I decided to start another thread for some help/suggestions pertaining to the ABC. The other thread Chuck will post some pics/vid from yesterday. And we can give updates of progress.

My question is...How easy is it to remove the top deck to get to the inner tub? How do you do it. I now have water leaking down the center shaft.

Much thanks far any help so that I don't ruin anything :-)

Rich

I think that the top removal might be easy but I'm having a very hard time removing the dial. Anyone have any suggestions about removing it. I have sprayed a little WD40 but that's about it. I dont want to force it causing breakage.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Rich

Hey Rich,

I didn't see this post till now. Is it possible to remove the rod at the timer vs. at the dial? If it is frozen at the dial removing it from the timer might be your next option. I haven't worked on an early one so I'm going with hunch at this point.

The early cabinet is quite a bit different from the later cabinets. Are those retaining screws around the parameter? If you get the timer dial freed from the timer itself hopefully there is a screw underneath which will allow access to all four screws.

The dial is held onto the shaft via a set screw that needs to be loosed first. But Ben is also correct you can remove the dial from the bottom via the shaft on the timer, I believe it is held on with a cotter pin.

Thanks guys!

I didn't even think about that. As soon as I have some free time I'll check it out!! Will the top come off freely once I remove the dial? I'm betting it will.

Again, Thanks :-)

OK!!! I'm stumped :-)

I took out the three cotter pins to release the shaft so that it can be raised up but something is keeping it from comming out all the way.

I am trying to take off the top and I can get all three corners to release but I can't seem to get the corner by the dial to come up at all. There is a lot of rust under the top plate where it meets the body so I've sprayed it with WD-40 and am calling it a night! Is there any reason that corner will not release or is it just rust? I have already caused a small chip of enamel to pop off by the dial and I don't want to cause any more damage. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!!

Rich

Some progress made

I was able to get the dial/shaft out. Seems that some corrosion was keeping it from just sliding out. Now I have removed a little rubber boot that is under the dial and what did I discover? A large nut! This is what I think is heeping the top down on that corner. Problem? I can't seem to get that nut loose. It seems to be screwed onto a tube that the shaft goes down into. I have WD-40 it and will wait. I just am hoping that someone can give me some insight on what I can expect or some possible handy tips!

Thanks,
Rich

I will check what doctrine I have tonight

but as I remember , the nut screws down onto the timer shaft tube, which is made out of POT METAL and is brittle. SO don't force it. I would run to HOMO DEPOT and buy RUST BLASTER and spray liberally for a week around the nut before trying it. If you break the shaft tube you will loose the water seal from the outer cabinet. If it doesn't free up then I would carefully cut the nut off the shaft.

just my two cents and I did this and had to have a new shaft made.

Thank you, Jon!!!

I wouldn't have guessed that the tube was pot metal! I have worked with pot metal before and it can be so fragile. Made more so by the use of oil to lubricate. Having collected and worked on MANY old phonographs I soon learned the pitfalls of pot metal. I have started by using WD-40. Would you suggest that I change to RUST BLASTER?

I will proceed with caution.

Thanks, Peter. I saw this ad on eBay. Very cute!! :-)
