I spent the weekend in Beltsville with Great people who are in the process of restoring a 1955 kenmore washer (2 machines going t 1). I took snap shots and will go through the process as best as I can and as fast as I can! Please be patient I am not Mechanically inclined.
But hope you all enjoy.

That 55 was a free-gift-with-purchase from me to Ted when he came down for the 47 SQ I sold to him.  Glad it is in a good home!

Finally, the faces of two unseen friends.

Pete this is great! What a treat to see Ted and Gordon, and John looks like a giant standing in a tiny toy washtub. Thanks Pete.

Love the one of all four standing at attention like Colonels of the Kenmore.

EDIT: And now you've added yourself and Martin as I was writing WONDERFUL. How fun it must have been.

Great work! Identify some of these gentlemen, I think I recognize both Tim Macboi and Martin Yogitunes, they've both been phone-helpers to me on quite a few machines, nice guys with knowledge and helpful attitudes.
And keep the pictures coming, they are a valuable resource for other folks "machines in need."
You also have quite a variety of other machines to see in the pics, cool.

A Great Time

macboy91si's profile picture
I wish I had more time to spend with John and everyone up in Beltsville. I drove 18 hours or so over the weekend to make the trip and boy was I exhausted. It was very neat to get to know the belt drive machines a little better though and as always it was worth it. Gordon, Martin, Pete and Ted were all great company and we made progress on numerous machines. I honestly could have stayed.

Malcolm -

As can happen so very often with these older belt-drive machines, even with all mounting hardware removed, a part, especially the transmission or basket drive, does not want to come loose (this happens a lot too with the agitators). In this case, Ted was wrestling with the gearcase and it let-go suddenly, causing him to slam his left hand against the edge of the cabinet.

I have a number of those battle scars from older restorations myself, but they can put a damper on the fun!

Gordon

What love and admiration these pics show (plus a lot of hard work and damaged skin LOL). It is very evident that you were all in your glory helping this old gal to become usable again. My hat is off to you all !! Thanks for sharing.

It was a total blast.....to watch them wash is one thing...but to see them tore down to their basic shell, and then rebuilt from the ground up.....brings back memories of working in the shop as a teen......All of you guys were a world of knowledge....

Next time I am getting a hotel room and stay for the whole weekend....so much missed......also wanted to chat more, and hang out a little longer.....

sorry guys for getting sick, that was the last thing I wanted to happen....but made it home safe.......

hope we can do this again with another machine or two....maybe Gordons 518?

hands

Yep - I got my hand pretty good there - but the fun continued after a field dressing of napkins and painters tape.

Thanks to Peter H for hooking me up with one of those Kenmores - the other came from Mark H many years back and has been waiting patiently for some love.

John and Jeff are incredible - their experience is always mind-boggling!
Nothing stumps them and they work silently in tandem. I learned a lot.

It was also great to hang out with everyone while working on the machines - would have been nice to come back for a second day - there is never enough time when you are having fun!

I still have to sand and repaint the cabinet - hopefully, I can get that finished up in the next few weeks.

Standing at the Feet of Gods

LeFever times two is almost unbearable brilliance.  This is worth a million dollars as a video for all posterity.  What's even more incredible is that after a week's work they have chosen to teach/perform rebuilds on Whirlpool and Kenmore washers.  I can never really get my head around the sheer genius of these two gentle giants.  Purely amazing!

Did you ever wonder....
Watching you guys restore this beautiful example of engineering that withstood the test of time.....
That 50 years from now if there will be a group of guys restoring a "vintage" Samsung or LG?

I think not....

The Kenmore washer being restored in the pictures so reminds me of the Kenmore one my Grandmother had-loved to watch it during the summer while visiting her!She always had me go outside while it was going-but managed to sneak peaks anyway.Last I saw of that machine was in the early 70's.It still worked at that time.

Question for the experts....

Mom & Dad had a 1955 Frog-Eye Washer (w/Suds Saver) with a white & gold color back ground control panel yet the Frog-Eye Dryer had a black & gold back ground control panel, were they different model years?

Daily Use

Hi! WOW!!!! I wish I had all of that knowledge in one spot when I rebuilt mine.I did my 1955 2years ago and its my daily machine. Its really a good runner. The only trouble I had last year,I had to replace the starting capacitor on the motor. It started slowing down, put in a new one and presto she took off like a new one. Good luck,They are pretty when they are lit up at night. Best Regards Bobby,Oh by the way the black background on the dials was changed in 56 to white,The 55 desotos had black backgrounds on their gages in 55 and changed to white in 56 with the gold lettering on them also.

These are great pix, but you've got me, Mister! The shiny red 3 vane agitator in Reply # 120 I can't identify it. DANG IT. I hate being stumped by an agitator I can't identify it. And thanks for the intense close-up of Ted. Have had so many friendly conversations with him, always wondered what he looked like. Unforgettable!

That RED agitator, although rare, is for a Speed Queen wringer.....usually their either gray or white....

I meant to grab one from the loft and compare the automatic with the wringer as far as inter-changeable....

EXPLANATIONS OF WHAT WE WERE DOING

combo52's profile picture

Sorry I have been so busy I have not had a chance to add any captions for all the pictures that Peter took and posted, so here is a partial list.

1 Teds 1955 donner machine.

2 Teds 1956 KM Cycla-Fabric machine to be restored. And Ted pondering restoration process.

3 First group of participants Ted, Myself [ John Combo-52 ], Gordon KM 64, and my brother Jeff of Jeff Adelphi.

24 Me trying to loosen the heated BLR as the eternal flame burns on.

26 Heating a 2nd time to try again.

30 It finely loosens comes loose as Ted holds on.

REBUILDING CONTINUES

combo52's profile picture

And Tim we are still waiting for your pictures. We are on to the super capacity models with the long center posts. Both are badly enough rusted that Smitty has gotten some real aircraft grade SS tubing that just fits over the outside o the center post that will be welded in place. This will provide extra strength and eliminate any chance of future corrosion damage. We will probably start another thread with pictures.
