WOW... this little thing that started out as Jon (Jetcone) coming by to see my collection.... turned into a full blown WASH-IN with 50 people coming from all over the US and Canada!!!!

I want to thank EVERYONE who took the time to make their way to my house for the wash-in!  THANK YOU!

But I especially have to thank, first and foremost, Kelly (Mixfinder) for coming down not only to attend, but to help with ALL of the food!   Kelly, I appreciate you more then you can possibly know!    Your incredible culinary expertise, tireless energy and absolutely amazing ability to produce not only fantastic flavor and quality, but the sheer volume of food, cookies, pies, cakes and bread just blew me away!   THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH!

I also MUST thank everyone that came by on Thursday and Friday to not only help me set up and get ready, but also offered to work on machines and jumped right in..... so thank you VERY much to Ralph, Gordon, Drew, Tim, John & Jeff Lefever, Cal, Nate and Justin.  (If I got for someone, please forgive my memory).

As I was busy being "the host" I didn't get a lot of photos, but I did get a few.   So I will ask that all of you who attended, please share your photos here!

OK I will start off with the photos I have.......

Here are a couple from Friday.   John Lefever working on my 69 Lady K combo trying to get it going.  After cleaning and adjusting, it needs a sump to pump hose... but he said it's in excellent condition otherwise.  YAY!

By the way, do you remember this 1957 Westinghouse Spacemate washer I brought home November of last year?

Thanks to the efforts of Tim, John, Jeff, Nate & Cal, this Westinghouse Spacemate NOW LIVES AGAIN!!!!

It had a seized motor, a seized pump, a bad drain solenoid, tub boot (as you saw above) and a weak door seal.

So here it is now actually washing a load!

I am SO JAZZED about this!   THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!

Gonna post some vids, beware the audio is horrible!

1st up the SQ roar. This is the machine that was found in the Fresno junkyard by John and Smitty and that me and Kevin picked up in December 2010. Some other shots too like the vomiting Neptune.

Also before the wash-in so much work went into so many machines. One very special machine was Andy's (Redcarpetdrew) 1966 Lady (&^%$#) Kenmore. He has other nice words for her, but this machine was reborn just a day before the event. I hope Andy is very proud of this machine, I know I would be. Gordon and Andy worked for HOURS on this machine well into the night.

Here is the 1st water test after reassembly, it really was amazing to see how far this machine has come.

And walking around like a zombie. I sat next to someone on the plane who needed a seatbelt extension. When I choose my seat I thought "time to get back to sitting next the window" as after all, commercial aviation is a hobby as near and dear as washers to me. Sitting on a non-stop L.A. to Charlotte Airbus feeling like my left shoulder was going to squeeze through the gap between the seat and the sidewall, about all I could move was my left eyeball.

So I've been home for several hours, checked the site twice, and here now as I stagger to bed I see that a lousy pic of me has been the last thing posted on the Imperial forum for over an hour. UGH...!

What an awesome time we all had. Kevin, you are a great host. I always enjoy seeing you - you are one of the many treasures that AW.org has afforded us.

Andy, I am THRILLED that you are so happy with your machine and that it came out so well. Listening to our conversation on Tim's video of the water test on the Lady reminds me how much we laughed the last few days. How awesome is that?!

Tim - I had no idea you were recording all that. Good for you! Your skills with those little twin tubs amazes me. What can I say about the Penta-hat?

Kelly, it was great to meet you. It's been said before, but WOW, thank you for the tremendous food. It was a real treat.

I won't soon forget this trip for many reasons. But, Kevin, you may want to bleep out the conversation on the web cam (if it was recorded) when we start talking about the little wringer washer. NOT a conversation for younsters!!! L O L

Thanks again everyone!

Gordon

Gordon, get over yourself. You look very nice, if a little sleepy.

I'm sorry I couldn't make it, would have dearly loved to be there... Especially to see the 63 Turquoise (not light blue) Kenmore 70 being worked on (I grew up with the coppertone version of the same... ).

Then again, you all were spared the sad puppy dog looks of me watching you all eat bread and pie and cake. (No gluten for me in the last 3.5 years... )

Cheers, all. I enjoyed the pictures and vid.

Another grand time was had by all, thanks Kevin for inviting us all worldwide, the web cam was great, although due to time difference here I saw the beginning and the wind down just as most people where leaving...LOl

Gordon I saw the bit at the end when Tim was demonstrating the wringer washer near the camera, the sound was not on all the time and adds kept interupting play but it looked like lots of fun - so spared your blushes...LOl

Kevin, was trying to find out what the front loader was with the top off, I thought it was a spacemate but then knew for sure when the solenoid went of with a bang, as we had picked one up over here and have been repairing it - why do they make them soooo noisy!!!

What powder was in the Maytag FL that made it oversudz?? and how was Rosalies received??

Cheers, Mike

That said, I gotta tell ya, I laughed long and hard at the "wringer" conversation at the end of the night. Tim, I thought you'd never get those shop towels wrung out!

Looked a helluva party. Woo-hoo for wash-ins!

Washers and more...

Kevin,

Thanks for hosting the wonderful western Wash-In.  And a big thanks to Kelly for the unbelievable spread of endless food.  I had a really great time with so many interesting people.  The best part for me was meeting people with such a variety of related cross-interests: random collectible appliances, classic architecture, cars, art, and vintage design & engineering in general.  This could have gone an entire weekend (and for some it did).

Well done, everyone !

Pete.

mickeyd's profile picture

The Rotoflex movie. You're all standing around talking then debating the water level, and I'm shouting at the screen begging Andy to plug it in and getting Gordon to put the dial in the dead zone setting we were all talking about the other day, and get that Lady stroking at a low water level. What fun! Water boarding anyone?

Great to see everyone. Thanks. Wish I could have been there too!

I'm posting from the ever so tiny keyboard on my iPhone but after reading all the great posts wanted to respond.

I had a GREAT time. Kevin, it was THE event of 2012. I have pictures and will post at a later time.

It was so great to meet people from AW in person and the connection we all have here is so awesome.

My fun continues on as I sit here in Palm Springs and reflect on the great memories created from this event.

Wow

It is always so much fun to follow a wash-in, and I'm sure even more fun for those attending.

Reviewing this event brought back all the feels and excitement from when I participated in the MN event at Robert and Fred's a few years back.

Hi to all of you I met then and good for you for attending another one of these incredible gatherings .... and in CA which is always great fun.

For those who attended, keep posting pics as I intend to milk this one for days.

Very cool appliance store on 4th St and.........

revvinkevin's profile picture

The PINK Maytags in the window of that appliance store on 4th St are display only.   I contacted the owner or manager(?) a couple years ago and they said the pink set is "not for sale" period.

~ Jon, so tell us.... have you bought that stove yet?   It IS really something, isn't it?  Smile

I neglected to mention before that not only did Gordon, Andy and John L. do a bearing replacement job (and more) on my '63 Kenmore 70 (THANK YOU again!!!), but Gordon and Andy also did a bearing job and basket drive replacement on Andy's beautiful coppertone 1966 Lady K washer, IN ADDITION to a bearing job on a friends turquoise twin to Andy's washer, another 1966 Lady K!   So not just one, not two, but THREE Kenmore bearing jobs in two days!  WOW!

The Big Spring Wash-In while a lot of work, was SO much fun and SO worth it because of it!    I am very honored that SO MANY travelled from across the U.S. and Canada to be here for the Wash-In.    It was so wonderful to meet everyone I hadn't and see friends again.    I cannot express my gratitide enough to EVERYONE who came by to help set up, clean up and work on various machines before, during and after the party.   From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

That is still too funny... but you are gonna get slapped next time I see you!  Tongue out   OK, maybe not slapped, just hugged.  Kiss

And to think Jon, this whole Wash-In is ALL YOUR FAULT!   But then again, I'm glad is I had a great time!

It was a wonderful time at Kevin's! Back to Reno today so some pictures tonight or tomorrow! Now I get to shoot video of the 66 in action. Well, once I repair what Jon did to her! Hhhmmmmm, what DID I do with that duct tape?

And of course, there was the Queen Mary. Super cool preserv

Just thought I put a plug out there, since ocean liners are my primary hobby (though washers/ dryers are in the spotlight at the moment), I'm glad to hear several of you were able to visit and stay on the QM. She is an amazing time capsule! Completed in 1936 ... she was Britain's Art deco masterpiece. .. and one of the most beloved ocean liners of all time.
However, being American, my favorite ship was our flagship, the SS United States. She was completed in 1952, and was the fastest liner ever constructed. There is current grassroots movement to save The SS United States ... and you can read more about that here: www.ssunitedstatesconservancy.org.... She is currently berthed in Philadelphia, Pa (near the Walt Whitman bridge).
Just to keep this washer related, The SSUS did have Westinghouse Laundromats onboard ... and I will try to find a picture and post of one that I found abandoned on her foredeck when I visited her in 1991. They were very similar to the laundromat Kevin has in his outstanding collection!

It was great to meet everyone and put faces to names and handles! Just got home nice quick flight back to Boston. Off to bed!

Jeff you take such nice pics! I hope Kevin you and Andy can repair the damaged Kenmores. John has parts!!

We didn't ask about the stove but I did love it, there was no one there, it says on the door call for an appointment and its kind of odd because its a vintage appliance store with a used book store.

Kelly I can still taste that lasagna and Greg and I loved our cakes, (well actually Greg loved my cake!! )

The Aroma

I was honored that Kevin let me crash his party and act as surrogate partner. Its difficult to manage the projects, people and sheer square footage of his property before, during and after the wash in and I didn't want him to feel alone. I enjoy the preparations as much as the party and for the days ahead got to feed and kibitz with the working crew that put the machines and basement in showroom order. For some of us the delight is in machines and engineering, the thrill of the hunt finding a sought after machine, repair and restoration, some make it all about the laundry and while I like it all,  I savor the connections and friendships. I held court in the kitchen, entertained by Kevin's father Lloyd with his rapier wit and joy of lexicon, feeding  dog treats and belly rubs to Westie in trade for floor clean up and enjoyed the joyful banter of the men gathering around the table for grub. Kevin has every pot, pan, toy and tool for cooking making the time there joyful. He has a Miele convection oven which bakes like nothing I have ever used, pure perfection. There was a vintage dual fuel Modern Maid wall oven that ran hot but was great for biscuits and roasted leg of Pork. While I wouldn't choose a gas cook top, the GE gas did a fine job and I managed not to burn anything. Kevin is every bit as kind and loving as he appears in the posts and gave so much in time and expense to make this all happen to say nothing of taxiing us all to and from the airport. I have long enjoyed a friendship with Ralph and was thrilled he arrived early. Ralph was tremendous help, willing to do anything, making at least 12 Home Depot and store runs and being a wonderful loving presence. Tim is nothing short of amazing, his Kentucky drawl pours out like rich molasses and his mind is rapier fast with solutions and innovation for repair problems. His bedroom was the pull out in the family room which meant he was the last one to get to bed and the first one roused in the morning. Andy.......How do you describe Andy......funny, amazingly insightful, he misses nothing, sees everything and seems to possess the wisdom of the ages. I was so glad to meet him and appreciated his concern for my welfare making sure I got to enjoy the party. You've got to love a man who brings you a Mixmaster to use since carry on wasn't big enough to bring one. Gordon was totally on point, serious about his work, watching his diet and delightfully funny in his taciturn way. It was pure joy to watch Justin love on his Unimatic. I almost offered to carry it back to Tucson for him knowing how hard it is to have a new toy and not be able to have it home. It was so fun to see his serious demeanor split wide open and a fun loving kid come bounding out. For those of you who haven't met Roger you are missing being in the presence of a real hero and giant among men. I was so touched by his care and kindness in Tucson and delighted to see him again. Nate could be a runner up in the sweet competitions and good to see him happy and thriving in his marriage with David. Nothing really prepares you for meeting the LeFever brothers. You might get the impression from John's cryptic assessments of lesser machines that he would be stern and nothing could be further from the truth. Jeff and John are so much fun, interesting and have the wealth of generations to share about machines and repair. I nearly swooned when I met Cal, perhaps the most perfect example of southern gentility and breeding and so very interesting to visit with. Smitty was happily touring car shows and looking for the holy grail of car part collections, funny and bright, long suffering as he napped on the couch waiting for John to say his final good byes. Its not really fair to say and perhaps its because I have spent more time with him but Greg and Omaha have become a favorite place to visit and catch up with his son Skyler and Greg’s family and friends. I always have such a good time and love Greg's self effacing humor and rolling laugh. When Kevin told me Robert and Fred were coming I asked him if there was time to lose 20 pounds, get a tan and go to the gym in preparation for the grand PooBah of all washerdom. For those of you who haven't been lucky enough to meet Robert and Fred they are two of the nicest, most patient and surely most beleaguered of us all administering the business of running each club. It was so good to see them. I was nervous a bit about Jon Charles, wondering if he would be approachable or a true Bostonian Blue Blood with a bit of reticence for the wild men of the West. Every worry melted with the first hug and hello and I quickly fell under the spell of his humor and good looks. It was fun to make special cakes for the birthday boys and I enjoyed catching up with Rich again after meeting in 2005. Dick Stevenson has been to Washington and we have shared machines and parts so it was fabulous to see him and meet Chris who was so interesting and such a nice man. Brad Ross came on Friday with his cousin Jill and I was enthralled with them both. Jill was wonderful help in the kitchen and it was fun to have close banter and support while working. I love Patrick from Portland and from him have heard so much about Eddy from Canada. Patrick made sure I got out of the house on Friday and we toured the shops on Retro Row and did some junking. I had no idea how much fun Eddy would be. I loved his stories and laughed hard at his work escapades. I look forward to some international visits ahead with Ross and Eddy. During Saturday's dinner I had a delicious time visiting with Anthony and Daryl in the kitchen and after the melee subsided we went downstairs to splash in the machines. What truly wonderful men they are.  I love recapping an event and I get a surge of energy after the work is done and I know I made it. Andy, Tim and I ruminated on the events of the days and shared our take and insights on the event. Reluctantly we went to bed at 1:30 not wanting the day to end. Sunday morning dawned and I bounded out of bed to make cinnamon rolls and breakfast for those who came by to load up their treasures. Then it was all over. Four days of short nights and long days took their toll and I kept feeling a nap attacking me. We put machines away, sealed up the collection, did the entire house hold laundry and I read each section of the Sunday paper as Lloyd finished. It was my idea of a perfect time. I hate to sit still but don't really want to break a sweat either so keeping busy, loving what I do, loving the people and the anticipation of who I was cooking for, doing my part to relieve one small part of the stress for Kevin was pure joy. I am home and mourning the end of such perfect weekend. I enjoyed meeting everyone, loved the time to connect with new and old and truly apologize if I overlooked anyone in taking the risk of mentioning names.

Thanks Kelly for painting the scene, thats what these gatherings are all about, they go far to quickly and its a vital part of any washparty that the washer workers and guests are nurtured and all get to enjoy....its a scene I`ve witnessed Terry perform perfectly as well as Alistair over here...AND gives the host the chance to entertain and flit around!!!

NOWTHEN - the videos on webcam are showing more people than we`ve seen (lovely as you all are) any more pics please...Lol

Oh Tim, any more twinny pics & what was the washer next to the Maytag and guys, what type of boot did you use on the Westy or was it repaired and if so with what??

Cheers, Mike

Kelly thanks again for all you did to make this event the new standard of Wash-Ins and your summery of the event was a great way to savor the fun a little longer,   Thank You.

Mike the boot we installed on the Westinghouse 25" Space Mate was a correct new in box part, while these boots are long ago NLA there still seem to be a few around. They are not the correct ones for the full sized slant front washers but some people have been able to get them to fit.

Hi Mike,

If you are referring to the photo in reply #77... the machines in the photo, front to back are: the Maytag A50 twin tub, next is a 1971 GE (Hitachi built) automatic, portable washer, the 1970 Hoover 0515 and finally in the back, the 1959 Maytag E2LP wringer.

I hope this helps!

Alas, I forgot my camera.  I'm glad that so many others didn't.

This was one of the most fun weekends I've spent in a long time.  It was great to meet so many people and also pass along some gadgets, parts and literature that I brought down for the taking.  It was satisfying to help bring the shine back to the finish on the Westy Spacemate and to later see it quietly and happily tumbling laundry once again.  I think it's safe to say that little machine stole the show.  The look of satisfaction and captivation on Andy's face as he was completely won over by the silky smooth operation of his 46-year old Lady Kenmore was priceless.  Gordon managed to sway the Maytag Man over to his side, which is quite an accomplishment.

Kevin was a great host and I was happy to help in any way I could during the days leading up to the event.  Kelly's production line in the kitchen was non-stop and awe-inspiring.  Never once did I see him referring to a recipe.  He had four cakes baked, frosted and decorated in the time it would take me to produce one completely unreasonable facsimile.  His post above does a beautiful job of capturing the teamwork and comraderie that characterized the event.  Kelly, I hope I didn't inconvenience you too much while tackling that job under the kitchen sink!

With this one being my first wash-in, there's no room to question the fact that it won't be my last.

Great photo of Gordon and the '63 70series. That series does seem to be a favorite of several people. (Mine, for one, although they just HAVE to be the coppertone ones).

{Ironically, I remember them better than my parents do, ALTHOUGH Dad did confirm that they were bought on sale at Sears in 64, when they were living in Mundelein, IL... and brought to Brookfield, WI in 66, when they bought the house where they still currently live. I felt pretty proud to have correctly identified them from the photos...)

Hmm...sketti casserole....

kenmoreguy64's profile picture
Well, since we were on a parts run that benefitted both Andy's '66 AND your '63 Kev, I'm going to feel only so bad...lol. That parts run was all my idea, btw, and I AM going to take credit due, :-)

Had I made the casserole when we got back, we'd have eaten at 9:30pm (too late for this puppy - at least for tomato based dinners).

BUT, all that said, if you want to reprise our gathering, I promise next time to stay home from the parts run and we can eat at 6pm that way.

Shall we have party numero deux? I'll finish the '63....

GE Combos

combo52's profile picture

Oh Jon,  When asking questions of the greatest appliance expert known first thing to remember is to get your basic facts correct. Kevin's GE combo is a 1959-60 model, yours is a 1964 machine, in 1964 they redesigned the machines and went to a reversing main motor. Your machine and all GE combos till the end in 1972 washed and rinsed CW and spun and drained and dried CCW. Kevin's combo does all operation CCW.

How would you rate the overall quality of the post-64 brick?

I didn't peep inside the drum of the GE combo, just figured it was the same as the later ones. But it's not! Does it still have the six-vane drum? (For "Piece by Piece" washing action)

Greg, GE combos went from the 4 vane drum to the 6 vane drum when they changed from the machine with the tranny to the machine with the variable sheave pulley system as a speed changer in the late mid 50s. I believe it is safe to say that if it has a squared corner cabinet, it has a 6 vane drum. The combo with the tranny extracted between water changes instead of just after the last rinse.

They may have fought, but Gordon had the patience of a saint and the persistance of a Kirby salesman. One by one, he beat encouraged them to come back to life. One by one, they were wet tested.  In the end, Kevin's still had a small leak off the front of the platform but was massively improved with a quiet spin and almost no leaks. Not bad for a washer that, according to Gordon, had almost everything down below already replaced including a trans with fast brake. John worked on Mike's turquoise 66 LKM which also needed bearings and also actually ended up getting a donor transmission. Here we see it getting the water test. We ended up having a winner.

It was wonderful to see you all and, OMG! Kelly, you have serious skills in the kitchen and you were such a treat to talk with. Your caring manner and devotion to your cooking was just awesome. You told me that your cooking is your way of showing your love. We all felt well loved! Gordon, thank you again for taking the time to teach me. I will always value our time on the Kenmores. Tim, you are simply wonderful with how you repaired and improvised to get the Westinghouse going along with so many others who sweated over it. To all the others who helped and visited, thank you for making my experience so memorable. Kevin, that was the first vacation I've taken in almost 2 years, what with all of Jacqui's health issues and my broken femur. Thanks for being the perfect host.

Interesting fact is that I remember most of the captured pictures while watching them being taken during the live camera event.

The Big Winner

Thank you to everyone who posted pictures and comments regarding the West Coast wash in.  Being with people and cooking are two of my biggest thrills and the wash in served them up in spades.  I never look at cooking as work and have long wished there was a way to cook and then have it disappear before I had a chance to eat it.  Kevin's kitchen and his equipment provided everything I needed.  It was nice to sit after dinner and watch Gordon skillfully take over dishwasher duty and slick up the kitchen.  The commaraderie that formed around Kevin's table in the days before the wash in was pure joy and Saturday's gathering was the frosting on the cake.  It was rewarding to be in the kitchen and listen to the many conversation floating around.  Some of the guests are friends of Kevin apart from the washer group and it was clear he is special in their eyes and much loved.  I just galvanizes my desire to attend and support more gatherings and grow into the deeper friendships that come with being together.

Is it Dead Yet?

macboy91si's profile picture

Hell no!

It has taken me a while to get around to posting anything worthwhile here, I lost my camera and have really had to hit the ground running with work since I've been back.

Well it was a blast! I offered to help Kevin get some machines going for the party, which seemed to keep growing. Between my absolute LACK of focus and realizing that some of the machines needed quite a bit of attention, I set out to do what I could.

This is what I was presented with upon arrival...

There was this poor, tired Maytag DG608 dryer that "needed a blower wheel".... Yeah right!

This machine was a victim of my ADHD, but it's lack progress gave way to other great things. I think at some point I ended up wearing parts of it?

Dear DG606, I'm sorry :(

I was led to this. It looks like the Unimatic had been drinking again. Here she is flat-faced on the floor after peeing all over the place...

Awww it's so Cute

macboy91si's profile picture

One of the things I said I would do for Kevin is get one of the A-50's going. I brought a diverter valve with me and set out to fix the little guy from our last washer party, in which it got a very interesting modification that warranted it's ow instruction manual.

One of these has a bad bearing somewhere in it, so it is giving up extra parts to the other.

Waiting for the transplants...

The new diverter plunger next to the rotted plunger. Word to the wise, flush your A-50 out after use!

New out of the package thanks to John Lefever's stash-o-parts...

All Buttoned Up

Everything went together nicely, thanks to the parts machine. Only thing left to do now is water test and adjust the plunger cable to keep air out.

Thank you so much for opening your home and sharing your love of washer's with all of us. This was my first official wash-in and I had a great time.

It was so much fun to put screen names and pictures with the actual person in the flesh! I met so many great people. These are times in life to remember fondly.

Thank You,

Patrick

Patrick, I'm really pleased you came down for the wash-in and it was really GREAT to meet you!    THANK YOU for posting your photos!

Sorry we didn't make it over to the Queen for Brunch on Sunday!  We had to finish cleaning up, do laundry and move machines around in the garage so I could get the cars back in.

After that we just needed a quiet and relaxing as we were all exhausted!

Overall I had a really great time and it was all worth it!

Kevin

I ended up pulling in the photos tonight--I have over 134, so I decided to use Flickr, rather than go piecemeal. I have yet to tag them, but at least you can get started perusing pics and movies. The rest of the movies are uploading to YouTube, and need to be tagged as well--a project for tomorrow night :-)

Thanks for taking the time to post them, Nate.  Now you can go back to your studying . . .
