I sure as heck would like to know how the automatic water level worked on these machines and how many years they used it.

This came up before. I think we decided it was an extremely rare feature that never took off or it was just "creative advertising". There was a lever on the bottomm left that suggests the water level is "automatic" in that it starts the agitation according to the position of the lever.
