Is $45.00 plus shipping too much to pay for a brand new, never used Maytag wringer adgitator? Thanks for your opinions. Gary |

When I saw the nest of brand new, in the wrap agitators the other day, I thought, Gosh, 30 years old and still NIB, at 45 apiece. What a deal. The man selling them is an honest older man, I believe. Also, and we can ask John, new agitators list at 80 to 100 bucks, if I'm not mistaken. Wish they had them in red, lol. This is from the Maytag guy in Ovid NY who sells his stuff on ebay, right? |

Thanks so much guys, The ad is on Ebay. I have a 1954 Commander with a red adgitator and don't want to ruin it so I but the one in my 1973 Master and use it. These for sale are originals from the Maytag factory in Newton and have never been used. Thanks a lot. Gary |

Local NY "Maytag" man has an upstanding reputation that speaks volumes.
His prices are fair for the items and what is more the man stands behind his merchandise. You *may* be able to find someone else selling NIB Maytag items elsewhere but you pays your money and takes your chances. No telling how the thing will be packed/shipped and if it arrives damaged good luck with some of today's eBay sellers getting a response. Also unlike many other eBay sellers the NY Maytag may *knows* what he's got and will happily advise you on your purchase. This is much better than "I've got this Maytag item. Don't know much about it, found it in the basement of a house we just bought. Item being sold as-is....". |

I got my new adgitator from the man in Ovid, NY. It has a plastic spline in it. Is that good or bad? I just put it in my machine and fits tightly; so tightly that it was difficult to remove. I hope this will be ok. Gary |

Geoff D always recommended a light coating of vaseline. Just checked one of mine: it has a plastic spline too. Were any of the originals plastic, or must this one be a replacement too? It's the one that was in the machine when I got it. So far, haven't had any trouble with it. Interesting. Maybe Jim (wringer) who commented above will have more info on this. |

I don't know the exact date, but sometime in '66 or '67 the wringer agitators received the same integral splines that the automatics did. The automatics used the same metal spline as the wringers through till 1967 when the original baffle style agitator was removed from the automatics. Again I'd have to check the doctrine to see exactly when this was done for the wringers. I prefer the integral, or plastic splines, purely from the perspective that they won’t seize to the agitate shaft. If your plastic splined agitators are noisy it is time to replace the stop ring before the splines within the agitator go bad. Both the metal and plastic splines should be somewhat tight and require a good tug to remove the agitator if the stop ring is still holding the agitator in place. I did have some vaseline on the adgitate shaft. I guess it will be ok though? The only reason that I bought a new one was that the 1954 Commander has a red bakelite adgitator; I didn't want to ruin it so I bought a new one for that machine. Love these Maytags. Thanks, Gary |

People think wringers are dead, and here The Amish have a veritable factory of Maytags. How telling. If the economic cataclysm comes to pass, in time, people will be begging for a wringer instead of a washboard.
Is this the first time you mentioned this, Jim? What is the address? Thanks. I wonder how many other wringer factories are out there? Lots of provocative meditations today! |
