Does anyone know if Whirlpool ever made a fabric softener dispenser that fit on this agitator?
I have a 2004 DD machine with this agitator that I'd like to add a fabric softener dispenser to.

"all are the same"

Are not the same. There are a couple of major types, some clip on the top and some sit inside the agitator and drain through the center. The top on this agitator comes off so have a look at these 2 parts and determine which it takes. The model of the machine would help.

Internal drain type:

Top mount:

The second one is used on Kenmores and some Whirlpools. I ran into this issue with my DD Kenmore and people telling me that all the DD dispensers were the same, which isn't true. The second model just clips onto the top of the agi and drains around the bottom where it meets. You agi looks like it takes the top one, but a model number would verify.

It is model GCAM2792LQ0 purchased in February 2004
Here is the page from the parts list.
This is considered a "commercial" machine and did not originally come with a fabric softener dispenser as an option.

I think Ricky's original suggestion was correct that the internal one works, I misread that I think. I posted both in case, they're cheap.

Catalog to the rescue!

I checked my WP parts catalog. It's from 1992, but since this was a long-running agitator, I figured it was worth a shot.

It shows many agitator versions with their piece by piece assembly. On at least four are the 3355758 cap. Over the caps shows a 63580 softener dispenser, which looks strickingly like the internal one that Tim pointed out.

So, I would buy with confidence on the Internal. Check ebay - they may be even cheaper there? Part 63580.

Didn't the snap-on style come on the flat-top Dual-Action agitator Kenmores? I've never seen one of these on a Whirlpool...

softener dispenser

except for some odd Whirlpools sold at Sears I believe that all Whirlpools had the internal dispenser as their agitator had tall augers or upper portions. The orignal kenmore DA agitators had short augers and the dispenser attached to the top of the auger which made them as tall as the Whirlpools. Some Whirlpools sold at Sears in the late 90's and early 2000's had the original Kenmore short augers installed I have no idea why except that it made them Sears exclusive models. Like Gordan said all Whirlpools even the straight vane models and the straight vane model with the removeable lint filter take the internal dispenser

WP DD Fabric Snoftner Dispenser

Mark your agitator uses a very common FSD the tall internal one. There is also a short internal one that is used on the Thin-Twin washers that will also work on the taller agitators, but the tall one won't work on the TTs.

Thanks, Tim, Rick, Gordon & John! I just replaced the neutral drain mechanism, clutch & drive coupler in this machine. I'm planning on "gifting" it to my brother and sister-in-law to replace a failing 2001 Norge-tag and thought it would be nice to add a fabric softener dispenser. Nothing says Valentine's day like a rebuilt DD!!!

Now, if only I could find one of those Maytag cellophane wrappers with the big red bow from the 1960s!

Here she is all cleaned up after 8 years of a "hard labor" in a condo building:

Console close-up:
(I'm not really sure what made these machines "heavy-duty"?
John? Gordon? Bueller? Any wisdom to share on this issue?)

HEAVY DUTY WASHER AND DRYERS

combo52's profile picture

Their is usually no difference, and we can thank Westinghouse and Frigidaire for this nonsense as both of these companies started this in the early to mid 1960s. WH started calling their machines HD and Frigidaire called their 1963 line the Sturdy Washer. And the rest is history, even MT came out with little stickers in the mid 1970s that we applied to the machines on the sales floor because they were getting beating up buy the other makes that said HD. Some customers would tell us if these are so good and they are so expensive why aren't they HD like the less expensive WPs.

I even had one lady who was interested in the A207 but started it is just my husband and I that I wash for, I don't want a HD machine. I sold her the washer and promised that hers would be a regular model knowing that none of the MT washers in the warehouse actually had these stupid stickers on them. We also had a few complaints that when people did get their new machines that their machine did not say HD, so we had to tell them that MT forgot the sticker and send them a sticker.

Back to the original question, most manufacturers justify the Heavy Duty label buy telling you that the same machines are used commercially, which is largely true.

Commercial Whirlpool

I've always liked the look of these WP machines, very straight-forward design. Why is the timer and buttons so staggered on the commercial machines?
