Let me start by saying I am new to this forum having only stumbled across it a few months ago after a google search for vintage appliances. It’s been interesting to say the least. I had no idea that vintage washers and dryers were even available let alone sought after and collected. Now after many hours examining the numerous photos of the fine old machines posted on this site, I suddenly find myself considering the purchase of a vintage set for myself. I guess I have all of you to blame---I mean thank for that. I hope you’re proud of yourselves. If you’re not you should be.
So here is the situation I’m in. I don’t currently have the space, nor will I ever have my wife’s permission for any kind of collection like some of you have managed to put together. I‘ll be able to get just one set, so it will need to be something that can be reliably used on a regular basis. Based on many of the comments I’ve read here I’ve been looking for older Maytags and have found an old gas model 502 dryer for sale. The guy wants $100 for it and I’m OK with the price though I’ll likely try to talk him down to $80. The problem is that it’s blue, and as most of the vintage Maytags that turn up seem to be white I’m worried that a matching blue washer will be very hard to find. I’m going out to look at it Monday morning and will take some pictures so you can see what condition it’s in. My question is basically this. If this dryer is in good condition as the seller claims it is, is the model 502 reliable enough for regular use? Are spare parts available for it? And finally, is a blue dryer likely to be as difficult to match up with a blue washer as I fear it is? Any help with this will be appreciated. Thanks to all. |

Here you can see the rust on the back panel. On closer inspection it appears to be mostly surface rust with some pitting. I also noticed what appear to be round knock out panels located high on the two sides near the back edge. Would I be correct in assuming that they're for running the vent out the sides instead of the rear?

The white upper portion of the instrument panel is flecked with two different substances. The dark flecks near the little gas logo clearly don't belong there. But the lighter colored flecks are found across the entire length with fairly uniform spacing. Are they supposed to be there or are they stains? I can't tell.

Nice turquoise Highlander, well worth what they're asking for it, as long as it does what it's supposed to do. The rust is typical, they use a standing pilot light. Knockouts are for different venting options.
Maytag Highlander washers are still out there to be found, but a turquoise one might be a bit scarce. Either purchase the dryer and enjoy it as is, or use it for trading material to get what you're after. It's also possible to find a matching washer in white, and have it painted. |

(in white, however), from the mid 1960s through the early 1980s. Ran very well, and only needed two minor repairs. The sensor dryness control was always spot-on. Lawrence/Mytagbear |

I have the mate to this (in 100 pieces right now), but it's white, not turquoise. Courage. The mate will come along. John LeFever (Combo 52) has a friend down in DC that had a brown one they were trying to sell a while back. That dryer is worth having although there are many people here who have had criticisms of the gas version HOH dryers. Had a chance to snag one in pink 4 years ago, but wasn't collecting yet. I love the design of that model with its phony dial. Its really an old version of the DG906, Does it have an interior light? |
