![]() This story begins on January 16th about 10PM. Just a few hours before, I had purchased a 1949 WP dryer (my second vintage laundry machine) from Bygted. On TV, Family Guy has just ended and I'm getting ready to head off to bed (tomorrow is my birthday) ... when I hear the ding on the computer that announces "I got mail" ....
Much to my surprise, it's the nicest note from AW.org member Lebron (Jed) congratulating me on the dryer purchase from Ted ... and asking if I'd be interested in purchasing the MATCHING WP washer w/ suds saver? So after a quick change of underpants, I email Jed back to say ... of course I am interested ... and would love to hear details about the machine and see some pics. Within minutes, Jed shares AW archive thread 20440.. and we seal a deal! So now after a few months of planning where/ when to meet to make the exchange ... we worked with Robert and Fred to meet at their place in Minneapolis this past weekend. So fast forward to my arrival in Minneapolis this past Friday about 8PM. I quickly find the house (there is a truck parked across the street with a washer in the bed) ... and within minutes I'm meeting 3 really great guys! After about an hour of introductory chit chat ... we are off on the tour ... Vintage everything everywhere! Fred has an amazingly displayed collection of Vacuums that occupy a spare bedroom and upstairs hallway space. I have never seen so many Hoover's in one spot in my life! I quickly find my Nanny's machine in the Hoover gallery ... as well as the Rainbow my mom had while I was growing up. What fun! It was then off to the basement ... Jed in the lead with a HUGE basket of laundry destined to be split between the 2nd model GE automatic and radiantly glowing 57 pink LK. While we started those 2 loads of wash ... Robert and Fred made laundry magically appear that went into the FASCINATING APEX (must find one) as well as an early Frigidare (also very cool). I ran out to the rental van and brought in some extra packing blankets .. and soon had them loaded into the Whirlpool combo and Norge timeline. It is pretty cool watching each unique machine operate ... especially that darn APEX "gettin jiggy with it" (loved the fluff cycle) ... all the while Robert explaining each movement of the machine and what is happening with the mechanicals. Who ever thought doing so much laundry could be this much fun!!!!! Unfortunately, 2AM rolled around pretty quickly, and we all bleary eyed head off to bed. 7am the next morning saw me up, showering and doing the final tie down and packing of the 1950 WP (now affectionally named Winifred / Winnie). I finished that about 8AM, as the rest of the house started to stir and get ready for their exciting day of estate sales (see AW thread 40030). After a few hugs and good byes I was headed back east toward home ... arriving at my place about 10PM for an 8 hour sleep in with 2 purring cats. Up the next morning ... the WP is unloaded into the garage ... (enjoy the pics) and I am headed back to the Apartment in Chicago for a week of work in the city. More to come this weekend when I am back home and can fire Winnie up in the garage! Hehehe. Jed ,Robert and Fred .. I can't thank you enough for the great visit!

It was great to meet you Scott, I'm glad you got the Whirlpool home safe and sound.
As for the Lady Kenmore, she needed a new pump, she was getting bogged down during the spray rinses and couldn't remove the water with the basket spinning. After Jed and I replaced it the Lady was much happier. I gave Jed his choice of agitators, there were lots to choose from, but the white Super-Surgilator it was!

Through the pump door ...![]() I didn't have time to move the wp into the basement this past weekend ... so hope to do that this weekend. I did take her for a test drive .. and she works really well... and so quiet. Here is a picture of the internals throught the pump door ... look at the gleaming mechanicals! I do have to repair the pump hose.

1949-50 WP Automatic Washer![]() Glad you got this machine Scott, I can't wait to see it sometime. I am starting the reassembly of my very similar 1952 WP washer. The pump in your picture is the Suds-Miser return pump, I just finished glass beading the same pump at Smittys shop for my washer. It scares me when I think how rare some of these parts are as I am doing this restoration. Post more pictures, John

My Gig![]() Ha... I do travel a lot with work ... I project manage architecture and design projects.
I also like to hop in the car and drive, so I can plan mini weekend trips around a washer (or other) fun purchase. I have been so lucky to find the machines I have so far ... it has all been good luck and goodwill. I just really need a few more machines to fill the gaps. Once I reach my maximun ... I'll use the Robert rule ... one comes in, one goes out. I have to say, so far everyone from the club has been great to meet and very helpful ... especially loud and clear thanks to Gordon, John, Graham, Jed, Robert, Fred and Ted. scott

Can't wait to see the suds-miser working.![]() Is this the model where the lid pops and the buzzer sounds when the load is done?
As a kid, the guy across the street used to wash on Thursday nights in this very machine--give or take a year or two. On his, the W in the middle lit up. This is the machine that hooked me forever on suds-returns and spray rinses. Scott, I couldn't get enough of his Pool, and completely understand how you're smitten with it.

I can't say Thanks to Jed enough for offering her to me!![]() Scott, I cant tell you happy I am for you and to see the Whirlpool up on here getting some much needed attention!
Having used this machine as a daily driver for a small period... never once did it cycle buzz or have the lid pop open. Then again I never had the lid closed. The timer motor is easy to access on this machine. If you look in the archives you will find a thread where I go "under the hood". Gl!

Unfortunately, the guy at the part store looked at me like I had 3 eyes and nose warts when I told him I needed a suds ruturn house for a 1950 Whirlpool. He did have mico fische that went back that far ... but no luck on the part I was after .. I guess I have to be creative. =)

![]() Wow - I was re-reading this thread 'cause I have the 'Kenmore cousin' version of this washer now, so I thought I might get some service ideas... About the hose, you might scare one up at a thrift store like Salvation Army or Goodwill (I have found a number of replacements that way) and you can probably substitute a later version. I don't know a great deal about suds saver machines, but I remember the Inglis (Canadian Whirlpool) washer at a friends house had the suds saver feature and the suds return hose seemed to be a regular drain hose with a rigid section about a foot long with a bias-cut end (it looked like it had been cut to use as a spear!). The long-end hooked over the laundry tub and I guess the cut end allowed it to rest on the tub without blocking the the hose opening. I am going to need one of these myself, and if I can find anything that might work for you, I'll pick it up! I think making a substitute one may be the way to go.... Last thought - if you have a used-appliance dealer (or dealers) nearby, check with them. They sometimes keep spare parts that have now gone out of current use.. First one to get their suds-saver hooked up and running wins! LOL
