Lady Kenmore

Posted these back in 2006 and have been daily drivers until two years ago, and replaced with new Speed Queens front loaders. The ladies now vacation at the weekend home with limited use :). Now for a side note of all the washers I have had and used over the years this set has out cleaned my Maytags and Speed Queens I use today with great fabric care.

Really, they're all my favorites but I have said a number of times that if I were forced to get rid of them all and could only keep one that my '72 1-18 is the one that would stay.  For two reasons.   1.  It's flexibility to handle smaller and larger loads and 2.  It's more rare color among the line.

1958 Filter-Flo

My favorite is Eddy's 1958 Filter-Flo. Robert has one too; his is turquoise. I love the AGI with the pink cap and the copper filter pan. I love the way they sound!!!

I have fond memories of my Mom's '60 filter-flo and the sounds it made.

If I Could Only Keep One Classic

combo52's profile picture

It would diffidently be one of my 29" Kenmore Gas Combos ,it is one classic machine that you don't have to make excuses for.

Fortunately I can keep more than one, so my laundry room will always include a 1-18, my 1971 LKM modified to include 720 RPM spin speed and changed to Super Capacity and Suds_Saver, My SQ FL washer with water heater, My 1998 WP DD Resource Saver washer with spin rinsing, My Frigidaire Unimatic WO-65 with 2 deep rinses, My 1962 Frigidaire Custom Imperial pair washer still has the Rapid-dry 850 RPM spin and the dryer is a Filtrater air cooled condenser model, and my GE sink-top FF washer.

Plus Many Others.

Any one in Robert's collection.

I especially covet his Philco, his Apex, his Kelvinator, his LK (PANK!), and the SuperUnimatic. (grin)

In all seriousness. If I could have my choice, my favorite would be either the Philco or a 56 Unimatic... like the one only a fool would love...

I have said this before and will say it again - The hotpoint Aqaurius WM64 is the very best machine you can get, Well one of them, and I am still looking for one. Spin Speed: 1200RPM. Load = 5KG. Built in 1997-1999, these machines were the last of hotpoint to be built to last.

There are so many favourites. I sometimes do like Tom, use different machines for different types of laundry, trying to find out what the best machine and best cycle is for a certain load.

I also have some favourites that I don't have. One machine that will be always one of my favourites is the Miele 421S. One of the things I love about this machine is the rapid advance timer. Here's a picture of it in a 1973 Miele catalogue.

My Favorite Washer(s).... (Cont'd)....

(03). I would even go on the record and say that I would love the more modern LG Front Loaders now, but I have recently seen on "You Tube" that their current top loader has exploded inside of someone's house while it was SUPPOSEDLY doing a load of laundry, causing CONSIDERABLE damage to the matching dryer beside it. There was also some damage that was seen on the walls inside the laundry room where the machines were situated. The washer ended up being a TOTAL LOSS, despite the fact that it was less than a year old.

So, having said that, luckily, I happen to like the newer high-end Speed Queen Front Loaders as well. So, if I were to go modern as opposed to vintage right now, these "Queens" would also be my favorite. They are pictured below.

Well, I don't have anything quite as spectacular as many of you have, however, I am pretty excited about the mid eighties (85 I believe?) filter flo GE washer/dryer set I picked up. I wanted a washer that cleaned better than my late 2000's Whirlpool and did a bit of research... I decided on the GE filter flo because it was regarded as a good cleaner and I always liked the 1970's filter flo my parents had when I was little - I remember the washer because of the loud bang or pop it made when it would stop spinning. When this matching set in mint shape were available, i bought them immediately. They came with all the paperwork and a never used min-basket and filter - the lady never knew what it was for so she never used it!

Sorry about the bad pics.

Price Of 1966-67 Lady Kenmore Washer

@ "KenmoreBill700"

Keep in mind that the price tag that you see in the ad of the 1966-67 Lady Kenmore Washer that I recently uploaded onto this thread is in 1966-67 Dollars.

While that may look like an astoundingly low figure today, $239.95 was considered a whole lot of money back in 1967. So, I don't know if I would consider that a steal or not.

If this machine were available and in production today, the price of this magnificent machine would be $1,698.85. (if not more). That's given if they use the original steel and metal parts and don't cheapen the damn thing out by substituting plastic for steel and metal (which is what these machines were made and built with back then).

The price of today's TOL Kenmore Elite Front Loaders will tell you that (and from what I found, the "spider looking" stainless steel drums, and the plasic outer tubs and other parts found in these newer machines do not hold a candle to the 1966-67 Lady Kenmore in its state).

Given the level of quality that was entailed between then and now??? The 1966-67 Lady Kenmore was definitely the better value. In terms of build quality and durability, it was clearly a better machine hands down.

The Washer(s) that Started it All for me

bajaespuma's profile picture

were the 2  almost identical GE Filter-Flo's that came into our house in 1961. Ours was a 1962 model WA-750 W, our downstairs neighbors had the same model from the year before, a WA-750 V. I found the differences between those two models fascinating. I was too young at the time to understand the concept of model years (and, more importantly the savings realized when you bought a close-out model from the previous year). Where our machine had a chrome plated control panel with a black and white scheme, our neighbors' had the same only with blue on blue (sigh!). Theirs also had a control dial that was white with blue and red lettering that would light up when it was moved from the "OFF" positions (much bigger "sigh!") where ours was high-contrast white on black and no backlight.

The story was that both sets of washers and dryers, 4 machines were bought on the same day from a grand old appliance store on 28th street and Park Avenue South called "Hampton Sales" (it was one of those stores where my Parents knew their salesman by name and always came to him when they needed something; he was there for many years because this was still the era where companies felt that loyalty should be mutual). The machines were delivered to our duplexes on the same day and a mistake was made. The blue 1961 machine that I would later covet was delivered to our bathroom on the 4th floor (yes, it was a walk-up with narrow staircases) along with our black and white dryer. The delivery men begged both ladies of the house to leave the essentially identical machines where they were, but my Mother, always the princess, demanded that her washer and dryer, that had cost her a premium, match. Neighbor Marian didn't care, but my Mother had her way as usual. I have always wanted that blue and red on white lit dial and now I have it.

Bendix

Another of my favorites is my 1949 Bendix found bolted down in its original home.I really enjoy this machine even though I sometimes have to lie on top of it when it spins.Last week I started it and the motor was louder than usual I turned my back for 30 seconds and then smoke was pouring out the back of it.Wow did that stink.Today its working again though, looks like i am going to have to look into having the motor rebuilt if i can get it out of there.
