Some may remember my thread on the purchase of a 1960 Parnall Auto-Dry tumble dryer, about 8 months ago.
This is the identical dryer to the one I was brought up with.

Well, ever since buying the dryer I have been on the hunt for the correct owner's manual for my model of dryer, and I have been checking Ebay every day since.
A few months ago I spotted the manual for the earlier 1950s model, which gave me hope that eventually I would maybe find one for my machine, and then a couple of weeks or so ago, Bingo!! Isn't the internet a great thing!!
I guess I am lucky, because there must be many others who have been searching much longer for similar hard to find items, and have still had no joy.

First up is the dryer itself, and then scans of the manual will follow.

Hi Doug,

Congratulatoins! Is it full size or commercial as it looks bigger to me?

Hi Christopher. Thanks!

Re your question, were you asking if the dryer was originally for commercial use? I think these were just made for the home. My photos are a bit large!

Hi Doug.

Thanks. nah the scans are about right.

Now you just have to find one of these!...

Yes if I had the space I think I'd have to have one of them!
The last one like mine that I saw on Ebay didn't sell.... and the guy listing it told me he lived next door to a scrap dealer. I couldn't bring myself to asking him what became of that poor machine afterwards! :-(

Hi Doug.

Apologies for not replying sooner (honestly thought I had left a comment before).

Congrats on finding the paperwork to go with your dryer. its always nice to be able to tell a fuller story of a machine, by having the right manual to go with it.

Thanks also for posting the lovely scans of the pages - perfect size and completely legible.
Saved to my computer library.

Paul

Christopher, I have a nasty feeling that the other one on Ebay was scrapped. I've not seen it re-listed. :-( I did try and persuade the guy that it was worth saving, and that I was sure he'd find another owner for it eventually. I just hope he's either decided to keep it, or that someone else has seen it and bought it from him. :-)

Paul, good to hear from you! I'm glad you liked the scans, and that you've saved them to your computer library!

Mike, no, the Parnall is mainly just a 'show piece' in the kitchen, with the occasional run. It dries clothes faster than my modern dryer does! Lol

Incidentally, my local radio station were doing a feature on old household items the other day, so I sent a text in about the Parnall, which got read out on air!

An update on the other Parnall that I thought may have been scrapped. It's re-listed and has bids on it (ending tonight), so it looks like it lives to fight another day! Hoorah!

I forget whether my last Ebay link worked or not, but here is the above listing...

have you bided or are you sitting it out?

If I had the space for another I'd have bid on it!

I see it went for £25 in the end. I hope its new owner enjoys it, and looks after it for many years to come!

A bit of an update on my dryer. It has had 5 minutes of 'fame' in the press!
It came about by my local radio station running a piece on a programe about old household appliances. I sent a text in, telling them about my old Parnall.
It so happened that a local newsagency was listening, and they asked the radio station to pass a message to me, telling me they were interested in my machine.
Anyway, a couple of papers ended up running a piece.
Unsurprisingly what I sent in and what was actually printed were totally different, so the text is the journalist's words and not mine!! The top photo of the two is the accurate bit!
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-...
I'm not sure how long the above link will stay 'live' for??

If the above isn't enough, there'll be a short piece on local TV at some stage. That piece is more accurate, being my own words, bar the fact they thought it better I say my drier is my daily user, which I went along with, if it meant my (our) hobby got a better chance of getting a little publicity!

And the article does not seem too bad overall, another close friend of mine recently featured in the Daily Mail and he told me how difficult it was to keep things on a factual basis with the journalists. You might find it gets picked up by other publications too. Do let us know if you do get a TV spot and there are others in this forum who can give you useful help and support if it comes off. You might find that you are getting all sorts of "vintage" stuff pushed your way too :)

It can be a bit of a double edged sword of course - it might prompt those who have been contemplating taking a piece of "junk" in the back of their garage or shed to the dump to check out where it might get another home, on the other hand they may be looking for a small fortune for what really IS a piece of junk.

A bit of interesting stuff written by that John Ericcson in the comments. Bollocks of course, but it would be interesting to know what it is based on.

Thanks Mike and Alistair, for your comments.
Meant to reply yesterday, but I ran out of time!

It did make the Mirror and Telegraph too.

Re the comments at the bottom of the article, great as many of the ones that I read were, there are a few very sad individuals out there, that's for sure! Lol

It is due to be shown on Meridian TV, on their nightly news programe (I don't know when), so I guess only those in the South will get to see it.
I don't think the interview was great, to be honest, and I will cringe when I see it, but I hope overall it has a positive effect on the hobby!

As for other vintage stuff being pushed my way, nice that that would be, I don't think I could cope with more than I already have! Lol
