Hello AW Friends! Sorry I've been outta touch for the last year, I've had a pretty crazy time of things and have been doing a lot of soul searching. After 5 years in Los Angeles, I'm packing it in and heading back to good old NYC with a pit stop in PA for a few months. I've had a good time here but am still a NYer at heart. I'm tired of the flakes and phonies and the fact that there are no vintage appliances here to find - cuz they either don't let you access them or Revvin Kevin gets to them first. ;-) So, I look forward to picking up where I left off with my collecting, hopefully finding more goodies and matching dryers to go with what I've got while I'm home in PA. I look forward to meeting the new ones of you and reconnecting with the old. I hope you are all doing well in washer land here and i'm having fun catching up on posts and stuff. I'll be checking in more soon...

I also think I have a new fascination/appreciation of old Hoover Vacuums.... I got an old Constellation and am just LOVING it! ;-)
Happy New Year!

Matthew

Thought I'd show off my little beauty again to get back into the swing of things... ;-)

East Coasters

I guess you can take the boy out of the East, but you can't take the East out of the boy! I'm married to a wonderful guy from Long Island and here we are only 70 miles from the westernmost point in the lower 48 states but he still yearns for his lovely East Coast! Having been brought up here in the West, I grew up with the saying "East is least, West is best!"

Just having fun, sorry to see you go back, but hope you will be happy!

Thanks for keeping us informed and hope your collection grows to new heights!

Good for you! Welcome back to the north. Beautiful Americana, by the way.

Americana

Why were they called Americana's?  I have a newer Americana dishwasher that is really basic but it looks like this GE Americana is feature rich.  Can someone explain the history behind the Americana line?

Matthew - hope you have safe travels on your journey back to NY!

Hey Joe -

The Americana GE name was originally their TOL badge, starting in 1963 on their ranges and refrigeration equipment. I'm not sure when it moved over to laundry - I'd take a guess at 1970/1971.

I'm right next to NYC, in Northern Jersey. If you are ever in the area, we would love to have your company! It's more fun on the East coast, good move! lol

GE Americana

As Ben mentioned, the name was first used in '63. I'm thinking my neighbor Thelma's washer and dryer had the Americana nameplate on them, but not certain. I do know they said Versatronic, and that they were purchased sometime around '67-'69.

More recently GE has been using the Americana nameplate for a special budget line sold exclusively at Home Depot. Why GE went from using it for TOL products to a cheap line, I don't know. But look what they did to Hotpoint, which had been a premium line back in the mid 50's.

Hi Matthew!

I'm sorry to hear you will be heading back east, but I understand completely. It was really wonderful meeting you and we'll miss you!

Please keep in touch and let us all know what treasures you are able to fine back there!

I sent you an e-mail last night, but I am interested in the Maytag, Easy and Speed Queen manuals / catalogs!

I want to wish you all the best with life, health, love and happiness!

Kevin
