Is $45.00 plus shipping too much to pay for a brand new, never used Maytag wringer adgitator? Thanks for your opinions. Gary

It seems

that around $45 is the going rate for an aftermarket Maytag Wringer Agitator. They are not made by Maytag anymore. I bought one of them but only used it once. The spline in them is plastic and it makes a noise as the agitator reverses directions. I didn't like that so had a new metal spline put in my old one. It is as quiet as a mouse. It seems that there is to much "play" in the plastic splines. I prefer metal. I have a great source of parts/repair for my Maytag Wringers so a new spline was just a trip to the shop for me. They don't even carry plastic agitator splines where I go. Good Luck.

Jim

I agree with Jim. I don't think you'll find a new one any cheaper. There are often used ones on eBay that go for less, if you'd be satisfied with one.

Not at all, Gar

When I saw the nest of brand new, in the wrap agitators the other day, I thought, Gosh, 30 years old and still NIB, at 45 apiece. What a deal. The man selling them is an honest older man, I believe. Also, and we can ask John, new agitators list at 80 to 100 bucks, if I'm not mistaken. Wish they had them in red, lol. This is from the Maytag guy in Ovid NY who sells his stuff on ebay, right?

Thanks so much guys, The ad is on Ebay. I have a 1954 Commander with a red adgitator and don't want to ruin it so I but the one in my 1973 Master and use it. These for sale are originals from the Maytag factory in Newton and have never been used. Thanks a lot. Gary

$45 for a genuine Maytag agitator sounds like a pretty good deal, then, I think. Phil from Ovid, NY is a good guy.

It Isn't Just The Price, But Whom Is Doing The Selling

Local NY "Maytag" man has an upstanding reputation that speaks volumes.

His prices are fair for the items and what is more the man stands behind his merchandise.

You *may* be able to find someone else selling NIB Maytag items elsewhere but you pays your money and takes your chances. No telling how the thing will be packed/shipped and if it arrives damaged good luck with some of today's eBay sellers getting a response.

Also unlike many other eBay sellers the NY Maytag may *knows* what he's got and will happily advise you on your purchase. This is much better than "I've got this Maytag item. Don't know much about it, found it in the basement of a house we just bought. Item being sold as-is....".

Adgitator arrived

I got my new adgitator from the man in Ovid, NY. It has a plastic spline in it. Is that good or bad? I just put it in my machine and fits tightly; so tightly that it was difficult to remove. I hope this will be ok. Gary

HI GAR

Geoff D always recommended a light coating of vaseline. Just checked one of mine: it has a plastic spline too. Were any of the originals plastic, or must this one be a replacement too? It's the one that was in the machine when I got it. So far, haven't had any trouble with it. Interesting. Maybe Jim (wringer) who commented above will have more info on this.

I don't know the exact date, but sometime in '66 or '67 the wringer agitators received the same integral splines that the automatics did.  The automatics used the same metal spline as the wringers through till 1967 when the original baffle style agitator was removed from the automatics.  Again I'd have to check the doctrine to see exactly when this was done for the wringers.

I prefer the integral, or plastic splines, purely from the perspective that they won’t seize to the agitate shaft.  If your plastic splined agitators are noisy it is time to replace the stop ring before the splines within the agitator go bad.  Both the metal and plastic splines should be somewhat tight and require a good tug to remove the agitator if the stop ring is still holding the agitator in place.

HI Ben, Mick, everyone

I did have some vaseline on the adgitate shaft. I guess it will be ok though? The only reason that I bought a new one was that the 1954 Commander has a red bakelite adgitator; I didn't want to ruin it so I bought a new one for that machine. Love these Maytags. Thanks, Gary

Gary - I totally think you're on the right track by keeping the red bakelite out of daily use.

A little vaseline on the stop ring and shaft will help when removing your new agitator.

Enjoy!!

Ben

Hello

This is only my opinion from my experience with Maytag Wringer Washer Agitator splines. I DO NOT like the plastic ones because even when new they make a noise like a tic tock when the agitator reverses. The metal Agitator Splines do not make this noise since there is less play. I have an E that had the plastic spline but took it to the shop and had a metal one put in. It makes no noise at all now. I found a NOS aluminum agitator that I use in my E now. It doesn't do any better job cleaning the clothes but it is just different and I like it. I also have a J with the red agitator. I had a new spline put into it also. If you wipe it dry when done washing there is a bit of red residue that comes off on the cloth you use. I don't think it comes off in the wash water. I also put my red one up to save it. I really like the red but they are very old and the sealant that was put on them when made has long years ago come off while washing. I use a black plastic agitator with a metal spline in my J. So, all of my agitators have metal splines. All new after market ones will have plastic splines. My Maytag Wringers are all daily drivers so get used weekly. Happy Maytaging.

Jim

Forgot to say

that you should always use Vaseline on the washer and agitator splines. The metal ones stick if left on and not removed for long periods of time. The newer the O ring on the washer spline the harder the agitator will be to remove but that is not a problem at all. Just takes some strength. I never remove mine until the tub is empty so I don't splash water all over heck when the agitator snaps loose. You don't need much Vaseline. I use a bit on my finger each wash.

Ben and Jim

HI guys,Thanks for all of your help everyone. Ben, we are not that far apart. I am 70 miles east of the Quad Cities. I would love to see your collection some time.
Jim, How far are you from Columbus or Sydney, Ohio. I have friends at both places and he could take my adgitator to you to have a metal spline put in if you were willing to do that? Thanks, Gary

Hi Gary,

I am right in between Cols and Cleve, 70 miles to each and I don't know for sure how far I am from Sidney. The place I go is owned by the Amish and the only thing they do is restore Maytag Wringer Washers. They do a beautiful job on them and have more than hundreds of them setting around. They are a really nice Father/Son team and the 20 YO son does all of the restorations. I have a J from them that works and looks new, originally made in 65. It was the last model with the red trim and black agitator. I go down there often just to be around them. I call it Maytag Heaven. When they restore they totally take it apart piece by piece clean, service and paint in a paint booth. I would be happy to have a new spline put in your agitator for you. There may be a time span for this but I will get it done. They kind of give me a discount but they are cheap. Their prices for parts are the same as Phil's are but their labor is low. The cost of them putting in a new metal spline is cheaper than Phil wants for the spline itself. Let me know what you think about this. Happy Maytaging !!

Jim

I need to tell you that sometimes when they try to replace the spline in the red or black Bakelite agitators the agitator itself cracks when removing the old spline. I had a beautiful red one that this happened to. The metal and plastic agitators don't have this breaking problem.

Maytag Heaven--Great News--What a wonderful surprise!

mickeyd's profile picture

People think wringers are dead, and here The Amish have a veritable factory of Maytags. How telling. If the economic cataclysm comes to pass, in time, people will be begging for a wringer instead of a washboard.Wink

Is this the first time you mentioned this, Jim? What is the address? Thanks. I wonder how many other wringer factories are out there? Lots of provocative meditations today!

I have talked

extensively with Ted (Mr-Maytag) about my dealings with the Amish. I have picked out an N for them to restore for me. It has the very first red Maytag labels on it and they are still in perfect condition. I have seen it 3 times and still have not remembered to get the build date from the skirt. Next time for certain. It has a red agitator and I hope it won't split when they try to install a new metal spline. Next would be black Bakelite and if it splits then black plastic. I was there yesterday to have the new spline installed in black plastic agitator and they have not gotten to my N yet. They are way behind on their orders. A lot of people bring in old Maytag's to have them rebuilt and some of them are ahead of me. They told me I should have mine by mid June. It is well worth the wait since the totally take them apart bolt and nut, install new seals and grease and on and on. The name of the Place is Bunker Hill Appliance in Bunker Hill, Ohio which is a very tiny suburb of Berlin, Ohio which carry's a Millersburg, Ohio mailing address. I have no idea why all of the confusion of addy's but it is totally Amish Country. I have bought parts for other friends from them also. I also have purchased some parts from Phil in NY. I got my NOS aluminum agitator from Phil and bought a very nice black plastic one with a new spline from the Yoder's. The Yoder's are Mose and his son Myron. It is hard for me not to go down there every couple of weeks just to visit all of the old Maytag's. Always have to eat at my favorite restaurant also LOL. Mose has a new E2LS in the carton he bought years ago and told me it is part of his estate for his son Myron. Oh how I would love to get my hands on that and have a beauty to match Ted's. Don't be afraid to ask any questions about the Yoder's. They know I belong to this club and have made the club aware of them.

Jim
