I added another item to my "collection" today. I found this Maytag E2L wringer on Craigslist for a reasonable price. I went and looked at it and decided it needed to come home with me! It is VERY clean and only needs a minor amount of cosmetic work. I was especially attracted to the aluminum agitator and the thicker (appears to be about 1/4") aluminum tub.

Serial number.
Geoff Delp reports that this machine was "born" in June 1948.

I just passed up an E2L w/ an aluminum agitator at an estate sale this last Friday.  The asking price was $25.00.

What a nice find for you.  It looks show room new.  Ours that my folks bought was a 1950 with the red agitator.

"Pass the smelling salts" - this one is beautiful! One piece wringer post, cast aluminum tub (much heavier than the later spun tubs), original cord, and the original agitator is in wonderful shape! You did quite well Mark! Looking forward to seeing it sometime.

Ben

I am

in DISBELIEF !!!! You have the most beautiful, pristine, new looking N2L I have ever seen for its age. I am very happy for you for having found this gem. How on earth did you get it to shine like it does? Did you use the white rubbing compound and the polishing compound? Anyhow, I will never see another wringer as beautiful as yours. I use a N2L as a daily driver (which gets stained with each wash do to just plain old tide) and I thought it was in good condition for its age. It is really, but yours is just beyond belief. Happy times to you and your new baby. Best !!

Jim

Oops

I'm sorry, I got discombobulated looking at this gorgeous Maytag. It is an E2L not an N. I also have an E2L. Sorry :-(

Mark ... WONDERFUL! That sure is a beauty!! Such good condition, too. CONGRATULATIONS and many happy washings!!

BTW ... that is a weird design flaw with the wringer head. I tried it out on mine; it does the same thing. For some reason or another, Maytag didn't want Mrs. Homemaker to swing her wringer head over the tub with the lid open; only with it closed. Like I said, Maytag made a few changes at the end of the 1940's and then they basically made the same machine for 30+ years with minor cosmetic changes.

What kind of condition is the hose in? Even the hose was a little different on those models.

These machines are fun as they represent the post WWII BOOM!! Maytag couldn't keep up with the demand for these machines after WWII.

Wow that is in great condition, I never knew that they used a cast tub in this series I knew that the gray ghosts had them. When did they go to the stamped aluminum tubs in the E2Ls ? I would love to see a picture of the bottom of the tub.

Wasn't the color scheme on that wringer handsome? How the jeebers does something from 1948 look that good in 2011? I'm from 1946 and *I* sure don't look that good.

Scarcely any hardwater deposits. Like it was never used. That's impossible. Unless the owner washed in vinegar.

Clear something up for me. How well I remember the 'red button' on Maytags. My toy Ideal even had a decorative one. That's the motor switch, agitator clutch, or drain?

Notice on the label, it's spelled "gyratator"? I'd never seen it that way before.

Thanks for the pictures Mark, that is really cool to see an actual cast aluminum tub in one of these WWs, I never knew they had made this model that way. You have found a real rare machine that should be preserved.

MTs first AMP automatics did the same thing where the wash tub that held the water was one piece of cast aluminum and as yours does the bottom of the tub was the top of the transmission. I can see why they changed this design for many reasons pretty quickly as you couldn't just remove the transmission and replace it with a rebuilt one very easily. And if you had any serious corrosion around the agitator shaft the repair would be very expensive as you would be replacing the whole tub. Not to mention this was a much more expensive way to build the machine in the first place as they were using twice as much aluminum.

Does anyone in the club have one of the original AMs or AMPs with the aluminum tub? I have a 1950 AMP and it already has the the dark blue porcelain coated water container.

The red knob is the agitator activator. It's not really a clutch mechanism, but I suppose that term could be applied because it essentially does the same thing.

From June of 1948? It looks like it was barely used. There is no discoloration to that aluminum.
Envy.....
