So some of you might remember this thread from last month.  I had been alerted to this Craigslist ad a few days before a thread was posted about it here on aw.  The washer was located in San Diego and was actually posted on San Diego Craigslist back in the summer of 2010.  I couldn't help but to notice that even though only one picture was shown in the ad, the machine looked just mint.  So last year I emailed the seller inquiring about the machine and he never responded so I didn't follow up.  Over a year later the machine shows up on CL again.  I emailed the seller and asked him if I immedately Paypal'd him the cash for the machine could I send a shipper out to pick it up?  His five word response was "NO, BUY A WASHER LOCALLY".  So then I email him again, explaning what I do as a collector and sent him a few pictures of our basement asking him again if I could buy it, this time there was no response what so ever.

So after thinking about it for a week and not giving up so easily, I emailed Kevin (revvinkevin) in LA and asked if he would mind going to pick it up for me and I would have it shipped from his house.  Kevin so very kindly went down to San Diego and picked up the machine, THANK YOU AGAIN KEVIN, and we got it shipped.

So the machine arrives, at first it has major timer issues.  I would only spin, not fill or agitate unless I giggled the timer just right in a few spots.  So I took the timer apart and soldered back down a loose contact.  The machine worked great then for about three wash loads when the motor started to give out.  I thought the motor was bad and posted a thread about it.  I tried to fit a motor from a mid 60s Kelvinator washer, but it was just a hair too big.  So back to troubleshooting, I noticed that if I didn't tighten the motor mounting bolts all the way down, the motor worked just fine, although noisy with the bolts loose and rattling.  As soon as I figured that out I realized that the motor is not the issue.  So in examining the motor/transmission coupling I realized it was changed in a later repair not using proper Easy parts.  The make-shift coupler was a bit too large and when you tightened the motor mounting bolts properly it put inward pressure on the driven member of the transmission causing it to bind at times.  So I trimmed the coupler down a bit and was able to tighten the bolts without any extra pressure which seems to have solved the problem.  How I managed to get through three or four wash loads at first without it acting up is a mystery to me.

The machine is absolutely low-use MINT to say the least.

Here are some initial pictures, I will take more over the lunch hour...

Just gorgeous!  Its a bottom of the line 1964 model, Easy made five models at this time.  This machine was still made by Easy, it wasn't for another couple of years before Easy stopped making their own washers and sourced them from Hotpoint.

It's beautiful. Just look at that Spiralator shimmer. Can't get over how much, in the close-up of the controls, it looks like a tower Unimatic. And I real like the drain holes so far up on the very top of the tub. the spin must be exciting to watch, and I hope you'll show us.

You were right when you said I'd really like it. I love it and am white and silver with envy. And it's great that Kevin rescued it from the refusenik.

That's a Thor badged Bendix Powersurge.

Do you still have the 1962 Easy?

Yes, but that machine not nearly in as good of shape as this machine.  The new machine runs so much smoother and quieter.

I take it this is a time fill machine?

Actually Lawrence its not, when the tub is full water overflows into the outer tub which trips a water level sensor.

Mike the Agitator is made out of bakelite.

And I'm glad (certainly by no means surprised) you figured out the motor issue.  Sometimes walking away from and coming back to a perplexing issue with renewed resolve and a different perspective is all that's required.

Kevin, you are to be commended for your key contribution to this cause!

Nate, even though Robert had already been alerted to the CL ad, your post provided an oblique clue regarding the mystery motor!

I wonder if the bad repair was an issue and actually preserved this machine over the decades.

Great collectible. Other than ads I never thought I'd see an Easy automatic.

Except the "Westinghouse" toploader mom bought when she got disgusted with the potato-pulley FL breaking down. I could have sworn it had a perforated tub, but honestly I didn't spend that much time at home after 1964.

Great find and great save. You make so many of the rest of us green with envy!! I'm glad you explained the Easy/Hotpoint relationship. The only Easy automatic I've ever seen was a Hotpoint clone. I knew there was a connection there so now I understand. I love the way appliance makers once put personality into their machines instead of trying to make everything look the same as the competition. I also like how they used to be proud of their machines and displayed the name in BIG, BOLD letters. Now, you need bifocals to see the appliance makers name and brand A looks just like brand B. Can't wait for videos.

"Fine" is the way they describe the delicate cycle. I'll post the cycle chart below

I'd love to see the shot of the mechanicals sometime Robert. Is this a version of a Beam design Fluid Drive?

I'll post some soon, Easy started out as a Beam machine, then in '59 they designed their own direct drive transmission called the "Velvapower".  They made these until 1966 when Hotpoint started producing the Easy line.

This machine is the rare "Velvapower" type.

Hi Robert - thanks for posting. From looking at the chart can I assume that even though the timer dial says up to 6 minutes for a wash it will give it a 10 minute wash? Also I assume being it is a solid tub is it timed fill? Does it also do a overflow rinse?
Thanks Peter

No overflow rinse but it has a long strong spray rinse and its NOT a time fill machine.  Water overflows into the outer tub when the tub is full and trips a water sensor to start agitation.  Since the machine does not pump out during agitation this design cannot support an overflow rinse.

Pete you can get 10 full minutes of wash by setting the dial at the beginning of the Regular cycle.

I like the way

mickeyd's profile picture

it spins for 2 minutes before the sprays start, and then it goes right to the rise fill, kinda like a 1-18. And Boy! that Fine cycle is only 10 minutes. Interesting chart.

Malcom & Pete if you look at the pics of the older machine linked in Robert's post--click on "that Machine" in post #19-- the circulation is present during the rinse, but no overflow, unless my perception is off.

Gregm had another Easy automatic, and I think it was another 1962 model with the "pull the ring" timer. It too had some sort of problem, motor or pump, I cannot recall. Does anyone know what became of the machine Gregm had, after he broke up his collection? Hopefully someone has it somewhere. I remember it was a nice looking machine.

As promised here is a video of the Easy showing the some of the inital fill, part of the wash and the entire 3 min rinse spin and spin rinse.

The video quality is just fair as I found it really hard to get the lighting right with a mirror chrome agitator cap and black agitator.  Not to mention our hot water is super hot so its really steamy.  Like our brand new sheets, lol?

Robert, it is a keeper, no lollygagging either, the Easy goes about it's business quickly.  The new sheets are great.  Thanx for the vid.  alr2903

Now THATS a nice DD washer!!!-Love the SH---SLURP of the agitation-the SH---SLURPILATOR!The ramp bladed agitator of that washer is VERY effective.Would have to figure the EASY TT machines have the same action. The agitation of that machine is just at the right speed and stroke length. Now if the KN-WP ones were like that.Like the Easy action as opposed to the blender action of the KN-WP DD machines.

I can see why GE made their agitators spiraled in the last days of the Filter Flo.

It truly is a superior design IMHO. It's what all top loaders should have had to begin with. I mean, wow.. Look at that clothing move... Everything in the tub just gets SUCKED towards the agitator then moved out again.

It's a shame nobody makes top loaders with this style of agitator anymore.

I recall seeing a video of a Speed Queen washer with one of these style of agitators, it was nearly destroying the clothes it was so awesome.

Fantastic find Unimatic! I hope this machine gives you years of service.

Now that is a smooth and very quiet machine, that spray rinse sure looks effective...is the programme sequence, wash, spin drain, spray rinse & then 1 deep rinse & final spin??

How do you rate this machine in your lineup?? above the GE etc..

Cheers, Mike

I wonder if the KN-WP DD machines would have been better if they used the Roto-Swirl in them?Seems to me the Ramp agitator is firm and gentle-rather than the Dual action style agitators.do like the action of the ramps-the Suck down on one stroke-than the push up on the other.

Which GE Mike, the early AW6 models, no that still is a better performer, the early V12 machines I would say this would be about the same.

is the programme sequence, wash, spin drain, spray rinse & then 1 deep rinse & final spin??
Exactly Mike.

My EASY has the 8 spray rinses. When did they start with the 8??
Geoff they didn't, all bottom of the line machines have a three minute first spin with the last minute preforming a spray rinse. All machines above the BOL machine have a 4 minute first spin, with 8 five seconds intermittent spray rinses.

Interesting that

mickeyd's profile picture

the BOL gives you a full minute while the higher ups only a measly 40 seconds. ;-) Until today, I'd have bet the farm that the Maytag full minute spray, directly on the clothes and into--not out of-- the tub has been the best in the land, over the long haul, excluding the briefly appearing 1-18. But the BOL Easy's uninterrupted spray kicks everybody's butt, hands down, in my humble opinion.

Thanks for posting the video, Robert. I like how quiet and smooth the operation is during wash and spin. How fast is the spin speed? Looked to be pretty good. Did the entire basement get spray rinsed, LOL?

I also like the timer advancement. Too cool!
Another great addition!

That spin spray reminds me of the Easy twin tub and the spray rinse it did/does.  Do the clothes after the final spin come out as dry as they do from the twin tub?

The Easy is wonderfully quiet, quite different than my other Easy. I thought I better check the oil level and quality in the transmission. It has both a separate access oil drain and oil fill plugs. There is suppose to be 52oz of oil in the Velvapower transmission. It turns out the '64 had only 6oz left and I then went and checked my earlier louder '63 Easy. There was not a drop of oil left in earlier Easy. Certainly explains why its so much louder. So I filled both with fresh oil. The '64 Easy is amazingly quiet now, as quiet as a properly tuned Unimatic or Pulsamatic. The louder '62 Easy is quieter now, but running all those years without oil definitely took its toll.

And by way, here is the spec sheet for the '64 Easy... Check out the spin speed!!! Not bad.

I am glad you got this machine running properly, can't wait to see it in action sometime. This is another machine that I never got to work on or even ever see running. In the early years I did throw a WH verison and an Easy away.

And remember all you EVP owners CHECK YOU OIL every 5 years of use or if your machine sounds louder than usual LOL.

Robert, it's beautiful, and the condensation from the hot water and the shiny agitator cap give it a dream-like quality! Love the spin-spray rinse -- rivals that of the one-minute Norge spin-spray! Thank you for a great video.

HI Robert

Love those Easy machines. I have an Easy spindrier from around 1964 I would think? Does the spindrier machines require oil too, that would be the same that the automatics did of that period? Thanks, Gary

Mine is still sitting in the garage because I'm afraid to use it. Parts are so scarce and couplers are so un-available. When I move to my big house in Wallingford I may very well give it to an AW.org member. I love this machine dearly but my new laundry room can only hold 3. My Whirlpool Gold, Kitchen Aid Superba, and my Maytag A207. I'm giving my Whirlpool LFA-5800 to my neighbor, and the EASY is the only one left. I'll let you all know when my EASY goes up for grabs. I want it to go to a loving home :) For free!!!

I hear ya, Geoff, I get worried sometimes about locating parts in the future for our machines and treat mine very gently -- imagine what it'll be like in just 10 or 20 years. Yikes, we'll be thinking this junk they're making now is "vintage!?"
