For sometime now the mechanical timer on my Miele w1070 sticks at the first rinse and will not advance without a (gentle) nudge. Once done the thing works fine and only does this for the PP cycle.

As one has the Miele serviceman coming out next week for another issue was going to order and have a new timer installed; that was until I got the price *400* USD.

However one is also up against the following:

Miele no longer imports parts for the 1000, and 1900 series washers. So whatever stock is on these shores is all there is, and once they are gone that will be that. Some parts however are still in use for current Miele washers and in that case you find a "sub" number is listed for the original part, however since Miele no longer produces mechanical timer controlled washers don't think that will be an option going forward.

Spoke to Miele parts today about what is left of parts for these old girls, and while things like the motor (1500 USD) are listed as "NLA" there is some limited stock, so guess one is wondering is it worth it order and have the timer installed.

My one main worry about my unit are the bearings and motor. When the Miele guy is here next week will take alook at the back of the drum (as much as one can see with the top off) and peek on the rear bearing to see if there are any signs of leaks/rust. The motor is simply something one will have to ask the tech if it "sounds" ok. While Miele does have motors in stock and even has a price listed for collection, transport, motor swap and return the impression one has been given is they won't do it for love nor money. Was told the only reason it was/is ever done comes when a motor gives out under warranty. That does not explain why there is a price spec, but didn't press the issue.

Guess what one is trying to get at is it a good idea to swap out an otherwise good timer motor for new given the age of this machine. I mean what if a major motor or bearing failure occurs in the next several years? Well suppose one could break down the unit for parts to sell on! *LOL*

In my experience with Benz & Beemers, parts are overpriced and service is required rather frequently, a trait common to many German products, the typical and inevitable result of obsessive Teutonic over-engineering. Thus, in contemplating replacement, one might consider a simpler, but still well performing, alternative. The bottom line: stellar cleaning performance with minimal fabric damage. The situation is not unlike cooking with the grossly overrated and underperforming, Viking and other trendy modern high end ranges, imo. 50 yr old Chambers have them beat in virtually every way, and are bulletproof to boot. Why fix an overpriced lemon.
