I had started a range thread over a year ago and thought I would start another one. I hope that people would add to it. I personally have no prefrence over gas or electric. I just see the ranges made today and not to say weather or not they are all bad but I feel we didnt realize how good we had it with more flexability back in the day.
Lets start with what I think is a gibson!

Regarding ranges, I liked electric ones mostly because they are a lot more precise in transferring heat from the burner to the cookware.Gas ranges have flames that can waste fuel and not be as precise as the electric ones. A lot of owners/users of the electric ranges have no clue as to how to first turn them on to get hot, then set the level of heat you need. Then, once the food is either boiling or simmering, you can "tune in" on the right level of heat and it will stay there as long as you want without burning or scorching.I've never been able to do that with any gas range. The baking in electric ovens is also more precise because they need nothing other than a vent to let the heat escape.Gas ovens need lots of breathing and have openings every where.Again, causing gas to escape and waste fuel. They look great though and when they were in their prime, the models you have shown are absolutely fabulous!!!

Ranges!

peteski50's profile picture
I grew up with gas and most people I know had gas stoves. Mostly they spoke about how they would never have electric. After using electric ranges I liked them. The 1st electric experience of my own was a late 60's hotpoint cooktop and wall oven.
The wall oven was the best I ever used. The cooktop was ok but I replaced it with a Summit 24 inch cooktop that I liked a lot. I liked the fact that the coils unplugged and the top lifted up to clean and it had more power than the hotpoint.
When I moved I had to have gas (a coop rule) The 1st few years I had a 1950' 20 inch wincroft in my coop than when I redone the kitchen 10 years ago I bought a sears with 2 power burners. It cooks as well as the electric coil in my openion but I would take a electric oven over a gas oven any day! Back in the 70's and early 80's my Aunt had a complete GM Frigidaire home but she had a gas hardwick stove. I knew a few people that had complete Frigidaire homes with the exception of various stoves gas! More pictures and stories welcome!
Thanks,
Peter

Monarch wood, gas, electric, wood/gas, wood/electric stoves were built in Bever Dam, WI., not Beaver Bay.  My maternal grandmother, and mom had 30" Monarch gas ranges, and one of my dad's paternal aunt's had a 40" electric range and they were all built very solidly.  Grandma used the heat from the pilot light to raise her homemade bread faster, and it was always as light as a feather.  I miss mom's Monarch, she now has a POS GE gas range.

Monarch!

These were fairly common both in my hometown of Lenoir NC and here in Mocksville, we have a great furniture store here that has been a Hotpoint dealer since 49 and was a Monarch dealer, he collects old stoves, and has some rare birds!, I would slide that red Monarch in my kitchen yesterday!! the owner of the store here said a Monarch was much heavier than a Hotpoint, and was more expensive, I have a 52 O Keefe and Merrit hi vue range I want to sell, its in good unrestored condition.

The first Monarch range I ever saw was our next door neighbor's, ca 1958.  It was decked-out with metallic accents like the cars of the time, and built like a tank.  Sometime in the late 60's we bought a similar one at Goodwill and hauled it up north to the farm to replace Grandma's ailing Hotpoint......an early model with the coiled-wire burner elements in ceramic disks and an oven the size of a breadbox.

That 1958 Whirlpool range was tested by CU. They checked for the safety of the controls of all of the ranges in the report by leaving a rear element on high while unattended and without a pan. The WP control panel melted down to the point where some of the slider controls were unusable.

The Presteline range, if you will note the small print, was made by the presesed steel car company. This was the range which featured the 6 qt Presto deep well pressure cooker. Mirro made the deep well pressure cooker for Frigidaire ranges and Ekco make the deep well pressure cooker for GE ranges.

In the 60s, Monarch electric range ads touted their convection ovens which had a fan in the bottom of the oven. At the time, I had never heard of Monarch ranges. In the 1940s, they had interesting features, like not only a deep well, but a shallow well with heat not only on the bottom, but also around the sloped sides. It was usually shown with an enameled Windsor-shaped saucepan which, I guess, came with the stove. The surface oven was like a roaster oven in the cooktop, again with the heat coming from the bottom and the sides for small baking jobs and other roaster oven meals. When the surface oven was not being used, there was a flat cover for it to give a work area.

The Reigning Monarch

Monarch abounded in the rural areas of farming and ranching in Washington state.  The ranges most popular were combination fuel with a wood burning larger side connected to an apartment size electric range.  The wood burning provide heat in the winter and doubled as a trash burner while the electric portion could be used in the summer months.  The second stove could also be pressed into service during harvest, round up and holidays.  I only saw one new Monarch in the early 70s which a 30 inch looking very much like the Crosley range in reply 34.  Apartment from trailers gas and propane are nearly unheard of in this part of the state so few of us have much experience besides camping.  In SEattle there is piped in natural gas so many more have the opportunity to use gas as a heat source for cooking than in the broader portions of the state.

Corning 3+1 Range

cycla-fabric's profile picture
My mother had a Corning 3+1 range and I remember she loved it. Much better than the GE Americana,I still have all the instructions for it too. What was interesting is that it came with a VHS tape on how to demonstrate the cooktop and oven as it came with corning smoothtop cookware. That was a good range, but got replace when the kitchen got remolded. Couldn't have the harvast gold stove in a new kitchen.

The Corning smooth top thermostatic elements used the same ribon heating elements and thermostat as in the Electromatic skillets and if you have ever used one, you know the heating is very even. There is something called, I think, the coefficient of heating involved in heat transfer. It is very good for similar materials and less so between different materials. The Pyroceram cooking surface of the range and the Pyroceram material of the Cook Mates heat at the same rate so when the thermostat in the center of the surface unit says it is 300F, the pan will be 300F also. For other materials, the heating speeds and distribution will vary. I don't guess I have ever tried heating a piece of Cuisinart cookware on the Corning Electromatic skillet base, but I should try that to see how it behaves.

The Oven was made by Frigidaire, so you know it worked well.

If I knew how to upload pictures......

I would put in a picture of a new new range, my lovely gas Whirlpool.  I am still very pleased by it.

I am finding all the pictures everyone is posting to be very interesting.  Thank you all.

This is not a direct quote, but it is close: In The Fannie Farmer Baking Book by Marion Cunningham, she said that "If the oven is working correctly, there is no great difference in performance between gas and electricity."  She said it, I believe it (borne out by my experience), and to me, that settles it.

As for gas cooktops, I will stipulate to greater heat in the kitchen.  I will also stipulate to electricity being somewhat (but not very,) in my experience faster.  However, I love the instant responsiveness of gas cooking.  I do not bend over to adjust the flame, I slide the pan aside a small bit.  I never got the hang of remembering to shut off the element and finish cooking on retained heat.  I did get the idea of starting on Medium High, and powering down.

The only electric I would ever consider would be a Radiantube Frigidaire with self cleaning oven.  However, the ones around here are either still in use, or long gone.

Lawrence/Maytagbear

KEVIN!

I like them all, but love the Kelvinator and Norge best! as far as gas vs electric, im strange I guess, but I like gas ovens better, and electric surface units, my problem with gas burners is the adjustment on most is so sensitive, and, when turned low any little breeze will blow it out, most newer gas ranges wont turn low enough to simmer anyway, but the gas oven to me, is perfect, totally even heating.

Dad's Aunt Ella had the Monarch model F178W electric range, minus the deep well cooker.  When she died, it was sold to friends of my parents who had rental properties.  I often wonder how long it survived being in a rental unit.

When we bought our house, it had a Frigidaire smooth top range like the one pictured above.  The top was really stained, and both of us were used to gas, so we replaced it with a 1998 Magic Chef gas range.

Caloric!

peteski50's profile picture
The caloric range was a good range at one time but by the 70's the quality went to the dump. In 1977 when my family purchased a hi low range and it was nothing but trouble. Most people I knew that had caloric ranges had a lot of problems. First off the bottom oven was constantly dying in the middle of cooking. Also the self cleaning didnt operate properly and the bottom of the oven warped after a few uses. My parents after fighting with caloric had the stove replaced 4 times in 3 years. Than they went to the better business bearu and caloric was forced to give my family money back. They bought a roper self clean stove and a seperate microwave on top and it still works today. I did like the setup on the caloric but it was nothing but trouble. The attached picture is like the one we had except ours was white and had a black glass front. The upper oven and burners worked ok.

This is my dream stove. The one pictured is a 1953 O'keefe and Merrit Aristocrat. I don't have the room and the money. They are asking $12,000 for this stove.

The Aristocrat

They weigh as much as my car and take up nearly as much space but, oh, could I cook with one of those babies!  Two ovens, two broilers, a warming oven, 6 burners.....heck, a person could run a restaurant with one.  The Aristocrat's only rival would be the Magic Chef 6300, another "died and gone to heaven" dream cooker.

here is my mid 60's General Electric 40" range with P*7 oven I'm unsure of age but I'd assume between 66-68.

This is the stove my gram had for about 35 years before it died from a power surge, it was replaced by a 67 Frigidaire Custom Imperial. I paid only $30 for this GE

Here's the Rolls Royce of cooking... imo the best ever made, imo. These are going in our cottage on Lake Champlain: both are circa 1956, the oven is NOS, never used, still has the wrapping paper on the broiler pan.

Hans, those ranges are wonderful!  The Kenmore and the '55 Norge look like they were designed by a car manufacturer of the era.   The Caloric has that "look of the future" that was everywhere in the 60's.....even the facades of buildings.   Seeing the picture of your GE made my heart leap in my chest.   It is remarkably similar to the 30" model ca 1958 we had in the house where I grew up.  The layout of the backsplash, the light with the pin-dots and the "tray" around the burner pushbuttons is identical.   Thanks a million for sharing!

A good range, but it has a few drawbacks, no oven light, 3 small units, but the thing I hate is the divided top, I like clustered units better.

GET OUT THE WINDEX!!

Even worse are the copper ones, beautiful when new, but covered in a clear enamel, that, when it scratches..moisture gets in and soon the copper tarnishes in patches, I have a Sunbeam mixer this has happened to.

How over the top can a person go?  I think it cheapens the look of that fine old range.  And cleaning it?!  The maid must have been thrilled.

--The CALORIC gas ranges seem to be the worst! And the late-'60's to '70's when I thought they looked their BEST!

And although the '50's to mid-'60's were the most reliable as they were elegant, they lacked the benefit of self-cleaning!

The Westinghouse upper/lower-double, there, is a nice range and a shame those ranges had always long-been second-fiddle to the ever-more popular GE (and unfortunately the clock-timer was notoriously just "one" of the things that went wrong with 'em!)...

Nice stoves & I love seein' 'em, so,--PLEASE!--put up more!

Oh my gosh!  I haven't seen one of those since the 60's.  I remember two of them from my childhood.  One was either a free-standing or slide-in unit, the other was a surface unit with a separate wall oven.  I agree; with only one larger element and the burners being closer together plus the step, it wasn't good for large pots like a canner.  But, I thought it was a pretty cool arrangement!  I think I remember my mother commenting on it once, saying that for someone like her who is "vertically challenged" the lower level in the front made it much easier to see inside a pot or to stir things.

I'd forgotten about these!

I used one in college in a house I took care of for a summer. My friends thought the layout was interesting. But only one big burner. Why did they do that for so many years? This range even made it into the self-cleaning years. An old flame had one in his kitchen in avocado with a self cleaming oven.
It's kind of a play on the "terrace-top" commercial saute burner stations in commercial kitchens.

LOTS OF GREAT RANGES

combo52's profile picture

Some notes,

All the pictured Corning smooth-top ranges were made by Corning, only on the first couple of years were the ovens made by GM Frigidare, but buy about 1970 they made thier own complete range and it was OK but not a Frigidare. These Corning ranges were later sold under the Amana name also.

Doug that WH hi-low range on Ebay is very neat [ did everyone notice it has the WH stirrer on the right front burner? ]  I weren't 3000 miles away I would be going after that one, I hope someone from the club gets it.

I have never seen a range with a hot water dispenser. I'm wondering if there is a water reserve somewhere or if it needs a water line connection like a refrigerator?

EDIT:

I got the answer on Google... But I'm still wondering where's the storage tank and if it requires a pump to get water there!

The hot water dispenser would have been  connected to the house's plumbing just like a refrigerator's automatic icemaker.  My hunch is the 2 quart reservoir (about the size of a 1/2 gallon milk jug) was located at the back of the range behind the bottom storage drawer, or possibly somewhere behind the backsplash panel.

Hotpoint Custom Trend

paulg's profile picture
Do you remember a Hotpoint Custom Trend that was on sale about a year ago?
I have it now. Currently it sits in the basement on a commercial cart awaiting restoration.
The range folds up into the side. Unit was in use almost to the day I bought it.
And it's in PANK!

Love the Hotpoint stuff

paulg's profile picture
Those late 50's early 60's Hotpoints look similar in some ways to parts of the Custom Trend I have. Same parts for sure.
The Custom Trend does have a rotisserie motor, but I don't have that attachment. Someday maybe.
I erroneously said it needed restoration. That's actually too strong. It does work but it really needs some wiring updated and a good cleaning. Overall it is in really good condition.
I remember those pull-out Teflon walls. We had samples of those that we used as cookie-sheets for years. A pink Hotpoint fridge would be nice to accompany the range. However maybe I'll just paint my Crosley pink. Hmmmm.

I WANT>>>

Those steel cabinets in reply 163!!! I think they are St Charles or Geneva, as for the Hotpoint stuff, Mocksville is F U L L !!of it, our local furniture store, Daniels, has been a Hotpoint dealer since 49, they are the best folks to buy from ive ever seen, its like stepping back in time!!, they do not have computers, everything is done on paper!! I love it! I also love that Hotpoint oven surface unit thing..Custom Trend, ive never seen that before! Our local dealer had a fire in the 80s and all his old literature got burned up unfortunately, he does collect ranges, and even has a Hughes Hotpoint from the teens, he only collects what they sold, Hotpoint GE and Monarch.

I now present Frigidaire ranges for 1940!

the first year for the Radiantube burners--not the ones we're used to. Instead they are like calrod or corox burners. Second year for double oven ranges. Enjoy!

and the last page!

It's interesting that I have two brochures for 1939. January and July. In July of 1939, Frigidaire introduced their first 2 oven range. I love the styling of the deluxe ranges! Have a good weekend. We're off to Spokane in the a.m.! Greg
