Impressive that the dishwasher, with full-extension racks, can have the door open, fully loaded, with racks extended, and not fall over since it's not screwed to the countertop :-)

Pity they chose to go with a solid-sided silverware basket on the model with the Silver Shower.  Wouldn't a standard perforated basket have worked better?

CR never seemed to care much for the "Silver Shower" feature, but the one on my Mobile Maid performed great when we were filling it up a few times a day over New Years week, but with mostly "fresh" soils and my hot water heater set to "oolong" the machine probably would have had to fall apart in mid-cycle to earn a failing grade.  I think the idea was that the solid sides would direct water up and through the flatware creating sort of a tunnel effect.  I wonder if this was what Hobart was thinking to some extent by making solid dividers in their baskets?  I found that when approaching a full flatware load, it became more difficult to drop the pieces into the six compartments, some bouncing off the dividing ridges and falling down into the sump of the tub.  Imagine a fully loaded lower rack and flatware having to be retrieved from the lower regions.  I have a Maytag silver basket knocking around the garage, I should give that a try.

The reason the unit does not tip over is because there is a large concrete block at the left lower corner. GE did that with their dryers too so the they would not tip over with the door open. Does make the machine heavy if you ever have to move it.

My Aunt's Dishwasher P.O.D.

She had that machine. It replaced a circa 1955 Hotpoint Electric Sink.
I remember it was always my delight when we went to her house for dinner as I helped her load the Hotpoint. ( I was about 5-6 years old ! )

When they got the "New" GE, I was facinated with the Wash System as the Hotpoint was an Impeller. In 1966 at our Summer Home on the Cape, we bought a TOL Mobile Maid that had the Silver Shower Feature. That Straight sided silverware basket really got jammed when we had more than four people for dinner. Especially when GE said "Handles Up".

Something I have always wondered about... Has anyone else noticed that the Upper Rack pictured in most Dishwasher ads have smaller Plates that look like they are going to hit the top of the Wash Chamber ? For some reason I can never remember plate placement in the upper rack in the 60-70s style machines inless they were Bread and Butter Plates or Saucers. And GE had the Famous Saucer rack over the tower cut out. This always puzzled me as I would always read my Mother's Better Homes and Gardens just to look at the Appliance ads and would mimmick trying to load our Dishwasher like the ones in the ads and the plates would never fit.

That

silverware basket led to non stop disagreements at an aunt's house due to unclean flatware with this exact GE dishwasher. The basket eventually was relegated to the garage workbench to hold my uncle's hand tools. My cousins handwashed all the flatware and utensils. The extra lower rack space was used for large mixing bowls, casseroles and the like.

I, too, am baffled by the solid silverware basket. What possible advantage did some design guy see in that?

Leslie--- I thought you were going to say that your uncle took the silverware basket to his work bench and drilled holes in it.
