiring, and now the machine works flawlessly.

However, earlier today, as I moved the machine out of my bathroom, I noticed a small puddle of brownish water underneath the machine. It seems to be leaking a bit of water from the top of the pump, right on the pump pulley, so perhaps there is a seal that has gone bad. Also, take a look around the pump, it seems to have thrown some lube/grease on the transmission mounts and drain tube.

That is like THE first automatic washer I ever owned! Mine was a 1985 model which I bought in 1987 for my second apartment. I had a fabric softener dispenser on mine - I guess this one was lost.
It was a fine machine - I eventually converted it to a permanent installation, then traded it for a full-size Viking in Harvest Gold!
Have fun with it!!

Its also thrown some of the lube/grease on the inside of the cabinet. However, the machine washes great, and its real fun to use in its native habitat of a portable setup!

Hope you enjoyed the pictures and videos!

Had the same leaking problem when I got my "vintage* Whirlpool BD portable (see archives for the whole story), and yes it was the tub seal.

Happily you can purchase a seal kit and do the job yourself, or call in a repair person.

Until the source of the leak is found and fixed I shouldn't use the machine much if at all. IIRC there can be a risk of water going where it ought not to be causing damage.

Best of luck!

L.

LEAKING BD COMPACT WASHER

Your leak is the water pump, not the tub seal. The water pump is fairly easy to replace.

Hey John,

I figured it was the water pump, is it the same water pump as the full size machines? I can't find a parts breakdown on this machine. I have 0 literature on WP machines, but I have enough lit on MT machines to sink the Titanic!

I'll still buy a tub seal kit though, before they go extinct, and just in case things like to break in pairs.

Thank you for correcting my mistake. What would we do without you?

@MaytagA710

Don't know about up north, but down here Sears PartsDirect still has parts for the older Whirlpool/Kenmore portable compact washing machines.

Myself have two NIB FSP purchased for my machine as spares, but IIRC one is a three port whilst the other is four. The later is not for my machine as I found out later, and never swapped out the one already installed for the former as my repairman said the one in the machine was fine. The pump kicks out a sudden burst of water as the filling stops and the wash or rinse cycle starts, which I've been told is a sign of a healthy pump.

Sadly I've purchased a new computer and many of my older files and bookmarks haven't bothered to migrate over to the new system, so cannot access my downloaded schematics/parts diagrams for my unit so you can see if they are similar.

Oh drat. My pump does kick out water for a microsecond after its finished filling, but I always thought it was because the pump hasn't quite been shifted into recirc from drain after the spin.

I tried Sears PartsDirect as soon as I got the machine home, no avail. No variation of the model number will help. I am going to try punching in the model number from a washer in the 1976 Sears catalog I have, I hope it works, cross your fingers!

TUB SEAL AND BEARINGS AND SEALS

combo52's profile picture

Kevin these parts are all the same as what is still being used on current DD machines. Getting these parts if ever needed is the least of your worries in keeping this cool machine running. The belt is unique to this machine but the machine is not very hard on belts, about the only other part that is unique that you are somewhat likely to need some day is the timer. I would grab these items if you want to keep this machine for another 10-20 years of light use.

Junking Gold? Found a Kenmore C110

Hi Everyone,

I just got my hands on the same kind of washer in this thread.

When I turned it on, it would make noise but would not spin or agitate. I had hoped that this old washer would just work.

I took it apart and found that the drive belt is completely missing. There isn't even a peice of it left.

Does anyone know the part number for this drive belt or the size of drive belt I would need?

There was also a small ring (rubber) that had rotted out of a space between where the drive belt attaches to the drum and the drive clutch above it. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jai

Changing A Tub Seal In A WP World Washer

combo52's profile picture

You need a lot more than the seal, if the spin shaft that the seal rides on is pitted or rusted [ it is ] you need a complete transmission to start with, and as I can see you are already finding out these machines do not come apart easily.

These were neat little washers but they were never worth repairing when the seal and bearings failed because of the cost of the transmission and the difficulty of disassembling these washers.

Went through similar with an older (than yours) WP portable that since have moved on.

Happily was less of an extensive repair than originally thought.
