It is super quiet....almost silent......

it needs a new belt, the water level selector is broken, the bleach dispenser connector is snapped, and the SelfClean filter leaks around the seals, plus the light bulb needs replaced......I have my work cut out for me.......

but what a great addition to the collection.....if your gonna have one, this is it!....eventually I will get the matched dryer also, and these will be used for staging once lit to be seen thru the picture window...I can't wait!

VERY jazzy Martin

A 1981 model, built in Clyde, 51st week of 1981.

The 1980 model was similar, but lacked the triple dispenser (and had the older, slightly larger tub). I too love the white basket.

The self-cleaning filter shouldn't be an issue, but you have to remove the basket to access it (tub mounted, right?). No prob for you I'm sure.

Bleach dispenser connector? You mean hose? That may be an issue, I think they went NLA recently, but there must be one out there somewhere. Be careful with the triple dispenser reservoir - they are also NLA and pricey when on ebay.

Are you going to keep this belt drive for a while?

Is that a 95405 standard belt? If it's that quiet maybe it's a quiet pak belt?

I've got a matched set of these, with an electric dryer, but mine are in BAD shape!

One of these years I'll do a ground-up restoration on these. As of now, I've not even plugged them in.

I hope videos are forthcoming.

Hey Martin!

Congratulations on the spectacular catch!

She looks great, looks like little cosmetic work needs to be done. Looks like all you need to do is give her a quick rub down of soapy water, and finish it off with a nice polish of Armour-All.

Anyone else think that white tub is spectacular?

Are you going to change anything like add a tighter/wider belt or?

Thanks for sharing, let us know when shes all ready to roll.

Thanks for the dates and the info Gordon.....

it is the standard 95405 belt....just really worn.....so quiet, but no woo-woo sound.....when the lid is closed you can't tell what its doing

the port from the bleach dispenser is snapped off, and still in the hose......maybe with some epoxy, I can glue it back together....

the SelfClean is tub mounted, most likely disassemble, some sealant, and replace.......got to love a TRUE SelfClean, you can't mis the sight as globs of lint at first pump out...

YES Gordon......this one is staying in my collection....I have its spot already picked out......like I said, if your limited on space, and have to pick one...this is it!.......TOL with every option.......

suprised this isn't a 3 speed machine......

I've had the DD versions, 1988 and 1995, Limiteds.......they make this machine feel like going from Kirk to Picard!....lol

lots of buttons.......more of a glitz thing......theres a TOWELs cycle....same as Cotton/Sturdy.......Knit and Delicate run the same....PermPress does only one CoolDown....yet for the Ultimate TOL do it all machine, no Handwash!....

neat how the bulb "tilts" to remove.....

more later on my progress......

2nd GENERATION ELECTRONIC KENMORE WASHER

combo52's profile picture

These were neat machines I had several of these over the years, but sold the last pair when I got the black 1985 Limited Edition pair. Gordon your washer just uses the standard 95405 belt there is no special quiet belt for these, however these were all built with the Emerson motors and the quiet pac motor mounting brackets so it is indeed some what quieter than the older WPs & KMs especially those that had the square GE motors. WP had a running feud with GE around this time and stopped using any GE motors in any of their appliances around 1981.

I have several NIB Triple dispensers for this style washer for $70.00 each if anyone needs one.

Good luck with this one Martin! So glad it found a good home. This inspires me to get the 85 Limited Edition I have out and fix her up.

On 3-speeds - the last 3 speed belt-drive Kenmore was the '72 Lady, which was built up to 1974. I presume WP was in the same time frame for a 3-speed? There wasn't another 3-speed Kenmore again until the DDs re-debuted it a long while later (almost twenty years maybe?).

I don't remember much if any hubbub about 'handwash' in this era either. I am sure though, that if it was a big market mover at the time, it would have been included!

There are lots of tub mounted filters available. Unless you are bent on fixing this one, if it poses much trouble - ixnay it. They are fairly plentiful and not expensive.

Don't start me on Star Wreck comparisons - there is no comparison between Kirk and Picard. Both are great in their own ways, but no comparison.

What's the deal with the towels cycle...I forget...auto second rinse maybe?

Finally Martin, check the bleach portion of the dispenser. If the bleach part snaps in, you can have one of mine. I kept one that has a leaky crack in the detergent dispenser side in case I needed the solenoids. If we can get the bleach side off, it's yours and I'll throw out the rest.

G

I'll check the dispenser Gordon and get back to you......

its funny you mention the SQUARE GE motor John...as this has one

for a BD Kenmore....it doesn't get any better than this.....

all the hose routing...fascinating.....
was expecting a "J" hose for the pump supply for the dispenser....intead this one taps off the pump guard for its supply....

most of the noise you hear is from the dispenser solenoids when engaged....

I remember these from the catalog......and seing them in stores...operating...when machines were hooked up to water to see their features at work......I think Sears was the only one that did that!

Oh yeah Gordon, what is the status of your Limited Edition Belt-Drive Washer anyway?? You're going to get that baby up and running anytime soon. I like to see a full video of this VERY SPECIAL Washer going through an entire cycle (including you pushing the buttons on that baby just to turn it on).

I hate to hijack Martin's thread, so I'll be brief (for me? funny...)

My '85 Limited Edition is in the warehouse along with its stablemates. Can't say why for sure, but I haven't been working on machines much lately. This past fall would have been perfect time, weather-wise, but I didn't do it. Last work I did was on the coppertone 65 Kenmore alphabet washer. I put one of my cars back in the garage in the spot where I do my washer work, and it's been just that, a garage, for months.

I am making a short mental list of machines to work on though, and the L.E. just came up to close to the top. I have never used one of these except the 1979 90-series electronic. Never had a '78, '80, or '81 machine, so the L.E. will be a big treat if it works. First I want to get work on the 1982 Kenmore 24-inch machine that debuted here on the site being handed over to me in Sacramento from Andy/RedCarpetDrew, back in early December. That machine has a leak I have to find. After that I want to get my 1981 200-series machine running (may need only dusting off...I hope). Right behind that should be the electronic machine. I run hot and cold on electronic machines, pardon the pun. I had to get an agitator for it, as I opened the lid and to my surprise, there was nothing in the tub. So, I found the right 'tater on ebay as I surprisingly did not have the right one (NO, I would not rob one of my other machines).

I have Andy's gift of the 1986 Lady K to spruce up too - the newest Kenmore belt drive I've ever seen. If I'm going to bring 4 washers home, I have to take almost that many to the warehouse...separation anxiety, lol.

I would also like to start working on my Coppertone 1963 Lady K washer, and install a new basket drive in my '61 70-series. So, if I want to be busy with washers, I surely can be.

Back to Martin's thread now.

Gordon

Pop quiz on Kenmore model tags...

The model tag/data plate started out on the back. In the later 60s, a supplmental mini tag was added under the lid with just the model number so the machine didn't have to be pulled from the wall to get the number.

The tag went to the front lower left corner in very late 1975, right about the time the black panel era was starting. This could have happened in January 1976 or so. I had one early black panel washer that had the older two-tag configuration but that was it.

There were two types of front cabinet tags - the first were riveted on. Some time in 1979 they became glued on and were a mylar like strip instead of aluminum.

The tags remained on the front until first quarter 1983 (January I think) when they were moved to the lid well, where they returned to being a riveted on strip of aluminum. This coincided with the introduction of the powder coated tops and lids on some models, which replaced the rust-prone baked enamel coatings in lower and mid-line machines.

Cool?

Gordon

Nice find Martin. You've got a good one there for sure. I hope to find one someday. This would have been the counterpart to the WP Mark II at that time. I belive this is the predecessor to my 1986 LTD set. For an update on that I am leaving the tranny all original as the neutral drain started working?!. Just some cosmetic work now and it is wash in ready.
Again Corgrats.

Wow, Yogitunes. That is a gorgeous machine. Thanks for the vids. Don't know if someone clarified earlier but the Towels cycle does have the 2nd rinse auto-programmed. I worked for Whirlpool from 1985 thru 1989. A Sr. Home Economist had that set (in black) in her Lab. I think it was the Limited Edition set. She was getting ready to retire and went out and bought that set because she felt it was the last of the good machines. (Many Whirlpool employees resisted the DD machines).

Is it true you have 8 seconds to select a cycle and options once the power switch is energized or the control defaults to Cotton/Sturdy with warm wash/cold rinse?

I will get the mate drayer to this once the house sells.......all in time

so far.....I got the dispensers working, except for the bleach is still cracked.....will search for a replacement later......

new belt installed..........

self clean filter removed and sealed......no leaks so far.....

will have to get a new pump, this one is starting to sieze up.....

and new console light installed.....just not as bright as a full fluorescent.......super nice anyway.......

also got a Penta-Swirl agitator off ebay for 5.00....just to trade in and out with the DA.....

thanks for the replys

Yes....you do have 8 seconds to decide changes......or else it defaults to Cotton/Sturdy, warm/cold....basically a regular cycle....but if your not doing anything special....just load, add detergent, and lift the start button....its all go from there.....

funny for these models, the buzzer volume control is on the back of the console, a slide for up or down.....

ELECTRONIC BD WASHERS

combo52's profile picture

Todd these were introduced  in 1977 in both the WP and KM lines as their TOL models, first automatic washers in the US if not the world to have fully micro-processor control.

Martin bypassing the active lint filters on WP and KM machines often caused the water pumps to clog with lint and ruined them. We used to see this problem all the time on machines that others had removed the filters on and then the customers called us because the washer was broken again. We would install the correct filter and a new pump if it was one that you couldn't take apart and clean and they would never have another problem again for years. With no filter be careful if you wash very linty loads, old rags, rugs etc, as it is getting harder to get new pumps for these washers.

Sorry John......

I may have worded that wrong......

I removed the self clean filter, took it apart, cleaned it out, resealed it, and put it back on the machine.............this was one of the leaks on this machine......interesting, never got to open one before like this, and to see how the rubber sleeve holds against one side to filter, and the other to cleanout, and closing off the port.....I still prefer the ones located in the bottom corner....PITA to remove the inner tub to get this thing out......

there is a small drip from the pump, took it off and cleaned it out, but the leak is comming from the shaft seal, and you cannot spin the pulley freely, there is binding.....so a new one is one order....

Towels Cycle

Is there any difference between the Towels and Cotton/Sturdy cycle? Is it the temperatures or wash time? Same question applies to the Knit and Delicate cycles. 8 and 6 minutes respectively, perhaps?
