Belt drive, motor is working , to me everything seems to be working? i turn the agitator by hand . i dont really understand the screw rubber washer. the screw turns, but slips on the rubber washer ? is that the only part on top , is the screw and washer ?

I can probably help you, but the internet police here at work have blocked your photo server (fortunately they don't know about AW.org yet).

Can you just post the pics here? It's a lot easier.

If the screw is loosened (hold the bottom of the agitator while you turn the screw counter-clockwise), remove the screw completely by pulling up on it. You can then pull the agitator straight up. This will require some effort.

The rubber seal is REQUIRED for proper machine operation as without it water will seap under the agitator and into the spin bearings and gearcase.

This applies to both belt-drive and direct drive models.

Oh good - sorry I didn't see the pics while I was typing my reply.

That screw in your hand, is that the replacement? The threads on it look stripped, or is it just the picture?

There is a lot of debris in the auger (the corkscrew part of the agitator), which looks unusual to me. What is not working in the agitator?

The screw is the replacement, it is not stripped , i popped the top corkscrew off, that and the parts? look fine , i think the black debri is from the old rubber washer that goes with the screw , how do i get the bottom of the agitator off, seems to have some play , like a bearing is out?

with the screw removed, the whole agitator should lift right out......

Again, what part of the agitator is not working?

Post# 535175 , Reply# 10   8/5/2011 at 09:57 (4,619 days old) by ted ()

it seemed to me that the screw was the problem ? the agitator seemed to want to work but the screw was slipping, like the inside threads are stripped? the black stuff appears to be carbon? also now the bottom of the agitator is`nt pulling out

I told you above that you can pull the agitator straight up once the screw is out. That agitator will not be too difficult to remove provided the splines on the agitator shaft have not rusted and frozen the agitator to the shaft.

The debris from the old seal is very unusual and puzzling. There is no reason for it to be shredded, not that I've ever seen anyway. The shoe of the agitator (the part that has the two tabs and the horseshoe shaped holes) may have been turning under the seal, but usually all those parts move together and there should never be any friction or gouging that would shred a neoprene rubber seal.

As far as 'play', there are bearings under the agitator in several places which can wear, but we won't have a clue of that until you get the agitator out.

Well the agitator is either getting stuck on the splines or you're pulling the whole agitator shaft up with the agitator.

You could try some penetrating oil or a preparation like that and spray it liberally down the screw hole in the center, and see if the agitator will eventually give way. It will need time to work. If the agitator is indeed sliding on the splines but then getting stuck, this might help, though I have always seen them either free to come off or stuck tight without any movement.

Unfortunately, I have had to split old agitators with a big screw driver to get them off the shaft, which not only destroys the agitator but usually yields ugly splines which are hard to re-use. If you can borrow a repair person's agitamer, this will save the agitator, but you have to find someone who has one.

i sprayed some penetrating oil on , and have been working slowly off it is sliding up slowly . Whatever this carbonlike stuff is, i think is my problem, if i can get the agitator off and clean it up , i think it will work .

After 3/4 of a can of penetrating oil , ran out , i used windex! and soon she popped off !!! Now what was u saying about splines , which ones do i need to worry about being bad ?

Ok , The splines on the top of the drive are all but gone and the splines on the inner top of the agitator are completely gone !!!

The requires replacing the agitator drive shaft in the transmission, and of course also the agitator.

Yup , i~m in awe that the metal splines wore out against the plasic ! It also came to me that the what i thought was this carbon substance , seems to have been JB Weld type product that someone put on there as a fix that has finally broke down. Bought this washer at a appliance store-used , about ten years ago .

Unfortunately that's what some unscrupulous used appliance stores will sell you.

BUT, that said, take us some more pictures and post them here, and I'll look at the carnage and tell you what I think. I have had to deal with this sort of topic more than a few times.

We may yet be able to help you wring another few years out of this machine. It was in the top three most popular Kenmore models during the mid 1980s.

I've seen the metal splines do that before - agitator 1, metal splilnes 0. It's because the splines start to rust when they get too moist, then they just dissolve. The plastic used in these agitators is pretty tough so it just chews up the weakening metal. I've usually been able to re-use the agitator as long as I didn't have to break it out. The JB weld or whatever is in there probably ruined the plastic.

Step one

You will need to drop the gearcase from the machine and take it to a workbench for internal surgery.
