While I truly appreciate this forum's founder, collectors and enthusiasts (and expertise so many of you share) I am not meant to collect vintage appliances, just be an admirer :-). In 2008 we acquired this beloved 1962 RCA WP Imperial dryer from Mark (LightedControls). It has been a FAITHFUL daily driver but now with three dogs, and their bedding, we need a LARGE capacity dryer. She is PURTY but she ain't a BIG gal, rather petite! (her capacity is about 4 cubic feet?).
We adopted her for $275 because of LOOKS and features (lighted console, porthole window) and the care shown by her former owner. The paint is not perfect but original. All cycles, the lights, and the two speeds are working. Timer starts and stops on all cycles, drum light works, all temperature settings work great; the door creaks but does close with the use of velcro (and has worked quite well this way for us). She does not have her front 'legs' you can see in the lower right of the picture a piece of foam used to balance her. The picture angle makes it look like the paint is scratched above the door handle, but it is not. She appears to have what may be her original lint filter, but does not have the fragrance bottle, just a blank space near the lint filter). Her very first owner (not Mark) must have kept her in a damp basement, the base of her body does have some rust which was touched up prior to our adoption in 2008. Her paint is not perfect at the base but the top, door and overall front appearance is nice. I would prefer she be adopted by an AW member. If you can make a reasonable offer --AND collect her before the end of September-- (I have NO storage) she can be YOURS! The 4-prong cord will be included. Other pictures available upon request. Email: rstuessy@sc.rr.com.

When we first acquired her, I wasn't sure how to start a cycle. One turns the dial to the amount of time then pushes in one of the heat/air settings and it begins. Our favorite cycle for bath towels is P.P. at 40 minutes on HIGH, when it times down to 10 minutes it does not add much -if any- heat and the results are perfectly dry not-baked towels. I really wish we had room to keep her :(...

I've never heard of 2 speeds on a dryer!

request, close-up (3)...cycle selection

stainfighter's profile picture
...where one can see that a button has been selected. The button stays in place after it is pushed. If one needs to check the dryness of clothes just open the door, then push the button to restart. One can also switch temperature mid-cycle by pushing a different button, it has a distinct 'click' when a selection is made. The drum and console lights come on as soon as you turn the timer dial on and stay on until the cycle completes; the timer 'click's when it reaches off.

Multiple speed Whirlpool dryers

dadoes's profile picture

Two-speed on this model does not refer to two tumble speeds. The speed control changes the airflow rate for a faster or slower drying rate by shifting the blower belt on a dual-diameter pulley. Not sure, the heating element may be dual-wattage.

When Whirlpool went to the direct-drive blower design, airflow rate was changed via a damper door in the blower housing.

There were models in the early 1970s with THREE and then two tumble speeds, achieved by shifting the drum belt along a tapered-diameter motor pulley.

Dual-wattage heating element?...

stainfighter's profile picture
...DADoES knows more about this baby than do I, it does run quieter on 'Normal' (not that it is roaring loud on 'Super'). It is not as loud as say a Norge dryer. Probably not as quiet as a modern dryer but it's not bothersome - actually pleasant (to me).

I haven't noticed any difference in heat output, it seems like all temperature options work the same??

Not really sure how one can tell if it is a dual-element, do you know DADoES???
If needed I can post a pic of the back with the panel removed, just let me know...

This control panel is JUST like the Imperial Set

philcobendixduo's profile picture
In my message (THREAD 35967) I inquired about this very machine - except ours did not have a window in the door like this one does.

Lighted panel - exactly the same.

Normal and Super speed selector with indicator light, buttons and timer dial - exactly the same.

Only difference seems to be no window in the one we had - just had a solid door.

Now if only this dryer had the matching washer! Did it have a window in the lid as well?

No, the washer did not

have a window in its lid. The fact that the washer did not have a window lid was one of my great disappointments in my childhood. We had the matching washer, and a Maytag dryer.

That's the dryer I grew up with, excepting the color and the window in the door. I would love to get me grubby hands on it! Is it electric? Please say yes.

it is electric...another member said they are very interested as well...as far as shipping I've had success with both Creighters & Freighters and U-Crate.

Interested, but

I have a 1960 RCA Imperial Mark 12 washer, not a perfect match but darn close. However, my budget just won't currently allow me to think about this one, no way.
Best of luck to the happy buyer!

PINK WP ELECTRIC DRYER

combo52's profile picture

This dryer does [ or is supposed to have ] a dual wattage element, it would change from 5600 to 4600 watts when turned from super to normal. This dryer did not have an air-freshener [ no WP dryer ever did this as this was a KM only feature ] The opening next to the lint filter was where you poured in water for the clothes damping feature if you wanted to re-dampen clothing for ironing.

The drum in this dryer is far closer to 5 cubic than four and these do a very good drying with no hot spots. But unfortunately all WP built dryers before 1966-7 with the direct drive blower use about 25% more power and are not as fast in the electric versions as the gas models could faster.

I would have been silly to have put a window on a WP built TL washer, as they always steam up and get dirty with mineral and dirt and detergent deposits. WP always allowed you to have the lid open during everything except the spin cycle anyway, WPs were very well behaved washers and did not splash much. The only two TL washer manufactories that sometimes installed windows were Kelvinator and Frigidare, both splashers.

This dryer was originally part of Bob OF Hollywoods collection and it is neat to see that it is still out there running. It is little newer than 1962, it is either a 1963 or 4 machine, if you post the model and serial #s we can tell for sure.I to hope someone here gets it.

I wish I could but shipping would be way off for me right now, and I couldn't afford to get it. I hope someone can take ownership soon.

"Reasonable" offer is?

stainfighter's profile picture
I've gotten the usual responses...gee I wish it was closer, just can't do it right now...IF this were its twin (washer) it would have been already claimed.

Is $125 too much to ask???

Price is fine

akronman's profile picture
$125 isn't bad, but it's the distance and freight costs that keep folks from buying. For many of us, one necessity is finding these great old machines NEARBY.
