This is a ad I found on ebay from 1977. I could tell the DW is D&M but I don't know what the rest are? Can anyone shed some light? I never heard of Edison appliances before.

EDISON APPLIANCES

Thats all Modern Maid junk, McGraw Edison made MM appliances, I love the part about having over 2000 factory service technicians, they hardly sold that many appliances per quarter year, but I guess they knew thier reliability LOL.

Good one, John! Modern Maid was so cheap it rattled in a still kitchen.

I suspect that most of McGraw Edison's profit came from their production of Sears dishwashers. Modern Maid Dishwashers were badged Kenmore (and of course a roto-rack was added).

I believe it was the early seventies when Sears changed to Whirlpool for their dishwasher supplier. Maybe this is what promted McGraw-Edison to get out of the major appliance business.

Sears!

Barry it wasnt until the mid 80's when Sears started to use Whirlpool as their dishwasher designs. Actually they were also doing D & M until the mid 90's - both at the same time. The Modern Maid was much like Kenmore D & M but Sears used more bells and whistles.

Thanks, Peter. When you say D&M, that was the name of the manufacturing firm before McGraw-Edison bought them out, correct?

D & M

...was Design Manufacture (/Manufacturing), and they were independent until White Consolidated (WCI) acquired them in 1986 or so.

Thanks for the background information. I don't see the references to McGraw-Edison, which made Modern Maid, Sears (DW), Edison, etc. Somewhere between D&M and WCI McGraw Edison was there.

My parents had a 1968 Modern Maid dishwasher and it had McGraw-Edison, as the manufacturer, on the name/model plate.

D&M

D&M was never affiliated with McGraw other than making dishwashers with their name on them, as well as for Sears, etc.
Other than the Modern Maid Div, which was independent in the 60's & 70's, I think Mc Graw made mostly large appliance parts, like motors. And disposers.

I saw a 4 quart slow cooker last Saturday at a sale that was branded "Edison" so the name is still floating around...

Chattanooga was home

to Modern Maid in the 1960's.
My 1962 BH&G Kitchen Ideas says:
"Modern Maid - a product of Tennessee Stove Works, Chattanooga 1, Tennessee".

Mostly built-ins, and the tiny picture of the dishwasher looks definitely like a D&M of the day.
