on the back just above the drain hose outlet, you will see the metal flap of the lid switch......something as simple as a clothes pin can be used to pull this flap down and hold it in place.....

I have also used a cable tie

some have used a bungee cord, clipped over the top of this flap, and stretched down and clipped under the bottom of the machine

did you need a pic?

just clip the clothes pin onto this flap

the top of the clothes pin is pushing against the little box above it, causing this flap to push down and activate the switch

almost anything will work........you could take a box top, and fold it several times and slide it in there.....

Awesome. I've been seeing comments on You Tube where people are taking these apart to wire the lid switch mechanism together. Why no one can just state how to do it is beyond me. My old Maytag had an easy to override lid switch. I could override it at will just to see if I had enough water/soap in the load. Love my Speed Queen, but I want to be able to see the agitation w/o trying to peer thru the small crack you get before you have opened the lid to far and it stops.

well, with some video explanations on youtube, and may fall here as well, is always a disclaimer, that no one is responsible if you take on yourself to alter/override the lid switch, and someone like a child gets hurt.....the country is sue happy, at this point they would want to blame the person showing them how to override rather than themselves, A for doing it, and B for letting a child play with the machine....even though the instructions are clear on a perfect running machine, never let a child play in around or on said machine....

a few years back, I think it was Frigidaire that got sued for a machine, that was over 10 years old, lid switch did not work anymore, and a 9YO girl got her arm ripped off while trying to add clothing while the machine was spinning.....she won, big time, thats why we have locking mechanisms on machines now!....

this person would not take blame for herself, as letting a child play with or around a machine, and actualyl Frigidaire or any cpany should not be held responsible for a machine, in this case the lid switch for the life of the machine....thats what a warranty if for....after the fact, if the switch stopped working, get it fixed...better yet, don't let a child, who has no clue operate such a machine......

I was 3YO when I learned to use my mothers filterflo.......was never stupid enough to put my hand in that machine anytime it was running.....

then again, you have some of the more stupid parents who think their child is SO smart.....and there ain't a brain in there at all....my kids who are honor roll students, do some of the most bizarre things that would boggle your mind....and do the same mistake over and over and over again......you would think I didn't teach them anything!

Disable lid switch on Speed Queen

I just bought the Speed Queen top loading washer (and matching dryer).
I replaced my fromt loading LG with the Speed Queen and am loving the way my clothes are coming out so clean AND from the drier very fluffy.

I used the clothes pin trick and now I can open the lid to make sure all is working as expected.

I joined this forum just to say THANK YOU for the clothes pin trick.
I can open the lid and the machine keeps going.

LOVE IT !!!

Thank you !!

Wish I had a dollar for every report like that. You can tumble until the cows come home, it'll never be the same washing action as wringing through an agitator.

If you really want clean and fluffy, and you're electrically inclined, these SQ washers can be made to rinse with warm water instead of cold. I think directions and schematics are still in the archives for this site.

SQ can be made to rinse with warm water

Thank you, JeffG.

Unfortunately, I am I am not electrically inclined.
And I would not want to make an error and negate my warranty.

My entire area has no gas. It is all electric.
So I wash only on weekends when electricity is cheaper.

In any case, I am VERY happy with the results.

I am using my HE detergent and I believe, though, I am using VERY little,
the reason I have so many suds (and so high) is due to the incomplete rinse from
the previous washer.

LOVE MY SPEED QUEEN.

purchased a new 2015 top load mechanical Speedqueeen washer

Do I have to remove the front panel and lift the flat horizontal top to be able to pin this lid switch so I can raise the lid and see inside when running? I don't quite get on how you show to pin with a cloths pin. Could you show a step by step on how to do this? Thanks

I can't show you step by step but its in the back of the washer..no you don't lift any panel..look at the back of your machine..than at the pic above. Cheryl

Bypass lid switch

On the speed queen to clip on the clothes pin. Do you have to remove a panel first to access the switch? I'm getting the washer from a dealer in lake hopatcong soon

Welcome Joe!.....

this is easier than pie......nothing to remove, or cut, or disassemble.....

as pictured above, keep the lid closed, and from the back of the machine, just above the drain hose, you will see that metal flap, just slide the clothes pin over that flap, and your set......easy on, easy off.....you can do it faster than the time to read this post.....

where in Jersey are you located?

Just want to say Thank-You SOOOOOO much, yogitunes, for the info/fix! I have been soooooo bummed that I couldn't do my usual method of loading my washer - the zen of layering the clothes in as it fills. For some reason, I put off researching it on-line. My old washer's lid lock had become disabled on it's own years ago, so when I got the new Speed Queen, I REALLY missed that. Hard to teach old dogs new tricks! Again, thank-you for taking the time to offer great, helpful info! And the photo really helped! You made my day - heck, my month! I will once again look forward to doing the laundry! You ROCK!

Thank you!

I too signed up for this site just to say 'THANKS' to yogitunes for the tip & pic. I love my new Speed Queen washer but having it 'go dead' as soon as I lifted the lid was bothersome. Now it is the perfect machine!

and you are so welcome.....that's what this site is all about, helping others....

this was an easy one, newer machines are getting harder to by-pass these switches....but it is all for safety.....even though many of our machines operate with the lid open, were not crazy enough to put our hand in there to cause an accident....

enjoy, and happy washing!

New Speed Queen model lid shut off

It is a little more difficult to see, but it is just above the discharge hose in a narrow opening. It needs to be held down. I used a long cable tie and connected it to the discharge hose coupling.

Standard operating proceedure-----

as soon as I bring them in---- I disable that f%#king switch.
Hard to believe some dumb-ass would actually stick their arm into a spinning machine to see if it really would take their arm off. I recall peering into our Unimatic as a child and watching it spin. It was pretty obvious to me it could put some serious hurt on me if I stuck my hand or arm in there. But hey, there's the McDonalds "Hot" coffee debacle.Target just got sued because a woman's toddler picked-up a used hypodermic needle in the parking lot. When the woman saw what the child had in her hand she "slapped" the needle to the ground----and got punctured in the process. So now she sues Target!!! How the f%#k is Target supposed to control what people drop in their parking lot??!! Ridiculous!!! Only in America.

Newer models

The newer models have the back above the drain hose covered with a plate. You now have to unscrew the back above hose to get at the switch

Clothespin trick worked no problem on my AWNE82 built in September 2017. It was a perfect fit. Access to area is still open as shown in the above photo.

I used a piece of cardboard. Would take 2 seconds to remove if I ever needed lid function again. I want to say thank you as well, had it not been for this thread I would have been splicing wires.

The frontal cortex in children (and young adults sometimes up to 24yrs old) is still developing. This is the part of the brain that makes decisions on things like right/wrong/go/stay etc. Obviously if it's not matured, even kids with high IQ's struggle.  It's what we used to call having street smarts or not.

A Harvard neurologist published a book called The Teenage Brain.  A fascinating study on the effect of binge drinking, drug use and the stupid decisions teens often make. One thing I was particularly fascinated with was that she found teens apparently are hard-wired to leave home. And even if they don't want to yet, just thinking about it gives them an endorphin/dopamine rush.

I pretty much like my hands the way they are--so while I'd once relished in the thrill of washing my tub spin, (via "something" that I'd inserted in my lid switch, that I simply don't recall) I wisely kept my distance away, and even think back to the few times I shift things around in the tub while the agitator is just moving, with it never occurring that my hand could get caught in the action & too late to free it if it ever got snagged in the garments of clothes that I need to turn off the machine first (and usually move to where the water fills & allow thew additional water being added to mat down the material so it gets its dunking & drubbing, rather than force it down)...

A delay in a dryer switch being available for our dryer led the repairman for it to temporary bypass the switch needed to shut it off when the door was opened, and only once or twice had I opened it during that pending repair, after convincing the repairman we would leave the door shut until the dryer completely finished its drying; it was maybe the FIRST time that I'd FORGOT, the SECOND?--er, well,...

New 2018 sp models

Anyone know how to bypass the new 2018 model switches?

greatly appreciated...

I saw a video on Youtube where a magnet was used to bypass the lid switch. It was necessary to remove the top. I like the clothespin method much better. Very easy to remove. Like most people, I have always used clothespins to fix things, including pulling them apart when a small shim was needed somewhere.

Speed queen lid switch SQ 2019 Classic

I tried your idea with the clothes pin inserted but now the washer will not start even with the lid down. Lights are on but on/off light is flashing. This is for the SQ classic 2019
After removing the clothes pin the washer started.

Machines with electronic controls typically won't start another cycle until the lid is opened/closed after the previous cycle ... so you'll probably have to remove the bypasser to release the switch (open the lid), then reinsert it.

My 2017 9 Series has electronic controls and the clothespin trick worked. Wonder if SQ got wind of how many owners bypass the safety switch and added the extra layer of security? Keeping things on the down-low is not one of the internet's strong suits, lol.

Hope the clothespin on my machine doesn't fall off at some point. I'd never be able to move the washer enough to get behind and clip it back into place. Would miss not being able to see if the load is gradually turning over, or to watch the spin-drain for kicks and giggles.
