Hi everyone.

Have been meaning to do a thread like this for Hoover, for ages. Finally got round to it!

In a similar vein to the Creda thread that I did a while back, I will try and post pics of all Hoover automatic washers and dryers, from the first Keymatic through to the last Electron models.

I only intend on posting official pictures of the various models and will try steering clear of posting pictures of individual collectors machines. This is to enable them to post pictures, should they wish.

Here is the washer side of what will be covered.

Those models in black are unrepresented in preservation, whilst those in green have at least one example in safe hands.

The two models in red brackets [A3C16] and [A3170] are the only two models that I dont have images of so, if anyone stumbles across any - pretty please - let me have a copy:-)

The years at the top ONLY apply to the production run of the core ranges and NOT to the exclusives!
e.g some of the Matchbox exclusives were in production through to the end of 1979, whilst the final Electron models (A3770 and A3772) were produced around 1991.

and the Dryer side of things - a lot fewer models, with the same colour coding as applies to the washers shown above.

re the [D6??? hof] in the matchbox exclusives.
I have never seen any documentation to show that, whilst there was an exclusive House of Fraser washing machine (model A3052), there was a matching dryer!
I cannot get my head around such an establishment only providing a washer and not a dryer - hence there is this D6???. There may have been a HofF exclusive dryer but, if there was, no trace of it have I ever found...

The term 'Matchbox' was the advertising slogan used to sell the first series of slimline machines.

Will explain more when get to 1970!

1970!!!!! well the adverts actually from 1972...

Hoover had another major bodystyle change, dispensing with the widebody series of machines and introducing the new slimline 'Matchbox' machines.

To emphasise the compact proportions, the marketing men had the machines poking out of matchboxes in almost all their adverst of the period.

Never quite fathomed whether the matchboxes were for match-sticks or matchbox model cars?

3235 Automatic - 1st version.
Rather than standardise bodyshell production, the first series basic machine boasted a Half panel arrangement.
This meant that two different bodyshells had to be produced, with one catering for the basic machine and the other, with a cut out for the powder drawer, catering for the deluxe automatic and keymatic...

Post# 535001 , Reply# 18   8/4/2011 at 13:09 (4,642 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

This slightly daft situation lasted until 1972, when the 3235 Automatic received a full panel.
from then on bodyshell production could be concentrated on a totally standard production line, making shells with cut outs for powder drawers whether they were to be used or not.

the 2nd version 3235 Automatic below...

Paul,

I think the A1004 H-axis top loader is basically a Philips slim star because the lid release is exactly the same. I wonder if it spins at 1000rpm. It really is hard to believe that 38 years ago me & that machine were brought into this world.

Paul,

Thanks for doing this thread, lovely bits of Merthyr eye candy!

Have never seen some of these pictures before, I have to say that the 3221H is a particularly striking beast, hope one turns up eventually, along with an A3040 to match you guys' dryer!

Always think the 3022 was a bit odd in that it matched the most basic automatic, yet it was a De Luxe with no standard equivalent - does make me wonder if more than one matchbox dryer was planned.

The folks next door to us had a 3235 Automatic.

She used to have a strange plumbing set-up and would attach the hose to the hot tap, start the machine off and then change to the cold one once the program was running.  The tap adapter was always covered by a tea cloth because it used to squirt water around the edges.

The drain hose when though a hole in he wall, on the out side was a length of guttering taking the wastewater to the drain about 7 ft away.

Strange how seeing the photos bring the memories back.  I can even remember what happened to this machine, the suspension went on it and the drum was lopsided, then the other side went and the folks got them selves a service super twin.

Fantastic Thread thanks Paul.

Lee

Glad that the thread is proving interesting

Always thought it would be useful to have one thread, detailing all the machines (well, as many as can be).

Thanks for all the comments and here are the answers to the queries so far:

Craig....dont know exactly wo made the A1004 for Hoover and Hoover dont mention in their servicing info either.
Going by the successor model - the A1094, it could possibly be a Brandt. Will try and do a bit more digging - maybe a Which Magazine will help.
Pretty much certain it will be French though.

Al...re the chrome door dryers. As far as I know only the D6018 was so equipped, with all the others either having the non-porthole door, or the standard white porthole.
Quite why Currys requested it, when no one else did, is a bit of a mystery. Certainly adds a touch of class to the machines though, especially when combined with the glossy Winchester Blue facia.
I suppose the only standard dryer they could have offered was a single heat affair, what with reversing being no where to be seen in the mass machine market.
Probably the costs involved were deemed not worth it

Sudsreturn....when this thread is done with, I will examine just what pics I have got of the tubs and spinners. If its a comprehensive enough collection to make such a thread worthwhile, then I will give it a go.

Simon... I have come to the conclusion that the mystery widebody, that my aunt and uncle in Sheffield had, was definitely a 3221H. My brain muct have been playing tricks with me and making me think it that it had a powder drawer, when it didnt.
Have put that mystery machine to bed now.
Would love an A3040 to match my dryer - saw only one, when I was 3 or 4 years old. The white powder drawer hand grab against the blue, made it look very stark - still a very smart machine.

Lee...never saw a 3235, that I can remember, though my Aunt and uncle had a derivitive of it in the form of the A2018 Automatic E. That machine was killed by a rogue 50p piece in 1986:-(

Paul

Its just after Christmas 1975...

...and the next series of machines was introduced - what I call the Aluminium Series.

The lineup comprised of a like for like replacement of the Matchboxes:

A2020 Automatic (cold fill only) - replacing the 3235
A3006 Automatic De Luxe - replacing the 3236H
A3008 Keymatic De Luxe - replacing the 3243H
&
D6008 Dryer De Luxe - replacing the 3022A

The A1004 Spacemaker remained in production, to act as the toploader.

Rare pictures of a very rare machine...

As far as I know, pictures of the next model have never been posted before on Discus O Mat and, whenever I have enquired about it, people have come back blank.

It receives hardly a mention in the Which Magazines of the era and even Hoover seemed embarrassed by it, with the machine receiving hardly a mention in their servicing literature.

Sorry about the poor quality, but they are the only pictures I have ever seen of it and they come courtesy of a poor pdf copy of the instruction manual.

1976 - rare machine number 2

76 saw 2 models quickly replaced, as the marketing men decided that Hoover needed to be made 'Electronic'!
As Which Magazine says though, neither model was anymore elctronic that the machines they replaced.

As with the A2020, I think that this is the first time on Discuss O Mat that a picture of the following machine has ever been posted.
Again, as with the A2020, the following model was seldom if ever mentioned and probably never advertsied, other than within the official brochures

Still within the Aluminium Series, the replacement for the A2020 was the model A2044 Electronic 800....

1978 starts with a dose of 'New Magic'!

Another new year and another styling change was ushered in, with the arrival of the 'New Magic' series of machines.

For the cheapest machine in the range, the word 'Electronic' was dropped and the 'Automatic' returned, in the form of the A3090.

This machine was actually a precursor machine and had been introduced in 1977, before the rest of the series.
The A3090 initially appeared in the same brochure as the A3058, A3008 and D6008!

The cold fill only was dropped - the A3090 was Hot and Cold fill - and, for the first time, the cheapest model in the range received a powder drawer.

It also was supplied with different coloured inserts for the door release lever and the programmer dial cap - Aegean Gold, Tea Green and Poppy Red...

Hi Chris.

Yep - the Keymatic of Mike's you are referring to is an A3008.

Rare or common - they are all rare exceedingly rare but, judgoing by the lack of documentation or photos or memories of them, I would say that the A2020 and A2044 are the rarest of the Aluminium Series.

and an all new model introduced....

the A3064 Selectamatic 1100.

Basically a Keymatic, but with the keyplates being replaced by rotary dial, this model appears to have been seldom advertised and hardly ever mentioned in any official documentation.

Weird thing about this model was that you didnt pull the dial to turn the machine on, but you pushed it in, instead.

As with the A2020, the pictures below (I think I am right in saying) are the only ones people have ever seen of this machine.

Very rare!

Replacing the Hoover branded exclusives, the Electricity Board had Hoover produce 3 washers and 1 dryer over 4 years.

with the arrival of the A3060 1100, in 1978, the elctricity board had to have its own derivitive.

This was in the form of the A3E08 and this is the only image I have of this model, though one can be spied on the bottom row of 'The Secret Life of the Washing Machine' pyramid...

and the matching dryer for the entire series was model D6E06.

The dryer was the only electra model to be given a descriptive title - 'dryer de luxe' - with the 3 washing machines all simply being branded 'electra'.

Models A2E04 and D6E06 (and to a large extent the A3E02) were the last machines using pure Matchbox styling.
The Matchbox facia style, introduced in 1970, finally died just after Christmas 1979/80...

My nanna had the A3058 Electronic deluxe 800. I can remember the dark blue speckled inner enameled drum & the black door seal. They was no 500rpm slow spin. The spin speed was fixed at 800rpm through out the programme. Can't remember if it spinned on the rinse cycles if the synthetics, delicates half spin swirl button was pressed in. I think it just did a short final spin burst at 800rpm then it did the slow anti-crease tumbles. I could possibly have the model number wrong because i dont think it had a fabric conditioner section.

good thread!

hey, good thread thanks for sharing it with us,
both sets of my grandparents had hoovers from the 80's, and coincidentally, both replaced them with WMA hotpoints at around the same time!

my dads mum&dad had a late 80's (i think 1987) hoover electron 1100 in black and white, never really used high water levels which i am now shocked at knowing that most hoovers from that time did,
and then my mum's mum&dad had one which i cant quite emember, i think this one was an early 90's one though, i have a feeling it was a beige/creamy colour, and that was always on with extremely high water levels lol, and coz its my nana, and she uses alot of daz in 1 go it was usually packed 3/4 up the door with suds haha. this machine died of bad bearrings :( suprise suprise lol.
she also had the matching dryer, coming to think of it i think they were logic's or something and that didnt die she gave that to my auntie so she could get another matching pair (died this year, think it was the belt but they didnt know that and they thought something was badly wrong coz the drum jolted, if only i was there :(:()
so, in 2001 my nana bought a WMA10 (shit but fun to watch spin) it never spun balanced and i wouldnt dare go in the room when it was spinning the dog bed! this has now been replaced as it died of bad bearrings in 2009 (8 yrs old) Replaced with WML540 :@.

back to my dads parents, in 2004 their hoover electron 1100 broke at 17 years of age and that was due to failed door interlock (yes, i know it could have been fixed, they didnt know any better) replaced with a WMA64.... which i LOVED! it had a ffwd button so you could skip the wash when u thougt it had enough and a powerstream system that usually made the wash sudsy, loved it, and i loved the beep of the buttons haha. this was still running healthy at 7 years of age when they moved to where they are now with aeg's and boschs, but unfortunately the foolish new owner got rid of the WMA and left it outside to rott (RIP), and alongside it my grandparents indesit omega dishwasher :'( ahh well its their choice lol.

thanks for listening to me go on and on and on,
from george :)

Hi Craig.

Methinks that your mother had the A3006 Automatic De Luxe, rather than the A3058 Electronic deluxe.
When the A3058 was introduced, Hoover gave it a stainless steel tub rather than the enamel tub.

Both models were 800rpm only with, as you say, the option being short spin rather than slow spin.
Might be wrong but was generally 4mins at 800rpm for long and 20seconds at 800rpm for short.

Mike has an A3006, but it is awaiting a suitable motor before being powered up again. One day....

Hi Jacob.

will save the Logics and Ecologics for another time. Although being a lot more recent, than the machines being covered in this thread, info about the exclusives is really scare and unfortunately there were lots of exclusives.

A bit more research to do, but will make a thread about them one day I am sure.

Mystery machine...A3170 Automatic 800

as was the case with the A2020, A2044 and both Selectamatics, the Hoover A3170 Automatic 800 was an ignored model.

Probably introduced just before the start of the Electron branded machines, as the second budget round door machine, it was likely to have not been in production for all that long.
As such, apart from a single sided A4 servicing leaflet, information on this machine is hard to come buy and I have never seen a photo of it.

Anyone?

Hi Paul

Firstly fabulous thread and I appreciate the time and effort you are putting into it.

Secondly you have cleared up a mystery for me. I now know the first second hand dryer I purchased when I got my flat in 1996 was a D6074. I have never known the model number so great to find out the info.

Its demise was due to the motor keep cutting out. I would have to let it sit and it would start again but eventually it wouldn't start at all. I new nothing about dryers then so it got replaced.

Thanks for the info.

Mark

Glad that you are enjoying the thread and that it has proved useful to you, in being able to identify your first dryer.
Thats a definite aim of this thread - to help people get an idea of what was made, when it was made and help in identifying machines generally.

The Hoover A3172 Electronic 1100E our second automatic washer after the Creda de luxe rhythm spin square door. I used to love messing about with the 1100,800 & 500rpm buttons. You could easily modify the programmes.

Lovely machines, so jealous i dont have anything of the sort, or an old hotty!
My Grandparents used to have a Hoover Electron 1100 from 1987 and that lasted for 17 years without a single repair! Replaced with a WMA which i actually didnt mind as it was a WMA64 with the buttons, display and powerstream :)
My other Grandparents had one from a bit later, Hoover Ecologic or a Logic in a Grey/creamy colour, this however, only lasted 10 years as my nana had a habit of putting too much Daz in 1 wash and the bearrings died! :( loved it because it was fun to watch, and in its final years, me only being a small child made it fun when it was doing severe unbalanced spins! Also replaced with a WMA in 2002 coincidentally, which the bearrings failed on in 2009, then replaced with a WML540 :(,
cheers, George

I always wondered about the Aristocrat machines, what was that all about? Also noticed there are alot of different models, but they all tend to do the same programmes more or less. My mums old silver and orange Electronic 1100 had practically the same programmes as my school mates mums Logic 1600. I mainly remember seeing Hoover machines with the Queens crest on them. Wondered why they were never on the twin tubs! Great thread btw, brings back memories!

Royal appointment

Hi sudreturn,

just looked the royal crest is on the T5054 and T5090 next to the spin lid release, and on the matching spinarinse.

Can't find a decent photo of the twin tubs, but you can see the crest anyway.

Ok, yes I'm showing off the bridging unit lol

Hi guys.

Another dose of Hoover time again, with the first pure Electron series.
I say pure, due to the first Electron series simply being warmed over Smoother Hoovers.

The 2nd generation Electrons were facially much different, boasting square buttons and a powder draw push button, rather than a finger grab in the powder drawer facia itself.
This latter feature, as well as the door release button, became the bain of these and most other Electrons.
Over time, both these buttons invariably ceased to work, with the lever to push the drawer open breaking or getting gunked up to the point where it ceased to function smoothly.
Also, years of use sees the plastic lugs behind the door release button breaking, rendering this function inoperable too.
If you have an electron with both features working - you have a rare-un.
Only apply enough pressure on the door release to open the door - if you are heavy handed, one day you will push the button through its lugs.

Here goes then!
As before, it will be core range first, followed by exclusives.

First off - the A3252 Electron 600, complete with an induction motor - one of only two standard bodyshell quiet Hoovers:-)

The machine below is mine and Robs and is awaiting a heavy rebuild, including a replacement outer tub and facia repairs (note that the powder push button and door release button are broken).

As with many of this series of electrons, this too is possibly the first time a picture of this model has ever been posted...

Crease guard button

ozzie908's profile picture
Is for when using the delicate cycles at the last rinse the machine stops and remains full of water thus suspending the clothes to prevent creasing !
When you wish to remove the laundry from the washer you press the crease guard button and it advances the timer to drain/slow spin.

The last few models have jogged my memory a bit. I do remember my mum having the Hoover Electronic 800 with the matchbox style rocker switch. The fascia was in brown if I remember. I remember that the dial sometimes stuck slightly on the rinse part of F (woolens) so it would fill and empty at the same time. Wasn't a great machine, very noisy and prone to spinning out of balance. I remember the washer needing a new pump, my dad replaced it, and with a drum full of wet washing, my mum turned the dial to G (final spin), but she turned it one click past the G, so you can guess..... The machine went straight into spin. The washer must have jumped a foot in the air a few times, and the door eventually flew open. The door catch had been smashed. My mum lost her rag a bit, wheeled out the trusty 60's Hoovermatic from the shed and used that for a week until she purchased a second hand Colston automatic washer-dryer.....another horrid machine. After that, she decided to buy a brand new washer for the first time since her "bottom drawer" Colston Concorde twin tub in 1975. One of the early Whirlpool washers with the push in dial. I seem to remember there was an exact same machine on the market at the time but badged Philips-Whirlpool. Can't remember the model.

my mum had the electron 800 a3264!! panel colour was like british racing green w ith gold trim on the door!! purchased from rumbelows!! powder drawer spring rusted away!! machine lasted 11 years with only a motor, door rubber and soap drawer to drum rubber needing repair/replacement! died of old age replaced by tricity bendix caw1000. the gold trim was on the door glue wore off so trim would tap away when machine spun!! mum was,nt happy when i tugged the trim off.

My grandmother in the UK had a second hand A3354 Electron 800 for about two years IIRC. This was her first Automatic she had bought after going through a few Hoover wringers and then a Servis Supertwin which she absolutely loved, sadly banished to the coal shed after its spinner motor died. I wonder if it is still there, i hope it is!

The A3354 she loved because of its Automatic quality, she could just start it and leave it and go to work down't pub (which was called The Peggy Tub in Stocksbridge near Sheffield, coincidence much?) and come back and it was finished. As time went on she used the Delay Start dial, i remember she used to turn it to 12 before she went to work in the evenings, come home, go to bed around midnight and by the time she got up at 6am it was on what she used to call its 'middle spin' (the machine span twice in the cottons bit, once in the between the four rinses and the final 800spin).

She used programs C and J mainly. C was 95* for all her sheets towels and nighties and such which could stand that temp. J was Minimum Iron 50* for all her skirts, blouses and bras and such. She occasionally used the White Nylon program for her net curtains (which got heavily abused due to her chain smoking 30 Berkley Red a day!) I remember she made sure they went in folded neatly as she reckoned they had more chance coming out folded.......riiiiight.

She never used the soap dispenser button release, not sure wether she knew what it did to be honest, she always just grabbed underneath it and pulled. Crease Guard button was never used either, she just got me to 'get up and shift wesher on will ya love'. This phrase became more prominent when its timer motor conked out and had to be manually shifted on through its cycle all the time, bless her for putting up with it although she only did her washing when i was around on the weekend because her arthritis was so bad it was easier to get me to take care of shifting it on instead of her having to get up and down all the time.

Its amazing when you see these things how much you remember as you start to think, like a few memories in the back of the mind come out stretch their little memory legs haha, great.

Reminds me of being a kid again, i love it!

I'll be back there in the UK in November this year, I think she said shes got an Indesit now, wonder what I am going to make of that!

Here is the great woman when she came for recent visit to us in Australia, bless her she taught me everything i know about how to wash properly, using hot temps and good detergents and the benefits of a high speed spin dry!

Matt

hey quick question guys

just looking through this thread again i noticed the Hoover Selectamatic, never seen one of these before, can anyone explain how the Selectamatic system worked? I'm guessing its something to do with the timer and you select a letter and press start and that dial does not move its the timeline in the console which indicates the sequence. Am i right? :-P

Hi Sudsreturn, Scott and Matt.

Thanks for posting your memories of the more obscure members of the elctron family.
The pictures posted of them are the only ones I have, but the one problems with Hoover Instruction manuals is that they are black and white and tend to be of very varying photographic quality, to put it mildly!

Out of focus, washed out or just plain too dark, so as to be virtually unable to see anything at all seem to have been the order of the day through the 1980s - the cover photo for the A3108 is ridiculous!

As such, memories are an important part of learning about said machines and thankyou to Scott for telling us about the A3264!
A full British Racing Green panel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with gold trim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never knew that at all and its impossible to tell from the manual photo that its anything other than ordinary.

Something like this then?....

Hi Matt.

I dont know of many people who used the powder push button and yet they still all got broken.
Much easier just to grab under the facia and pull - much simpler.

You will have to show your gran this thread and see if she recognises her old machine.

Paul

Post# 537866 , Reply# 161   8/18/2011 at 13:30 (4,628 days old) by matchboxpaul (U.K)

Forgot to mention Matt.

The Selectamatic!!!!

The A3064 used the lightshow from the A3062 Keymatic for its display, in the form of individual lights illuminating symbols, whereas the A3114 was a copy of the A3112 Keymatic and used a glowing timeline arrangement for its display.

The timeline light is on a hinged arm, which is dragged across the machine, as the programme progresses.
A pictures of the internals of Mathew's (keymatic3203) A3114 Selectamatic is below.

Behind the Selectamatic dial is essentially a permanently fitted, cylindrical keyplate, covered in cutouts.
As you turn the dial, your are mimicking turning a Keymatic keyplate in your hand and pushing it into the machine.
Once selected, in the same way you push the keyplate into a Keymatic, you push the dial inwards on the Selectamatic.
The machine then does the click click clickety click thing, as the reader identifies the notches and activates the programme.

The indicator arm is attached above the timer, towards the back of the machine....

Starting with the bargain basement but, as with the A3252, very quiet (induction fitted) A3332 Energy Control.

I have always thought that someone made a mistake when typing up the model number of this machine and that the mistake stuck - I am sure this machine was meant to be the A3342...

The Dryers.....

Basic model D6214 Electron Dryer.

No angled facia dryers were ever produced to match the 3rd Series Electron washers so, if we were being picky, we could say that the A3332/44/46/48/50 and 08 nver had true matching dryers to go with them.

They do look smart nonetheless....

Back to earlier in the decade,

The keymatic A3112, in full Brushed stainless steel effect.

This isn't an exclusive, just one that over the years the lacquer has been warn off, but after initial disapointment at it not being mint, I think it would look quite contempory in a run of gloss white units and a stainless steel oven etc.

I personally would like to remove the british bulldog, as it is quite warn and fade, I think the machine would look better without it, what do you think?

Thanks for sharing all those great pictures. It's a wonderful thread! Now about that Selectamatic. Do I understand it right that the dial is not a timer but more a programme selector? It doesn't turn during the programme, but stays in the same position, right?

Hi Mathew, Louis and Scott.

Mathew - great to finally see nice big portrait photo of your A3112 Keymatic 1100. It's different but, as we all get over the initial shock of it, we all come to the quick realisation that it looks SUPERB!
I am not going to say one way or the other about the sticker, apart from to say that I'd leave it on! lol :-)
As woth all these series of machines, its the basic versions that are missing - now you have an A3110, 3112 and 3114 we have to find you a 3108, 3166 and 3170. May the serach continue.

Louis - the Selectamatic is a great machine, though when i saw the internals for the first time, the indicator lever alarmed me somewhat. Made of old plastic, with a hinge half way along.
Fires back with some force too - I was just waiting for a snapping plastic sound. Paranoid about plastic - thats what owning many Hotpoint 95's does to you :-)

Scott - my monitor is pants and when I looked at the 'British racing Green' that I posted I thought 'way too light'.
It really does sound like a smart machine. Mathew has mentioned to me before about seeing a green facia'd electron and maybe your mums machine was it.

Paul

Great Thread,

My parent had two Keymatic which my father tried to get working (they couldn't afford a washer after buying a house)

Then they got a Electra similar to A3E08 but it had fours buttons as I recall. Economy, Half spin, rinse hold and wool wash.

Does anyone have a picture of that model?

My dad has all the old photos I could try to find the one with that machine.
(I'd give my ASEA and my right arm for one of those but I have a feeling that parts aren't easy to obtain.)

Model A3474 in the 'all white' scheme.
As with Polar White Hotpoints, this scheme yellowed terribly in the facia department...

Do you have any pictures and information on the Hoover Ecologic 800 Round Door in beige?

Thanks

The 'all white' dryer...

Hoover simply kept the D6228 dryer in production, to match the A3474.
Originally the D6228 dryer was introduced to match the 'all white' A3308 Computer Control 1100.
For a picture of the D6228, see earlier in this thread.

Hi Jacob.

Will cover the Ecologics in another thread, at a later date.
Bear with me.

The final core model dryer was the D6284 Autosense, budget machine.

This model straddled the end of the Electron series and start of the Logics, so appears in both series brochures...

Model A8512, as with the D6284 Autosense Dryer, straddled the end of the Electron series and start of the Logics and can be found in the first Logic brochures.

The budget Logic washer dryers continued to use this facia style, though they were branded as Logics and not Electrons...

The final exclusives!

None of these machines had a matching dryer and were end of the run machines, though the end of the run lasted through to the early 1990s!

First off was model A3588 Electron 800 Exclusive, for Currys....

Model A3688 was the final Computer Control 1100 and boasted the increased drum capacity of the Logic series machines, as well as the inset kick strip bodyshell.
The machine below belongs to Mike King and is the only photo I have of such a machine...

The LAST Electron 800!

I make no apologies for using the same photographs as for their predecessor models, as these are the pictures from their actual instruction manuals.

Model A3594 was replaced by model A3770, which boasted the Logics increased drum capacity...

Model A3596 was replaced by model A3772 which, like with the A3770, boasted the Logics increased drum capacity...

There you go then!

Thats the Hoover story from the first Keymatic in 1961, through to the last Electron circa 1990.

The Logic's were introduced circa 1986/87 and the last batch of Electron exclusives were produced deep into the Logic production run and almost made contact with the Ecologics.

I hope to cover the Logics and Ecologics soon in another thread.

Hope this thread has proved an intersting read and will prove to be a useful refernce for the future.

Just before I sign off, I will just post these last two pieces of information...

Thanks Paul!

Been a while since I last posted here but this thread for certain can't go without acknowledgement! It must have taken an awful lot of time and effort to gather up and post all of these pictures and info, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who really appreciates it!

Some really fantastic machines in this thread, some of which I recognise as the machines friends and relatives had, but never knew exactly what model they were, being that they were exclusive machines (my best friend's parent's had the Energy Control 800 A3594 when we were growing up, never knew which one it was until now!).

Whilst I wouldn't say no to any of these machines, to be able to go back to the mid 80s and buy that beautiful Comet exclusive Electron 1100 A3386 would be a dream! (Naturally I would need the all white kitchen with bright red tile grout and accessories to match it ;))

Thanks again Paul for some great reading!

Matt

Hi Phil.

Beleive me, it takes a while and my geriatric computer can only just cope with all the photos I have posted (apologies of others are in the same boat as me).

Pleased that you now have some other snippets of information on the D6284.

Paul

Hiya Matt.

Good to hear from you again!

The thread is the culmination of the last 4 years of research and is something I have been meaning to do for a while.

Just like with Hass and his excellent advert channel on youtube, its always useful to be able to go to one place for information.
I hope that this thread will be a useful reference for Hoover laundry products and am pleased that it has jogged some memories for you, as well as identifying some machines you have encountered over the years.

The Comet exclusive grey is a very fetching shade, I agree.
So very 80s.
Finding a good one might be a tad difficult though as, as with the 'all white' models, the grey tended to go off a bit.
Saw an A3386 last year and it was a bit grubby to say the least. There is also an A3384 preserved and in a mates restoration queue.
Keep your eyes peeled - one will roll along one day, with your name on it.

Good to see you back.
paul

Matchbox developments

The 3236H now has a matching dryer, in the form of one of the two recently available half panel 3022's.
They look great together!

Both of 1971 vintage, the 3022 had its 40th birthday in March and the 3236H will be 40 sometime next month....

brilliant thread about all these Hoover's, can't believe they've made so many different models, but I like the Computer Control 1's best so I'd take 1 of them lol,

maybe it's time 2 do the next chapter in the Hoover story by doing the 1st Logic to Final EcoLogic, I'm sure many of us on here will be looking forward to that, so I'll watch this space 4 now :)

Early 2014 Update

Hi guys.
sorry for bumping this thread up, especially as if your computer is getting on a bit, it might take an age to load up.

As this is a thread detailing all of Hoover UK's laundry products, a couple of recent developments necessitate (spelling?) an update.

First off, here is a better picture of the Electra A3E10 Electronic 800 - the electricity board version of the Smoother Hoover A3108.

I picked up this machine two weekends ago, after its previous owners regretfully decided to retire it, after 33 years of service (drum bearings are on the verge of seizing, following sudden bearing failure).
It was bought in the Solihull branch of the Midlands Electricity Board back in September 1980.
They offered it to me and are really pleased that it has entered a gentle retirement, where it will continue to be appreciated. Many thanks to Ann and her husband, up in Windermere....

Now here is a rare-un!

First off, many, many, many thanks to Alan (alanlondon), who is treating us all to some absolutely classic brochures detailing very rare and little known about machines. The Servis Mk302 Continental brochure, provided my first ever viewing of this particularly obscure model and this evening treat has been the New-Pol brochure. Many thanks.

Yesterdays brochure detailed the Carlton offerings from Currys and provided the first proper sightings of the model that Currys commissioned from Hoover.

The first possible sighting was in the famous Secret Life of the Washing Machine pyramid, but it was always a case of 'possibly could be', rather than 'definitely is'.
2nd row down on the left...

Now here is a rare-un!

Then there was this photograph of a Hoover employee, wiring up a mystery fascia.
Again, a case of 'could be, but don't know for sure'...

Now here is a rare-un - model A3C16

Thanks to Alan, we are now able to confirm the above two suspicions and provide a photo of the:

CARLTON A3C16 electronic deluxe - based on the A3110 and with a rather unusual black door trim.

Thanks again Alan - really appreciate you sharing your brochure collection and revealing mystery machines to us.

Just ONE washer model to discover!

The only Hoover washing machine missing from this thread, that was produced for and sold in the UK, is the Hoover A3170 Electronic 800.

Where are you oh A3170?
:-)

Regards to all

Did the Logic/Ecologic family thread ever get written up? Their history is pretty confusing, what with every different fascia colour getting its own model number! Then there's the different spin speeds, 1200, 1250, 1300...

Hi Adam.

Its a Hoover D6526 Autosense Dryer, the budget dryer from the 'Logic' range, with that particular one being from around 1989 as it has the updated name font on the fascia.
Hope that helps :-)

What a very nice timeline and some interesting infos about Hoover machines.

About the Topline in reply #87, it's not made by Brandt but by Thomson, that's the same industry group but totally different construction.
Brandt machines have on door (usually with glass) and a rectangular seal while Thomson are two doors.

Here's on my website some photos of French Hoover machines made by Thomson :
statomatic.e-monsite.com/pages/au...

I Also like the A1004 in reply #34, I remember seeing a similar model with orange circled knobs called A3239 / De Luxe 128 sold in France and Belgium, I miss that machine.

A3156 Autocare 1100

Series Five, Episode One of 'Sorry!' (with Ronnie Corbett as Timothy Lumsden), apparently features this machine. About 5 minutes into the episode.

The machine seems to be identical to the pics in Reply #106, above.

In previous episodes, there was a Hotpoint toploader usually with 'Drive' or 'Bold' powder sitting on it - although Mrs Lumsden complained about having to do washing in a "1958 Goblin" towards the end of series four.
