Well i finally got to Leeds and collected the washer.Bought it from a nice young girl who lives the 1950s life but now has a baby and has given in to a more "modern" machine.
It was last used a year ago and apparently was working fine , now unfortunately the pump dosnt work.
I was hoping that it would just be jammed so took it off , the outer wheel that conects to the motor spins round fine and very freely but inside the pump the propelers of the pump only move occasionaly, almost as if the two are not conected but i presume they must be, i can see the propelers inside through the outlet pipe.
Obvious answer is to open up the pump and find out whats going on but its sealed with no obvious sign of how to get into the pump.
Its certainly not jammed as pumps often are.
Can anyone offer any advice? it would be very much appreciated.
By the way thats my garage and not my kitchen , just in case you thought poor bugger look at the state of that place.
Keith , if you read this the tub is blue enamel.
Thanks guys.
Lance

Hey Lance...Looks good condition !!
Ummm not familar with the EE pump, however I would have thought that it would have have been made to be opened up..Something tells me it has a one piece impellor fin which the impellor rod goes through, the rod maybe spinning but the impellor is loose.
Btw...what is that twinny behind the EE, is it a 3174 ?
Cheers
Keith

Impellor

Hi Keith , impellor that's the correct word not propellor , thanks.
What you said sounds exactly right but the pump seems to be totally sealed , there is some sort of cover with a gasket seal but absolutely no obvious way of opening it up.
Apart from that it seems to be in half decent condition.
The other washer in the photo is a hoovermatic, not sure of he model , the one with the timer on top not on the front.
It's showing it's age now but is still fantastic for boiling , gets a FULL tub of water to a rolling boil very quickly , I sprayed it cream to match my kitchen but it was relegated to the garage when I got my servis mark2.

Lance...

First of all, your garage is nice! My wash house is a similar theme. Your Hoovermatic is the first model, 3174 circa 1958. Your EE is lovely. I saw it on eBay. Hopefully the pump is repairable. There should be some way to open it for repair. If not then hacksaw time LOL???

James.

Lovely machine

Congratulations Lance, it looks great. Is that a thermometer on the front between the two lower switches? Going to have to make another trip up your way to see it in action :)

Is the pump electrically operated? If so, even if you can get the EE one fixed maybe alther can be adapted to fit, hope so

Al

By the way, Lance's garage might be good - the kitchen is lovely! And that supertwin fits in perfectly!

pump

Hi Lance,

lovely condition machine there, a few months back I got mine back from storage, it had had several problems, but to cut to the pump, the pump was quite free running but not pumping, but once i'd syphoned some hot water through it it started pumping as if by magic. I haven't opened up the pump on this one but it looks similar to the one on the front loader liberator, the pump cover is held on by a clamp with a central screw, a bit like a vintage pressure cooker. The impellor like many other vintage washer is made of rubber, so the vanes are flexible and of course these perish.

One other thing I've found with english electric products of the 50's and that includes the bendix bolt down washers that used english electric motors, is that the wiring within the motor is rubber sleaved and hence is often in a perished state, so even though it may work it may be quite dangerous to use, in fact my wash and rinse needs a complete rewire due to perished wiring. I've simply put a cable direct onto the motor just to see the wash action.

By the by mine is all white with a stainless steel tub, but the wringer is rusted and lost its front tray.

All the best with yours lance

Mathew

Nice machine Lance!!!

As for the pump, I haven't a clue, but there should be a way somehow.
Yes guys, I will second the comment on the kitchen, very very nice indeed! Lovely and warm and cosy. Actually, the garage is quite a nice space to work, some fab machines too!! Nice to see you put the "tap swirls" on! Lol.
Hope you get sorted with the pump soon. But I would suggest soaking it in very hot water yo make the impellor more flexable.

pump

Hi Guys , thanks for your comments.
Al, no its not electrical , a lever moves the position of the pump so it touches a spinning wheel on the main motor , all this works fine but it just dosnt pump water out. When you coming? Just say thge word.
Matthew thanks for your comments,
It dosnt have a clamp on it so im a bit bemused as to what to do.
The wiring all looks in good condition , infact the whole machine isnt bad at all.
Matthew when you get chance would you look inside your wringer for me, the metal bar which adjusts the tension, is it fastened into the tension adjustment handle with small clip or is it free and can be removed easily, mines lose but not sure if it should be.
I will try some hot water and see what happens.
Thanks boys for you advice.

Hi Lance,

Hope you manage to get the pump working, as regards to the tension bar in the wringer, I am sure it is loose on mine, do you mean the bowed metal bar that goes the lenght of the rollers and rests on the wooden blocks that the rollers go into..? the tension screw just goes straight into this.
Cheers Keith

Wringer and pump

Thanks Keith, in that case mine is assembled correctly.
Regards the pump, I live in a very farming orientated area and we have an amazing agricultural engineer in my village who can fix , make , or bodge anything. Took the pump to him and even he is bemused by it but at least he is going to have a go.
Fingers crossed eh!

pump

Hi i have 2 of thees washers the 405 and the 405a model the pump is driven by the main motor . in may case the axel on the impeller was brocken from the impeller the best way is to make a new one . make a mold in cast Gips in norway . use silicone or make a rubber filling by melting old tires and a sanitary and chemical silicone 30-by 70 % (smels so do out side) i have made 6 new and are working fine se my vid on youtube.erling and washers
