The first is a bargain

For $50.00, you get a machine that will likely out-last a modern HE front loader. The other $850.00 gets to stay in your wallet: Buy some gas, buy LOTS of steak, upgrade the computer, pay some bills, fix the car. Or, save it for a rainy day. Old top loaders have their advantages!

Finances

They really put the breaks to any new projects. I haven't been able to buy enough groceries, let alone work on or start any projects. I still have the collection, though. The belt-drive Whirlpool portable needs a new motor, or possibly a capacitor. Not sure, all I know is that the lint filter got stopped up, and there went the engine. Lesson learned: Keep an eye on that lint filter when using, it's right over the motor!

Good to see you here again, Yogitunes.

Thomas

YES HE WOULD!

That machine is on my dream list. It matches a dryer my Mom got in 1972.

I had the remants of one in my trailer that was one of the first of two washers that I bought to use as practice machines when I started working on them. I sold the other machine in working condition, but the one I had was Avocado. I have a panel from it still, but it's no nicer.

I have only come across one of these for sale since getting back into these in 2008, and I was too late - sold on Craigslist. I had a chance to get a good gold one back when I bought my sister's Kenmore in 1989, but I haven't seen many of these overall.

LOVE those big timer knobs.

Gordon

Here's a pic of the machine I missed on Craigslist. LOVE love this panel, not sure why, but I do. We had a matching dryer, 1972-1983 before we moved to Charlotte.

The model pictured here and the white one too are 60-series machines. They were available with and without bleach dispensers as two different stock models.

A bit higher in the line was this pair, which added a Pre-Soak cycle. Pardon the quality of the Craigslist photo. These were offered either free or cheap and I missed those as well. I think this panel might be even more attractive.

There was a large capacity 1973 version of this washer that I've never seen but in catalogs.

Frigidaire!

Wow, the DC ad has a *RUSTY* Pink 1959 Frigidaire Imperial dryer next to the Whirlpool washer.

That would be a cool dryer to play with (non-condensing air flow).
