A while back, in January, a Canadian member posted this thread (number 38300) about a GE dishwasher they wanted to sell.

Being in Ottawa, I figured that I could make this happen.

Well, I did! I was in Ottawa this past Saturday and picked up this '2nd Generation' GE Mobile Maid dishwasher!

The model and serial number seem to indicate this is one of the last of this particular style. The serial number, I believe, dates this machine to 1956.
Hmmmm.... 1956 seems to be a popular year in my collection!

This 'Maid' has been forgotten for some time!
The porcelain tub seems to be in good shape, just in need of some scrubbing to tidy it up a bit.

The original detergent cup is intact - yay!

BUT - we have a bit of a problem with the impeller here... Methinks I will be adding this part to my 'parts wish list'...

Racks are just fine, though. Lower rack needs a touch-up, but that's about it!

Cabinet is in fair shape - I think it will be repainted. I will probably keep it white, though. GASP!

The original unicouple faucet connector is pretty cool. Reminds me of the upper bowl of a Sunbeam vacuum coffeemaker! The hoses seem to be in good shape still. That plug's gotta go, though...

Had to check out under the Maid's skirt... Note the chain drive for the timer dial!

The drain chamber looks good - motor and other parts look to be intact, too!

Component testing time!

First up - the timer motor. It passed!

Next bit of test - the drain pump. After a little nudge to get it moving again, it seemed to run fine.

Time to replace this cord and give the machine a real test!

And the test was a success! I let the machine complete a 'dry' cycle and it did just fine.
I am still fearful of a cold snap, so I put off a water test for now. But it will be happening soon, I hope!

That's really fun - love the red dial! Congrats on another cool find. I'm sure you'll find that impeller out there somewhere, it's worth the hunt for that cutie.

Paul, That is a great looking Mobile Maid. Did the lid open on it's own at the end of the cycle? My 1SP40M1 does. Your serial number: 56300527 (56=1956, 30=30th week - week of July 22-28).

Congratulations!

Mike

Paul -

Great find here. I've always loved the coral colored dial on this machine. So pretty. May the force be with you in finding a new impeller!

Looking forward to more test results and pics.

Patrick

What a great machine Paul !

I had a chance to own this model brand new in the early 90's.

The machine had a blue control panel instead of what you have here.

Unfortunetly they moved and no dishwasher and no phone call.

I wish they could mold the impeller ...

I wonder if it's possable ?

Anyway I hope everything works out, nice GE Paul.

hi paul

that machine can be easily adapted to use the standard impellers from the old D&M brand machines.

i have one identical to yours that i got in cleveland a couple years ago and i had bought 3 of those impellers from either larry in parma or mark michaels, can't remember. with a little bit of tinkering i put a new D&M impeller on my g.e. impeller dishwasher shown in pic below.

i think mark michaels may have a couple of those left. i used all of mine on my 3 impeller dishwashers that i have.

enjoyed your thread. i ran my g.e. the other day and it runs great! small leak out the top on occasion but nothing to get upset about. have fun!

Very cool find Paul. Also, it is awesome that the detergent dispenser is still intact! Looking forward to seeing some wash go through this one.

Paul, the giant dial

mickeyd's profile picture

Just sends me every time. What was it about the mid 50's and the giant dials? I can think of three distinct ones right now. The Blackstones, the LK DW on the board now, and ........mmmm.....mmmmmm....Glad I'm not up at the podium) Foot in mouth
