Thats a good deal Barry, your new MT RR DW was made May of 1987, the pulley size was reduced to reduce NOISE, with the little jets MT never had trouble with things flying around. In fact On these DWs when you triple stack bowls often the center one won't get washed at all well because of the limited amount of water, I have never had any other DW leave things loaded this way unwashed. |

Ever notice the similarity among Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet, B-9 from Lost in Space, and TL washers? Robert Kinoshita is said to have designed clear demo washers before he designed Hollywood props. Looking quickly, haven't been able to verify or determine who he worked for. Sources indicate he's still alive at 98.

Other side of the coin and some would say driving demand are the scrap dealers who purchase things no or little questions asked. In regard to to the story told above, everyone was asking what sort of NY scap dealer would purchase ConEd manhole covers without asking questions?
Iron gates and fences that have stood in front of brownstone homes in Brooklyn and Manhattan for over one hundred years are suddenly gone. Coiled copper rolls from construction sites, and so forth. NYC supposedly has a recycling scheme, though doubt they make much from it as the scrappers are there before Sanitation. Indeed what is left is only their leavings. You've got persons renting trucks to drive around NYC streets taking bales of commercial paper and boxes, metals, appliances, whatever can be sold. Cans and bottles? Forget the odd homeless persons, they are being squeezed out by the big time Mexican and South Americans who have their "routes" down pat. They know the recycling days for each street and load up their minivan/rented truck with tons of cans and bottles. Sometimes there is so much "noise" from persons digging in the rubbish it sounds like a herd of giant rats. CLICK HERE TO GO TO Launderess's LINK |

I hate it when people scrap well made devices and things from the past that can be restored. They take the metal and turn it in to shoddy, cheaply made products that are disposable.
No more jobs for repair people, just throw everything away. Planned obsolescence; it makes me so angry. Between greedy corporations and stupid government regulations we've thrown it all away; no pun intended. I just talked to a lady today that runs a family owned parts and hardware store and she feels the same way. She is so cool. She is very knowledgeable about so many things to do with appliances, furnaces, plumbing and many other things. Her father opened the store years ago and when he died she carried on in his footsteps. I don't know many women that would do that. She's a delight to talk to. |

According to Abe, this Maytag wringer washer had only been used a few times. It does have some surface rust on the outside from when the owner had stored it in a garage for several years. |

This is a larger cabinet, and even dustier, than the Magnavox. that's a layer of dust on the perimeter of the CRT. The top of this TV is nice, it is meant to look like slate. |

It was a pleasure meeting Barry ay the store today. I'm sorry I was so rushed for time.
It was also a pleasure talking with Abe Lane. He was so excited to tell us about his life, secretly getting married when he was 17, being thrown out of his father-in-law's house by the seat of his pants when he finally told him he'd married his daughter, being drafted in WW II. I didn't hear how he came to be in the appliance business, but he had photos from dealer's meetings in Amana, Iowa, where the company brought in celebrities like Ernest Borgnine for rounds of golf; he had played in foursomes with Tom Watson and Julius Boros, and had pictures of that. He says he still exchanges Christmas cards with Ernest Borgnine. People of his generation, who started with nothing and had no advantages of advanced education, seem to me to be a whole lot happier than my angst-ridden generation. Maybe not having any choice but to get to work and keep at it no matter what is good for you; makes you appreciate what you've got instead of worrying about what you don't. He teared up a bit when talking about his wife, who died two years ago after 64 years (I think) of marriage, but he was mainly focused on how happy they were together and how proud he is of his children and grandchildren. The business is located next to what used to be a notorious den of prostitution and drug dealing, the Fifth Avenue Motel. It's now been cleaned up and gentrified, but I could see how he'd kept going there. He's just and honest guy who never cheated anyone and never thought about it. He must have had a bunch of loyal customers. Some notes about the appliances: The KA washer is a peach. I was kinda thinking about buying it if it was a belt drive, but is a direct-drive. It's a bit dusty outside, but nothing that wouldn't clean easily. The speckled porcelain tub is SPARKLING. The owner's manual and installation instructions are still there and sealed in the original plastic bags. There are two stacked units, a GE Spacemaker and a regular size Whirlpool. Both have gas dryers, which is probably why they didn't sell. Few people have gas dryer hookups in this area. There are two Neptunes which would be good buys. One of them was used one time by a city employee who dumped too much regular detergent in it, had a flood of suds, and returned it as defective! Other than still having some caked soap in the dispenser, it looks mint. Its one of the earlier models before the "humped" control panel, so it may have the wax motor and other known issues; I'm no expert in dating these. The other Neptune was used a little more and has something wrong with it, but I forget what. He wants $400 for the first and $200 for the other. He has a brand new Litton combination microwave/convection range (in white). It must be what, 25 years old? He said he sold a lot of them and he didn't know why they went out of business. There are boxes of parts in the basement including molded rubber hoses. I know these can sometimes be hard to find so it might be worth a call if you need something. |

Between the two of you, I'm sure the Jenn Air is in good hands.
I'm tempted by the KA washer, but have no room for more than one at a time, so this one would have to be fixed and ready to go into service immediately. Hypothetically, how hard is it to replace the fill solenoid on the KA washer, and is the part still available? Are NLA parts a problem for these machines? And what problems would I like I encounter trying to use a washer that has sat in a basement for 15-20 years? I remember Robert cautioning against treating unused old washers as if they could become daily drivers right off the bat. |

The inlet valve is still VERY available and cheap and there should be no problem pushing this washer into immediate service as it was so new when stored, it wouldn't have any problem with dry seals etc. This unique washer was only made for a year or so and few were sold, luckily all of the mechanical parts are just regular DD parts [ very reliable and easy to fix ] the problem is if you have any problem with the controls these parts are all NLA. We have an almond pair of these at our warehouse-museum that do work. It was an interesting idea to make an electro-mechaneally controlled washer and dryer so late in washer history. This was 1959 technology, WP had already been building electronically controlled washers and dryers for 10 years. I think that was an idea that came from someone from the Kitchen-aid side of things as these machines used a similar control system to the mechanical all push-button TOL KA Supbera DWs. |

With all this encouragement, I decided to take a shot at the KA washer and see if I can fix it.
Same problem in that I can't get thru to Joy and the store's landline has been disconnected. I work out of town so I can't go by until this weekend. I kind of doubt the windowed WP washer is gone. There didn't seem to be exactly a flood of customers there on Saturday. I will certainly be glad to check this weekend if nobody can get through until then. |

On first seeing it......interesting, where are the perforations in the tub? Well, it's a window. Then how do the tubs line up perfectly, after each spin to make the windows "work"? Are they engineered to do so, and I simply don't know enough?
No, silly, the whole tub is plexiglassed.
Fine. Then how does the water circulate/drain? Are the 4 ports in the bottom enough to do the deed?
Will we have to wait till Tim gets the machine, or do you guys know, and I'm in a blind spot? |

So I had a very good time in Knoxville on my trip down there. Abe was a very nice guy and what I thought would be an in and out trip turned into hours of talking. He still had some neat stuff, however my budget at the time and truck capacity limited further purchase. I was great meeting John and tearing into the KA washer, which was still NEW! I got my Whirlpool demo as well as a few bins of parts and agitators, including the fabric softener dispenser for my older GE.
Just a sample of what I picked up in parts...

I'm planning to buy the KitchenAid washer with the rapid advance timer, but Abe wasn't quite sure what is wrong with it -- he thought the fill solenoid.
I barely walked in the door Sunday morning before Tim, whom I've never met, leaped into action. In no time he had the KA apart and found that everything worked fine, including the timer and fill solenoid. It is missing the fill flume and the front self-leveling feet. Tim found a couple of feet, though, so all I need is the flume. I would literally have had no idea what to look for or even how to start taking the machine apart. I've said it before but aw.org people are the best! |

John,
As you found out, Tim is an amazing, friendly, helpful guy. I saw him in action at Kevin's wash-in and was very impressed at his efforts getting the yellow Westy front loader going again. Of course others had their hands in it too (John, Jeff, Nate, etc.) but Tim came up with a way to secure the boot to the drum and many other things as well. He is definitely an asset to have around as a friend and when it comes to his knowledge with appliances. Good going Tim! Just my .02 cents Patrick |

I have a TOL JA RR DW from 1988 that has all push-button electro-mechanical controls and even has the delay wash timer. It is in perfect operating condition and has a brand new complete pump module. We have $200 in it for the new pump module, someone come and get it or at some point it will be scraped and parted out. Contact me if anyone wants it, I already have a brand new MT RR just like it so I am keeping the MT for the museum. I have had and used the MT RR DWs in mine and friends homes and they just don't hold enough and are too restrictive in loading compared to the WP and KAs that I have. , so it won't ever make it into my kitchen. |
