I'm sure this washer is from the early 80s, despite its "2000" name and super cool computer-letter font... Anyways, the washer fills, agitates for a few minutes then stops. It appears the timer isn't moving. If I push it ahead a little, it will agitate some more, but won't drain or spin. A weak trickle of water will come out of the drain hose.

I pushed the knob through the cycles (very gently) in the hopes it might drain, but while doing that I heard an electrical "pop", then saw/smelled a little smoke.

Obviously something fried in there. If I could fix this thing just dealing with the control panel end of it, I would. If I have to get into the pump/trans/etc. I won't bother.

Any thoughts? Has anyone ever had this "stops agaitating" issue?

Does sound like a timer issue - popping noises and smoke is not normal.  You may be able to get a rebuilt timer from Midwest Timer Service in Michigan.
