Here Is the Kenmore set I adopted over the weekend. They were given to me by fellow AW memeber ril70sman. He is the first member I've met in person.
Thank you Rob for holding these for me and it was nice meeting you.
Nick.

Are those avocado green? Not that I'm color-blind, just a little hard to tell...

Very Nice Kenmore pair...

I love the color avocodo with the white tub cap and gray basket.

Light gray baskets in kenmores are interesting cross between white and a shade of dark.

Makes it clean looking...With the white Roto-Swirl.

I have a avocodo Kenmore large capacity same gray tub with a Penta-Swirl Agi.

It's at my dads and it will stay there for awhile until I'm ready for it.

Good luck on the pair !

And your in the best place here, and you will find so many nice & interesting people at this site.

How about a video ?

KENMORE WASHER-DRYER PAIR

combo52's profile picture

Congratulations on your new Fresh Avocado pair. This is the new non-shaded avocado color that will match any other avocado appliances made in the US till the end of this color by the mid 1980s. The pair are nice and clean but certainly have seen a lot of use as one can see by how worn the snubber-pad is on the washer and the worn finish on the dryer drum. While the washer is a standard capacity 18 gallon tub the dryer is the extra large one. In fact I believe that this dryer is larger than any dryer built today by WP or any other company for that matter. This dryer is a great performing machine that will dry huge loads and leave them in very wrinkle free condition. Enjoy them and let me know if you need any parts for either, John.

I did the cleaning!

When I acquired these, they were clean on the outside, but the insides were quite dirty after 33 years of use. I spent the most time cleaning the washer. I also give it new inlet valve hose clamps and new tub ring clamps since the originals were beginning to disintegrate. I then touched up most of the major exterior scratches with avocado touch-up paint from Whirlpool.

The dryer needed a new drum belt, which I changed, and a good vacuuming. I did not get around to replacing the broken door latch, though. The bulk head gasket might need to be changed in the near future, but the drum belt pulleys seemed okay.

Nick, keep us posted on the progress of the overhaul when you decide to do it.

Rob

So please pardon me if this has been asked before, but how long did Sears offer the Roto-Swirl agitator?

Rob/rll70sman sweet set! Good job on cleaning them up too, is there nothing more satisfying than bringing something back to its original condition? I like the roto-swirl too, very neat! Is there a video in the near future?

Paint

Your washer and dryer look great! It reminded me of back when I was in the business. I used "Zynolite Epoxy" Avocado paint and it was a perfect match. It was an oil based enamel, not a 2 part epoxy. It thins well with Naptha, which helps it dry quickly. I had a Binks gun and a true 1 horsepower compressor. It seems that the paint line was made to match appliance colors. The Harvest Gold matches most brands, the White is spot on for appliance white, and the Navajo is good for the off white. The gloss grey is good for the inside of a Whirlpool/Kenmore dryer. In the '80s, Avocado was considered out-dated, and people thought the machines were old. Same was true of Harvest Gold, so I would repaint some of them. I used to sand the machines with 400 wet-or-dry paper (wet), wash them, and paint them in my back yard on a fork lift pallet. Mostly I used Navajo or White. I now have a $14 gun from Harbor Freight and a small compressor from them, and they work great on the odds and ends I sometimes paint. I haven't seen the old Zynolite Epoxy anywhere, but I found that it went on better and looked better than Rustoleum. If I had an appliance that still looked pretty good, I'd use car wax on it to give it an extra shine. Sometimes I would hit it with polishing compound and my buffer first. I never did this to a washer, but I did have the top of a classic stove redone at San Diego Porcelin. It looked like new. I would sometimes get used appliances in San Bernardino, and the washers were usualy clogged with minerals. To clean them, I would fill them with water and pour in about 1 quart of Muriatic Acid, and let it run. I used rubber gloves and a Scotch Brite sponge, and scrub the minerals off of the top of the tub and agitator. I would usually throw out the sponge after this, the acid would chew them up, but the tub would be nice and clean. Best wishes everyone

Very close to grandmas washer

My grandma had a washer similar to this in white but hers had the DAA and an 'automatic' water temp selection. I've never been able to figure out what year hers was but I know she kept it till 92 and it never needed a repair. She decided she wanted a new Kenmore, she said one of the knobs was getting hard to turn!
