Looks like an 18" Kenmore D&M design dishwasher.

D & M

stands for Design and Manufactering- They built darn near everybodys dishwashers through the 50-70s.They built dishwashers for Sears Kenmore,Magic Chef, Tappan, Preway, Caloric, Speed Queen, Modern Maid,I think some Kelvys, Roper and anyone else that wanted to have a "me too" dishwasher in their appliance line up. These are the folks that brought up the much-loved Roto-Rack-the round upper rack that spun around past the sprayer

school dishwasher

so why is it being replaced?

Post# 48182 , Reply# 5   10/30/2004 at 14:01 (7,107 days old) by Compwhiz ()

Because we dont have much time and money

The door springs have broke

the bottom lid has popped open

It leaks

its a mess

the pump is wearing out

Time and money

The door springs have broke

Those are a weak spot in those machines, but cheap & easy to replace

the bottom lid has popped open

You mean the access panel? Just a couple of screws

It leaks

from where? door? new gasket, easy. Hoses? Only 2, pump to drain and pump to spray tube/upper spray arm. easy replacement. Motor seal? Replaceable from inside machine at which time you would replace the impeller, too

its a mess

the pump is wearing out

"pump" in this case is just an impeller kit, replaceable from inside the machine and not expensive.

These machines are do easy and cheap to work on, it's amazing.

ok

IT was assembeled with glue

it leaks at the bottom of the door

The impeller seems to be okay it squeeks when the pump shuts off

In order to fix it, we will have to pull the counter top off. The idiots who installed our tiles put the tiles right in front of it

repairing D & M dishwasher

IT was assembeled with glue

What was assembled with glue?

it leaks at the bottom of the door

door gasket, and there's a retrofit part that goes inside the door that addressed that problem

The impeller seems to be okay it squeeks when the pump shuts off

Normal characteristic of the ceramic/carbon motor shaft seal, most all of them make that noise. Not a sign of failure.

In order to fix it, we will have to pull the counter top off. The idiots who installed our tiles put the tiles right in front of it

I've seen that problem before, you're right, what idiots, a friend of mine has a dishwasher with the same problem, trapped in the hole. But, you'll have that problem even with a new dishwasher

Well, it's death knell is the door rusting. That part IS replaceable, but it's fairly expensive (maybe not as much as a full-size machine, but somewhere close to $100) The bottom of those is a weak spot on those machines, my '78 KM version was on it's 3rd liner, though this 3rd liner was plastic, they don't make the porcelain anyones anymore (though that may not be true for the 18" machines). Everything else is minor stuff.
