A lovely old Whirlpool in Adelaide.

May be of interest to our Australian friends.

Look at all those buttons.

Fancy machine! What do the heat selector buttons do? I see there are separate wash and rinse temperatures buttons too.

Hi Louis,

These machines have a heater built in.

You can chose the temp of the incoming water (Like on a normal TL machine) and then set the machine to boost to 40degC or 60degC. It'd take about 90mins at 2400watts to go from cold to 60degC. Once its heated the cycle proceeds as normal.

A lot of people would've had the machine in an outhouse or on a verandah with only minimal hookups, the heater is to ensure you can still do hot washes.

This is the second last series of the Aussie made BD Whirlpools. The very last was the 22XX series in 1980.

Cheers

Nathan

Nice machine.  We had a U.S. 1976  set that had the same type trim and styling.

It would be interesting to see the water heater.   That was such a good idea.  Putting the heat right where it is needed.  No waste.

Nice feature! A very interesting machine! What is the wattage of the heating element, do you know?

just FYI - 2400 watts is the max load for a standard Australian power point.

240 Volts x 10 Amps = 2400 Watts

I believe max load is 13 amps in UK and 15 amps in Europe, right?

I remember reading in Choice in the 1970s that Bendix at the time got caught fitting a standard 10 amp Aussie plug to washing machines with a 15 amp load.

I thought the max. in Australia was 10 Amps. The max. in Europe is 16 Amps. With 230 Volts, that makes 3680 Watts.

I assume the heating element is at the bottom, under the tub? Another assumption, I guess the timer is stopped by the thermostat for heating and after the selected temperature has been achieved, the timer is activated again? That means no agitation during the heating process?

UK Loading

I think the max for the UK is 3200. My Phaff Iron is 3200 Watts and its always worked with out blowing a fuse

Control Panels from Heaven

mickeyd's profile picture

Got the magnifier out and it looks like medium is the longer word in the selections. Has to be a record for the number of temps offered--NINE ! Think the words above the temp buttons must be fabrics, etc. Wish we could read it, esp. the main control--just look at all the stuff over there. Said it many times before: Just like all the unique flora and fauna Down Under, The Aussies have the coolest control panels. OOOOOOOOOh to send it over.

Hi Louis,

You're correct. The element is a round circle under the basket.

The machine would fill with water and then heat until the thermostat was satisfied. Once it gets to temp the cycle proceeds as it would for any BD whirlpool.

The manual references adding the detergent during filling to try and dissolve it, so you dont then end up with clumps of detergent sitting on the clothes during the heating/soaking period.

On this model the temperature selections also set the wash and spin speeds. Thats why there are so many buttons with overlapping temps.

Chris, Choice also slammed Miele in the late 70's for shipping a plugless UK variant dishwasher that needed 13 amps, the were up in arms that there was no warning about needing a 15 amp circuit for the machine and that most people would've just fitted a 10amp plug.

That's even better.  A soak then wash.  And you wouldn't need a separate circuit for the water heater.

How is everything going? How are your Mieles behaving? Any luck with any vintage ones on ebay. Found a 34 year old G 560 dishwasher on ebay in excellent condition, I was tempted.
