This weekend we put the industrial (water-resistant) carpeting and the door to the designated laundry room in the shed...a few more paint touch-ups and that's it! I moved in and connected 2 washers (complete with new braided SS fill hoses), the WO-65-2 and 1-18 WC, as well as 4 vacuums down, and did some wash! Here are a few "sneak previews"...anything in particular you notice on the 1-18?

Up and down

1-18, aka "The Beast", washing...definitely not the quietest machine!

1952 Frigidaire WO-65-2 Unimatic in full glory! The carpet seems to help in stabilizing the machine...I don't need the rubber "foot" anymore! It does vibrate a little while it's ramping up to speed, but there's no shaking present.

I used silicone spray on the 1-18's snubber pad and it doesn't seem to be shaking as much as it used to either.

Washing away, super quiet and smooth like a Unimatic should be! The 2-ring agitator is unique as well, with the rhythmic "smacking" of the water, and who can forget the "SNAP" of the timer escapement springing forward!

Wow!!

Love the window lid on the 1-18 :-). The Unimatic looks great too! And I love the aquamarine walls... just screams out laundry! :-)

Great work! Now let me book that plane ticket to Houston... LOL

Jon :-)

Lookin good and I like the walls too, makes everything "standout" instead of being "washed" away.
I'd like to know though, how do control panels get all scratched up like that? There was that old Caloric ME (microwave/range) at the thrift and it's still there now for months. It's the same way on the control panel, scratched, scraped, missing paint, and every time I go in and see it there I just can't figure it out how that would happen.

The machines look great in their new home! How about a "whole room" shot so we can see the entire scope of your descent into madness ;-)

Very nice laundry room Austin! Love the color also. How many machines will be used in your new laundry/shed room?

Control panels probably get scraped up really bad, especially on a washer, when people put things on top of them, like detergent bottles and such. As the machine shakes and vibrates, the objects rub up against the control panel and takes off the paint. One of the biggest problems too is the fact that stylized paint schemes like woodgrain and metallics don't adhere to the surface like the standard enamels used to paint the rest of the machine. Aluminum used in the contstruction of the faceplates don't help much either, since paint doesn't adhere to it as good.

Great job Austin!! I too love your choice of wall color. Looks like a fun room. How many machines will you be able to fit in there? Terry

Hi Terry & Jamie,

I'll have space for 6 or 7 machines, so I need to choose carefully on the "keepers"!! :)

The DD Kenmore, Dual-Tumble, and eventually the '82 Kenmore are too "new/boring" so they will be sold after all of my projects are finished.

Nice job there, that has been a lot of work! Looking forward to the overall shots to see how you set it all up.

As for the controls getting scratched up, I think long fingernails and over aggressive cleaning might have caused some of that too. I have worked on womens cars that have worn all the lables and words off everything on the dash, especially the radio with their nails.

I see where this hobby is taking me.. LOL You all have awesome multiple hook up systems, are any of you on a septic tank system? Seems like that might be a problem for me, they tell me not to do but 3 loads a day if I can help it so as not to overload the system and kill all the active bacteria, anyone else heard such a thing?
The shed idea might be a great option down south but up here you would have to really keep a lot of heat out there to protect your babies.

Scott, Steve 1-18 has a septic system, but his laundry studio doesn't go thorugh there. I'll ask him for ya and let ya know.

Scott, and yes, I've heard about that 3/day load limit. In conjunction with comments about my marathon laundry days where I"ve done 11-20 loads in two days lol. I'd never be able to live on a spetic system, unless it was a front loader involved lol.

Hmmm. I wasn't given any warnings about that. I don't specifically recall if I've washed more than 3 loads in a day ... but it's certainly possible. If I use one of the whirlpool tubs along with two loads, that'd likely be equivalent or more. Maybe the design of my septic system is able to handle that kind of volume. The pump tank has (I think) 800 gallons capacity, and a high-level sensor that will trigger an immediate pump-down outside the scheduled time.

new console for your 1/18

I have a nice, much better looking, less beat up console you can have for your 1/18 ........ I just need your address to ship to. Be patient, it may take a week or two for me to get it out to you but I will before Thanksgiving. I promise.

septic tank systems

"Seems like that might be a problem for me, they tell me not to do but 3 loads a day if I can help it so as not to overload the system and kill all the active bacteria, anyone else heard such a thing? "

Some localities will permit a separate septic system that's just for "gray" water from sinks and washers. Of course this means extra expense, but may be worth it if you plan to stick around for some years

Interesting, however living right near the Chesapeake Bay, they are so strict with septic systems, if you put in a new one now, it has to have this nitrate removal system that is very expensive. I don't see any special programs for Maryland. From what I am learning, if you do a lot of laundry and cleaning, you have to replace the active enzimes or bacteria into the system, and it will stay working. Thanks for all the info! Sounds like there are a few options out there depending on where you live.
