Hi, can anybody tell me whether Electra ever made it to Ireland under ESB or not?

James.

ESB

I doubt it very much as it was a brand name of the British electrical supply companies, although there might have been the odd one crossed the border from NI. Also EBNI (VERY rare I would suspect) and (later) NIES

Yes it was, extensively!

Actually Electra was extensively sold through the ESB retail units in the early to mid 1980s - through this entire period, the ESB did not sell Hotpoint products, which were only available at independents. Limited model range with a twintub - Hotpoint 1464 rebadged, automatic a Hoover rebadge, and various fridges etc. The branded range was dominated by Candy for cheaper FLs and GE for the Filter-flo top-loader and matching dryer, which were very popular here.

The Electra brand was dropped with a complete change of sales direction in the late 80s, when Hotpoint re-emerged in Ireland as the ESB's core brand, and thus it remained until the retail arm of the ESB was wound up.

Mind you, things were a bit different in the top right hand corner to the rest of the country and although I visited Eire quite a few times during this period my mind was on things (largely) other than appliances. And I would say that by this time the British electricity boards hand pretty much dropped the Electra name, having moved to branded exclusives.
