As you may recall, your humble still-out-of-work PC tech/help desk analyst bought a Kenmore 1389 dishwasher with his merit bonus.

It's a year and then some later and the Kenmore has been a real cleaning champ. I've been treating it to a quart of vinegar every four weeks to keep it clean.

So, imagine my dismay when a few glasses starting coming out clouded and hazy. Odd, because other items in the top rack still came out crystal clear and squeaky clean.

Well, we traced it to a common product my wife swears by, or more precisely, a specific flavor of the nationally advertised brand, not the house brand: Airborne. Cathy insists that we drink a dose before and after interaction with large groups of people, like choir practice and family gatherings.

Lemon-lime Airborne was on sale at Walgreens at a better price than the house brand, so I grabbed a couple. Previously we had only been taking Wal-Born (no kidding!) berry flavor.

Berry-flavored Wal-Born washes right out, but lemon-lime Airborne leaves a residue that even resists the Pots/Pans cycle. From now on, berry-flavor only, regardless of brand.

Problem resolved, panic averted. Whew! :)

Some of these things are funny and how they react........years ago, a true cleaner for a dishwasher was powdered TANG.......if it can clean the grime and scale of a dishwasher, what's it doing to YOUR insides?.....lol

theres a lot of things you can mix up yourself, only to let it sit for a while, and see all this sediment left at the bottom......makes you think!

thats why for the most part, I stick with Kool-Aid......Water, Sugar, Colored Flavor.......as simple as that.....and use this to wash down the Multi-Vitamin....

Yogi... re the Tang thang... Tang is basically flavored ascorbic acid.. aka vitamin C. It's a natural product derived from citrus fruits, not a chemical type chemical,, although it is a chemical I suppose.. LOL
It's used in bread dough etc.. I usually have a small bottle of it around here somewhere,, you buy it at bakery supply places.

That stuff they sell in the dw section for cleaning out your dishwasher called Glisten.. I think its called... well it's ascorbic acid as well, at about 4 times the cost of tang.

Petek

things are re-named and labelled all the time........

AuriDri for swimmers ear.....at 7.00 a bottle.....is 4 ounces of regular Alcohol, which can be bought for .50

Sleeping pills......a bottle of 24 pills for 6.00.......identical to Benadryl....generic 100 count for less money......

the list goes on and on......but does make you think and compare.......pay big bucks for a specialty item......when it can be had cheaper, and you probably already have it at home......

even dishwasher detergent can be used as a washer cleaner for mold issues.......you already have it at home.....why buy the specialty item....

Chlorine for a pool has many uses......you can mix your own concentration......clean the dishwasher, washer, cement sidewalk......potent!

@Petek

I've been noticing that since decades ago...

In argentina Ayudín launched a tablet version if it's chlorine bleach. It was the first time I've seen chlorine bleach in small tablets (except those traditional hockey disk like chlorine tablets for pools).

That gave me the idea. Now I use HTH for cleaning. It's easier to transport, it's cheaper and a 1kg pot lasts for more than a year.
