The next machine I'm hoping to find is a "Burpilator" Norge. Can someone describe the overall era of Burpilators, what other badges the Norge wore, so I know what to look for? Usually the most recent builds are easiest to find, and I believe that Montgomery Wards "Signature" was the most common badge on Norge besides their own, but I don't know much else besides that. And what exactly was the burped water supposed to do?

i think "burpilator"norges were made up through around '85,maybe '88.I saw a
crosley branded norge washer once(Ca.1990 vintage)but it was post-burpilator,had
a vinyl coated steel tub instead of porcelain coated.
The water burped up through the agitator is strained through a filter pan when the
pan is in place on the agitator post.

The one I had was made in 1988. It seems the most common variety to be found is the Wards version. There were plenty sold and many still around. I just posted a video on the 'Noisiest washer' thread that shows the burping agitator and filter working...

I want a burpilator!!!!!!

IT seems that various years included a lint filter at the spout, other years used the burped water through an agi-mounted filter. And the partial drain followed by immediate spray rinsing is relatively unique, there's still lots of soapy water in the tub. Any way it works, I'm hoping a Norge is my next find.

There was a MW store in a nearby large suburb until about 2000, I should concentrate at estate sales in that area I guess.

Besides Norge and Montgomery Wards Signature, what other major badges did the Norge wear? Were almost all full sized Signature models of the 60's to 80's made by Norge, with the burp and the brake?

Thanks

Mark

The burpalators I've seen are either Norge- or Montgomery Ward-branded.  The key is to look for holes on the agitator skirt in front of the vanes; this is where the pressure wave of the stroke of the agitator pushes water into the intake for the pipes that run up the sides of the agitator.

Later models will have similar looking agitators, but no holes.

While the Admiral and some other machines shared mechanicals, I don't think I've ever seen a burpilator of that ilk.

Gambles - Coronado (pic #65 in the Aberdeen farm pics) also looks to be around the time of the Kelvi branded Norge. Perhaps there was a snag in the WCI takeover of Franklin/GSM around this same time.

I also seem to remember Norge-made appliances under a few other store names

Didn't Hotpoint have a burp-a-lator style agitator at one time late 60s/early 70s? Couldn't resist posting a pic of my Wards burp-a-lator! (need to take a new photo -- this was before I cleaned her up!)

Question for you Todd: at 12 o'clock is the water fill, then at 3:30 - 4 o'clock is the discharge for the detergent dispenser, what is that at the 8 o'clock position?

Thanks!

Kevin

P.S... I definately prefer the styling of these older Wards machines compared to the newer one I have!

When did the Signature machines begin incorporating Norge's agitator-mounted filter pan?  My mom's '67 had a rear-mounted filter tray below the fill flume.

Norge/Wards burp up filters

Hey Ralph! It seems Norge/Wards went back and forth with their filter designs. My machine is from 1969, and it too had the detachable tray at the rear. Darrel sent me a "burpilator" so for awhile I used both filters. I had two trays, so I cut one down so I could use both at once. I found the burp up filter catches more lint, just because the holes in the detachable tray filter are too large to catch much lint. Now I only use the burplilator, and it does a good job. Still it is nice to have the fountain running too. I really love this machine!

Hotpoint..

Called theres the Fountain Filter or something like that, it was much more complicated, it pumped water on the forward and the backward stroke, the agitator was a big turquoise thing, looked somewhat like an Easy Spiralator...The problem with it was, you had to take the agitator apart ever so often and clean the inner workings or it clogged up, the Norge never gave much trouble as it was simpler in design.

More Burps

gansky1 was right on the money with the brands. I looked for these washers in my business. This machine had several brand names. Western Auto, Firestone, Pencrest(?). They were HUGE and people liked them. The outer tub was thin and often rusted out. I would fill the holes with JB Weld. Often, I replaced the tub seal, and sometimes they needed a pump. The other big repair was the spin bearings (if I remember right, it was a standard bearings and not a special size) I don't ever remember having one with a bad transmission. I had to warn buyers that the brake was noisy (open one while it is spinning- it sounds like a rifle shot! BANG!). Due to the thin outer tub, I warned people not to use strong alkali detergents like Tide in these machines. At the time, the parts were not expensive, and they were easy to repair. My customers were pleased with how long they lasted.

Kevin: the 8:00 position is the bleach dispenser.

I remember my grandma's '62 Wards Signature washer had the burp-a-lator system: bakelite base with a white agitator column and white filter pan with the bakelite top like my '64 Norge. The '64 I have below is the type with the rear-mounted pump filter -- I'm still seeking a filter pan for it if anyone has any leads..!

I'm guessing early 1980s or later 1970s, since it has the visible fill spout. This one may be either TOL or close to it. I pulled out the bleach dispenser drawer for this shot. I have the lint filter pan, but it's in bad shape and needs to be replaced. Barring replacement, you may be able to get very creative with 2-part epoxy. I also have the FS dispenser that sits atop the filter pan.

At this point, my camera's battery died. I can email these pics in MUCH larger versions if anyone wants. The more I see this washer, the more and more I like it. I'd love to keep it, but I've got too many projects already, so I'd be glad for this one to go to a place where it could be put in service again. I'd rather have a Montgomery Norge like my mother had, circa 1981, and more MOL.

I've never plugged it in or put water in it. When I got it, I was told it may need a motor (I may have one in my parts stash). I was also told some bearings were going out. I don't know if this means some sort of spin bearing or inside the transmission. Like I said, I've never tested this one or even looked at it much.

I'd love to see this one running again,
Dave

Iv'e Been trying to get to this thread Forever and a day...

I have some nice videos when I was on my summers AW trip .

I had such a melt down in my life that it's taking awhile to get back on track.

And there is still much more to do to get back on track.

That being said, I want to thank all of the people I meet in the mid-west this summer and in Canada I had a BLAST !

OOk ...

My first encounter with a Burbulation Norge Machine was in the early seventies 8 or 9 yrs old.

My grandmother on my dad's side Viola was her name, which I called Mama took me too North Carolina.

Where I first meet my Aint and my cousins,  Now this was a nice little home with a red dirt road.

All I can remember was that they was fascinated that I was fascinated about that washer that was in the kitchen.

Sooo my aint who was a happy women and her two older daughters put up a chair in front of this lit washer....

and let me stare at this machine.

I never had a reception like that ever ...

But this Norge had a RED Burbulator agitator and I never seen one since.

She said I can watch all I want , but put that lid down when it spins.

I did do that ...but I would peak when spraying an I got Soaked ! lol.

Anyway that washer was so much fun from the other machines I was use too like Kenmore & Whirlpool.

The sound ..Like a Bees nest swirming around when washing and the long cost down from spinspray rinsing, was all new to me....That's why I got soaked with water lol.

Mark I'm glad that Todd has a real jewal for you and I hope that it works out well.

I never seen that model , and the Peace sign is so NEAT .

Peace my brother....my parents where Black hippies we had white & black and other in our house all the time...

That's why I never understood racism my parents never talked in a negative fashion about other races in my house.

And I'm a better person for it today.

Sock -It- To me man get that MACHINE Running !

Rick...I love your Norge I looked at it on the tube forever and a day as well as that whirlpool..

The control panel is just great, makes one happy.

Todd M...The machine you have is almost identacal to my other family member rows of buttons ..

but with a lighted dial in green & white, your dial must have that small clicking sound that Ben talks about in his video.

Love that dial.

Mr. Kevin ...You have a nice new on in your collection now ..WHAT'S NEXT lol

Drew always finds or gets the nicest machines...I beleave Jamie our his aunt has the same one it's in a video.

So I went In our Archives To get the one that started it all...

I call him Old Grandpa ...

Robert's machine ...Louis does not like this one as much thats funny he is A loud one and at times....Quit.

Malcolm said it that Norge machines are very industral sounding VERY strong motor.

I never understood the drag washing technique ...but yaa it's the water that cleans maybe a little more wear ?

Here is the Agitator on the Roof with holes. Number 5. Norge Burbulator.

Can you name the rest...

Now about that Hotpoint I came upon that one in the 70's as well.

Beautiful Agitator someone called it here THE MOST ORGANIC looking .

I like that agitator it was the end of a real Hotpoint.

But the action from there scoop and throw was much gentler then a Burp Agi.

So while visiting Mike in Peoria Illinois He was so gracious to rent a car and explore the mid west.
First I saw Todd in Quad city for a hot moment more on Todd's( Volvoguy ) story later.
Then straght to Robert's and Freds home.
And what a great TIME what a nice soooo much fun of a person Mr. Seger is.
As well as Fred they made me feel so at home..if not better thanks guys.

I got to run old Grandpa I just have a spot in my heart for the machine.
It Truly is a HOG , PIG , Bee Swirming sounding machine.
Every washer I used has just about the same laundry in it.
My clothes.

So more of the washers I post you will see the theme of them.
This was the last washer I used at Robert's more on his story later as well.
There is no way of using all of them in a two day stay lol.
TO MANY !

So late night washing ...
This starts off with a Picture I made for him then Grandpa.
WASH>
Half and half wash load...
Half of Robert's play clothes for wash in's...
Half of my soiled laundry with Vintage Original Tide.
Topping off with Original vintage Downy.
Wow I Still smell it.
I also ask Robert to change out the original Agitator for the Burp model.

Watching those Norge video clips made me feel like a child again watching my Moms Norge. The sights and sounds.I think the Norge agitator cap was meant to be more functional than attractive.Note how it would be easy to grip with your fingers to remove it.vaguely remember both Dad & Mom removing the cap to get under the agitator for cleaning and maintenance. The Burpulator brought back basement memories!and hers had the shiney metal lint dish.Would love to run into one of these neat machines someday.I don't remember what sort of dial Moms had.Does the Norge in the video clip have the loud slammy brake that sounded like a shotgun going off when it engaged-that sound used to make me jump out of my skin until I knew it was going to brake after spinning.I think it used the brake after the final spin-sort of remember the machine filling for rinse as it coasted down to a stop. And the pumpout of the water when the machine goes to spin!they had some strong motors back then!

the videos are great, the rinse water is so clear you can see everything--your underwear, hahah--, and the water hitting the massive agitator during the spray rinse gives a wonderful fireworks display of water.

For all Burpolator people: Even the earliest Norge Agi had holes in the bottom; and even though it didn't burp, it sure could spit from the slits in its sides

You know, I was doing a load of laundry in my Wards Signature washer and think that the burpilator filter must be the most effective lint removal system of all the vintage machines. It seem's "purer" because the water isn't drawn thru the tub holes and into a pump and back into a lint filter-- the agitator is right in the linty water with larger holes than the perforated tub holes, so can draw lintier water that if it gets sucked thru the tub...any thoughts on this?

Granny had what I believe was a late '50's or early '60's Norge. I think it was a post timeline machine. I have only seen one other machine like it and that was at a thrift store around 1970.

This Norge had a small box on the right hand side of the deck that held a rotary timer (not a full width panel), the burpilator nozzle shot straight up like a fountain, the filter pan was aluminum, and the machine featured a 'Super Rinse' rubber inlet nozzle at 12 o'clock. This, of course, was a solid tub machine that had that noisy pump and I don't think it had a clutch--it seems as though the motor started slowly against full load when spinning; I vividly remember all the lights in the basement dimming severely and the motor laboring until tub came up to speed. Wow.

Any information that can be shed about this particular machine would be greatly appreciated.

Hotpoint:

Further to the above threads: in or about 1990, I scored a NOS 1967 Penncrest solid tub washer after a local JC Penny's store was demolished. It turns out that this is a MOL genuine Hotpoint with a spiral agitator and fountain filter. It has been my daily for the last 21 years. Note that I have never had the agitator's filter pump clog and the burpilator filter does an amazing job--seems every bit as effective as the Filter Flo it replaced, not to mention it's a substantially quieter machine.

Super Rinse

Spinout, it was definitely a Norge or Wards/Signature -- my grandma's Wards had the "Super Rinse" spelled out on the 12 o'clock position fill nozzle...but her's had the traditional burpilator agitator.

Hey Joseph (Spinout) could you post some pictures, or better yet videos, of your Pencrest/Hotpoint? These are my dream machines. I've only seen one in operation and that was way back in the 70's.

More to the point.

Just this afternoon, Mr. Akronman dropped into Cincinnati for lunch and picked up my 50th Anniversary Norge Burpalator, pictured above. I was very sad to see it go as I really wanted a Burpalator, but I'd rather have one like my mother's 1981? MOL-ish Wards. I could hardly imagine it going to a nicer home. Mr. Arkonman is a gentleman and I think the Norge should be very happy in his care.

Here's a pic of the exchange. I'm the one on the right, Akronman is on the left, and the Norge is in the middle.
Dave

PS: This proves that you can move washers in a compact car!

IT's home! The Norge is waiting in the garage overnight for my boyfriend to help me in the morning with getting it down those basement steps, always a hassle. It looks like a great machine, pretty darn well-cared for, robust.

Dave and I had a fun time, I got my first ever taste of delicious and famous Cincinnatti Chili, I got a tour of his basement too. He's a Maytag dryer expert, and rapidly turning in to a Kenmore washer expert, lots of great vintage machines working, some in repair/restoration, pieces parts all around for a bunch of projects. Dave and his roommate are also restoring their late 1800's home, it already looks nearly marvelous and his future work will shine. IT's a BIG house, 20 years older than mine.

I'll start a new thread in a few days, once I've started checking out this machine's needs, and I'll post pics for sure.

Again--thanks to Dave Volvoguy for a good day, a neighborly visit from one corner of Ohio to the other! He's very easy to talk to, full of information, and a kind soul.

My only complaint---------why does my new washer have to wait overnight in my garage!!!! I want that Burpilator action NOW.

Did Norge use the word BURPILATOR, or is that strictly an AW.org phrase?

Mark, looks like a great time was had by all.....wonderful to meet members and have some fun.....

don't tell me about "temptation" of getting a machine, and to get it into the house, hooked up and running....most times I strip down naked just to have a quick load....a seriously learned to close the shades, been there, done that!

I would be awake all night if I had to wait until morning.......wake up the BF and move it now!(just advance the clock to 5AM, he'll never know!)
