I just found out, rather late, a locally owned Knoxville appliance/TV dealer is going out of business. He has been in business since 1952. Unfortunately, most of his stuff has been sold off, but I found a couple of things some of you might be interested and can give you his phone number if you are.

Sorry I didn't have my camaera with me. I'll try to get back there some time with one, he is about a 40 minute drive away so I am not sure when I'll get back.

A Whirlpool (1980's, I think) display washer with a clear acrylic tub and a window in the front of the unit so you can watch it agitate & spin.

A 1950's Kitchen-Aid dishwasher. The type with the car handle in the middle of the door and cycle knob at the bottom. It is used, one on his customers traded it in on a new machine. But its not in bad shape, and he said it works.

The owner (he's 84 years old)said KitchenAid contacted him some years back and wanted the machine, for publicity purposes, and said they would give him a new one in exchanage for it. But he wouldn't do it. He has a newspaper article about it on the wall of his store.

He has boxes of parts in the basement. I saw one control panel for an old center dial Maytag washing machine.

I bought a reverse rack, belt drive, JennAir (Maytag) TOL dishwasher with the electronic control panel. It must have been one of Maytags first electronic models.

I missed out on a GE SmartWash display dishwasher with the plexiglas in the opening so you could watch it work. (his daughter said I missed it by about 15 minutes, ugh) However, he still has a display Maytag dishwasher for sale.

It's not a reverse rack, but I would say a mid 1990's model, with the wash tower.

Unlike the GE display model. It is not a regular machine. But has an entire plexiglas (360 degree) upper housing so you can watch it work.

He also has a KithchenAid electronic washing machine with all chrome pushbuttons. I have no idea on the year, maybe late eighties to mid nineties?? No clue really.

I am sick about missing out on the sale. I only found out about it because his daughter decided to put an ad on Craigslist, at which point most things had been sold.

I made the mistake of asking him if he had a lot of vintage appliances, and he said, "a basement full." Oh well, I'll just have to cry in my milk a little.

He even has a monitor top GE refrigerator someone traded in back in the fifties, but he said it sold already and it just hadn't been picked up yet.

He also has a nice early 70's Magnavox console color tv (a big set with nice wood cabinet and speakers on each side) if anyone is interested.

The KA washer with chrome pushbuttons is not electronic.  It has a mechanical rapid-advance timer.  Unique and fun machine.

I'd love the KitchenAid washer and/or the MAgnavox tv. I'm assuming that shipping may be a bit cost prohibitive

Do you know what he is asking for this stuff?

Hi Sam,

No, I don't know his price on the KA washer. I am hoping to go back there tomorrow or soon thereafter, so I'll ask him for you.

Nothing is markaed. When I ask him a price, he pauses for a moment and then he comes up with one off the top of his head. I got the Maytag/JennAir Reverse Rack DW for $25.

Please Help in Determining the Production Date.

Anyone know how to date a Reverse Rack??

The model number is DU588 and the serial number is 792588 TJ.

I believe someone on this site, said that Maytag reduced the pulley size on their belt-drives one year on their RR to reduce performance (maybe to elimnate plasticware from flying around??). Do you know what model year this was done?

MT RR DW

combo52's profile picture

Thats a good deal Barry, your new MT RR DW was made May of 1987, the pulley size was reduced to reduce NOISE, with the little jets MT never had trouble with things flying around. In fact On these DWs when you triple stack bowls often the center one won't get washed at all well because of the limited amount of water, I have never had any other DW leave things loaded this way unwashed.

Bet I know who that is.

If I'm right, he used to have a very early Whirlpool washer on display. Wonder what has happened to it.

That is a RARE find. I have only seen one of these on the showroom floor at an independent dealer many years ago. I have always wondered about the operation. Would love to have it!

some photos

Just got back from Lane's Appliances. Had more time to talk to the owner, Abe, today. I have a few pictures that I will post with prices. He was very intersting to talk to. I told him I was a GE nut, and he said he was, too. He said they were a good company to work with.

When I asked him what his favorite appliances were (thought for sure he would say GE), he paused for a moment and said, "Maytag." (That is pre-Whirlpool Maytag.)

I asked him about the Reverse Racks, and he said he sold LOTS of them.

He said he was the only independent dealer in Knoxville to carry all the major brands. Oddly enough I saw no Frigidaire's there. He said he had three or four 1-18's he had taken in on trade-in, but gave them to his repairman so he could scrap them and get some money. I kind of gasped, involuntarily, and told them how popular they were with collectors, like us on the AW site. He said he didn't know that and thought he would get rid of them since you couldn't get parts anymore.

I wanted to get permission from his daughter, Joy, before I posted her cell phone #. She said it was fine. So if you have any interest you can call her and she or her dad (the owner, Abe) can help you. She spend many years working at her dad's store, she said.

Joy-- 865-850-8241

will post some picture shortly

KA 1950's door handle dishwasher

Abe said this works fine. It was a trade in. That newspaper article taped onto it tells how Kitchen-Aid contacted him as they wanted this dishwasher for their appliance museum. He said it was the only model they didn't have.

Unused KA washer

Forgive the very poor quality of the photo. I was in a very dark basement and couldn't find the switch for the light near the washer.

Abe said this was brand new. I don't recall the whole story, but I think he said it was a delivery to someone and they found out there was a small crack in the fill solenoid, so he took it back to the store. It was never used.

He wants $200

He did not give me a price on this. My guess is he would sell it for between $25 - 50.

Whirlpool window washer and Maytag Wringer

My apologies. I don't know what happened, but neither picture came out.

I'll try to get back there tomorrow and reshoot them.

He wants $100 for the Display Model Whirlpool with the window. He wants $250 for the Maytag Wringer.

I found a box with just the empty GE, Whirlpool, Gibson, Maytag, etc. binders and he said he was going through and pulling out the literature and throwing it away. He thought some kids might want the binders for school. He thought there was no value to what was inside, sales catalogs, brochures, and training manuals, so he pitched them. After another audible gasps, I told him many of us would LOVE to have the original literature!

Neither he, nor his daughter, knew there was such a thing as vintage appliance collectors.

We've got to get the word out there!!

Stay tuned...

Ever notice the similarity among Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet, B-9 from Lost in Space, and TL washers? Robert Kinoshita is said to have designed clear demo washers before he designed Hollywood props. Looking quickly, haven't been able to verify or determine who he worked for. Sources indicate he's still alive at 98.

Other side of the coin and some would say driving demand are the scrap dealers who purchase things no or little questions asked. In regard to to the story told above, everyone was asking what sort of NY scap dealer would purchase ConEd manhole covers without asking questions?

Iron gates and fences that have stood in front of brownstone homes in Brooklyn and Manhattan for over one hundred years are suddenly gone. Coiled copper rolls from construction sites, and so forth.

NYC supposedly has a recycling scheme, though doubt they make much from it as the scrappers are there before Sanitation. Indeed what is left is only their leavings.

You've got persons renting trucks to drive around NYC streets taking bales of commercial paper and boxes, metals, appliances, whatever can be sold. Cans and bottles? Forget the odd homeless persons, they are being squeezed out by the big time Mexican and South Americans who have their "routes" down pat. They know the recycling days for each street and load up their minivan/rented truck with tons of cans and bottles. Sometimes there is so much "noise" from persons digging in the rubbish it sounds like a herd of giant rats.

I hate it when people scrap well made devices and things from the past that can be restored. They take the metal and turn it in to shoddy, cheaply made products that are disposable.

No more jobs for repair people, just throw everything away. Planned obsolescence; it makes me so angry.

Between greedy corporations and stupid government regulations we've thrown it all away; no pun intended.

I just talked to a lady today that runs a family owned parts and hardware store and she feels the same way. She is so cool. She is very knowledgeable about so many things to do with appliances, furnaces, plumbing and many other things. Her father opened the store years ago and when he died she carried on in his footsteps. I don't know many women that would do that. She's a delight to talk to.

According to Abe, this Maytag wringer washer had only been used a few times. It does have some surface rust on the outside from when the owner had stored it in a garage for several years.

This is a larger cabinet, and even dustier, than the Magnavox. that's a layer of dust on the perimeter of the CRT. The top of this TV is nice, it is meant to look like slate.

It was a pleasure meeting Barry ay the store today. I'm sorry I was so rushed for time.

It was also a pleasure talking with Abe Lane. He was so excited to tell us about his life, secretly getting married when he was 17, being thrown out of his father-in-law's house by the seat of his pants when he finally told him he'd married his daughter, being drafted in WW II.

I didn't hear how he came to be in the appliance business, but he had photos from dealer's meetings in Amana, Iowa, where the company brought in celebrities like Ernest Borgnine for rounds of golf; he had played in foursomes with Tom Watson and Julius Boros, and had pictures of that. He says he still exchanges Christmas cards with Ernest Borgnine.

People of his generation, who started with nothing and had no advantages of advanced education, seem to me to be a whole lot happier than my angst-ridden generation. Maybe not having any choice but to get to work and keep at it no matter what is good for you; makes you appreciate what you've got instead of worrying about what you don't. He teared up a bit when talking about his wife, who died two years ago after 64 years (I think) of marriage, but he was mainly focused on how happy they were together and how proud he is of his children and grandchildren.

The business is located next to what used to be a notorious den of prostitution and drug dealing, the Fifth Avenue Motel. It's now been cleaned up and gentrified,
but I could see how he'd kept going there. He's just and honest guy who never cheated anyone and never thought about it. He must have had a bunch of loyal customers.

Some notes about the appliances:

The KA washer is a peach. I was kinda thinking about buying it if it was a belt drive, but is a direct-drive. It's a bit dusty outside, but nothing that wouldn't clean easily. The speckled porcelain tub is SPARKLING. The owner's manual and installation instructions are still there and sealed in the original plastic bags.

There are two stacked units, a GE Spacemaker and a regular size Whirlpool. Both have gas dryers, which is probably why they didn't sell. Few people have gas dryer hookups in this area.

There are two Neptunes which would be good buys. One of them was used one time by a city employee who dumped too much regular detergent in it, had a flood of suds, and returned it as defective! Other than still having some caked soap in the dispenser, it looks mint. Its one of the earlier models before the "humped" control panel, so it may have the wax motor and other known issues; I'm no expert in dating these. The other Neptune was used a little more and has something wrong with it, but I forget what. He wants $400 for the first and $200 for the other.

He has a brand new Litton combination microwave/convection range (in white). It must be what, 25 years old? He said he sold a lot of them and he didn't know why they went out of business.

There are boxes of parts in the basement including molded rubber hoses. I know these can sometimes be hard to find so it might be worth a call if you need something.

John observations agree with mine, Abe was very happy with his business and with his life in general. I was there for several hours after John left yesterday, helping Abe's assistant take down displays.

He had more good stories. Once, his Maytag sales rep told him if he didn't buy a load of microwaves, Maytag would drop him as a dealer. This was shocking to Abe as he was a large volume dealer. So Abe had a lawyer friend, and he had his friend send a registered letter of intent to sue to corporate office.

To make a long story short, he got a call from corporate office immediately and they offered their apologies, saying the rep could not not do such a thing, and wantaing to know the details. It was just a dishonest action on the reps part to sell microwaves and get a big commission.

Maytag had no knowledge of the salesman threats and did not condone such behavior. The rep was immediately fired. hehe Served him right!

Everytime I am there, I find something new. Abe has a display model of a 1990's Maytag dishwasher that has never been used. It looks to be an early model after they dropped the reverse rack..if anyone is interested. Has all the paperwork in it.

You can see a corner of the top of it beneath the plexiglas Maytag display that is pictured above. Has the same washing mechanism, and is actually a part of that display.

I forgot to mention, he wants $30 each for the two console (Magnavox and RCA) colors televisions. Too bad he doesn't have an old roundie color TV or I would have bought it on the spot!

By the way, the way, KA direct drive washer also has all the paperwork in it, as John discovered. The owners manual is still sealed in the original plastic and lying in the tub with the installation instructions.

Between the two of you, I'm sure the Jenn Air is in good hands.

I'm tempted by the KA washer, but have no room for more than one at a time, so this one would have to be fixed and ready to go into service immediately.

Hypothetically, how hard is it to replace the fill solenoid on the KA washer, and is the part still available? Are NLA parts a problem for these machines? And what problems would I like
I encounter trying to use a washer that has sat in a basement for 15-20 years?

I remember Robert cautioning against treating unused old washers as if they could become daily drivers right off the bat.

KA Push-Button Washer

combo52's profile picture

The inlet valve is still VERY available and cheap and there should be no problem pushing this washer into immediate service as it was so new when stored, it wouldn't have any problem with dry seals etc. This unique washer was only made for a year or so and few were sold, luckily all of the mechanical parts are just regular DD parts [ very reliable and easy to fix ] the problem is if you have any problem with the controls these parts are all NLA. We have an almond pair of these at our warehouse-museum that do work. It was an interesting idea to make an electro-mechaneally controlled washer and dryer so late in washer history. This was 1959 technology, WP had already been building electronically controlled washers and dryers for 10 years. I think that was an idea that came from someone from the Kitchen-aid side of things as these machines used a similar control system to the mechanical all push-button TOL KA Supbera DWs.

I kind of doubt the windowed WP washer is gone. There didn't seem to be exactly a flood of customers there on Saturday. I will certainly be glad to check this weekend if nobody can get through until then.

Tim,

I can go tomorrow and ask Abe if he will hold it for you. I am sure he will be happy to do this. Give me your last name and the approximate date on which you will pick it up. If he requires a deposit, I can pay it and you may reimburse me later. I've made the same offer to John, so I might as well put yours on hold while I am there tomorrow.

I cannot get a hold of Joy either. I think she may be overwhelmed with members from this site. I know several were going to call her about parts. They are not a parts store, just a dealer. What parts they do have are thrown, relatively unsorted, in boxes in the basement. My guess is no one there is probably wanting to rummage through these.

Barry

I love those Pushbutton KA washers. My friends mom had one for 17 years. I always loved the flourescent lighted console.

You know, I couldn't figure it out. See-thru outer tub, yes, but where is the inner tub--how can the machine hold water?

Then it dawned on me, just now: TWO see-thru tubs ( actually one window and one whole see thru tub.) Won't it be cool to see that jet turbotator go!?

Post# 601195 , Reply# 57   6/5/2012 at 13:10 (4,336 days old) by mickeyd (Hamburg NY)
Okay

mickeyd's profile picture

On first seeing it......interesting, where are the perforations in the tub? Well, it's a window. Then how do the tubs line up perfectly, after each spin to make the windows "work"? Are they engineered to do so, and I simply don't know enough?

No, silly, the whole tub is plexiglassed.

Fine. Then how does the water circulate/drain? Are the 4 ports in the bottom enough to do the deed?

Will we have to wait till Tim gets the machine, or do you guys know, and I'm in a blind spot?

It's very interesting. The inner tub is mostly white porcelain on steel with no perforations in the side, only in the bottom. At first glance I thought it was a solid tub!

I'm guessing it doesn't spin at all. Abe said it was intended to demonstrate the agitation. Could be wrong, though.

Yeah. If you look closely at the timer, it is clearly not a normal machine.

Maytag dishwasher module

Got several little tidbits from Abe today. A General Electric Sales Training Kit and a recent GE appliance specs catalog.

Also a Maytag Power Module cutaway, as you can see in the picture. Remember when Maytag used to have these on display at appliance stores?

and the cutaway view

You can see the filter backwash mechanism, as well as the drain and wash impellers. Unfortunately, the hard food wastear disposer blade doesn't show up, but its directly above the drain impeller.

Were those modules used until the end of production of the Maytag line in Jackson, Tenn., a couple of years ago?

Wonderful Trip

macboy91si's profile picture

So I had a very good time in Knoxville on my trip down there. Abe was a very nice guy and what I thought would be an in and out trip turned into hours of talking. He still had some neat stuff, however my budget at the time and truck capacity limited further purchase. I was great meeting John and tearing into the KA washer, which was still NEW! I got my Whirlpool demo as well as a few bins of parts and agitators, including the fabric softener dispenser for my older GE.

Just a sample of what I picked up in parts...

You did good, Tim!

Lot of nice loot, in addition to the "see-thru" washer.
Sorry I didn't get to meet you there. Abe is a really nice gentleman with a lot of stories!

I wish I would have known about his store back when he said he he had so many used appliances in the basement he could hardly walk through it.

Did you get your Whirlpool hooked up, yet? Would be great if you could post some pictures/videos of it in operation.

Two questions. Aside from the name, is there any difference between a Maytag and a Jenn-Air? What kind of agitator would the Kitchen Aid have?

I'm planning to buy the KitchenAid washer with the rapid advance timer, but Abe wasn't quite sure what is wrong with it -- he thought the fill solenoid.

I barely walked in the door Sunday morning before Tim, whom I've never met, leaped into action. In no time he had the KA apart and found that everything worked fine, including the timer and fill solenoid. It is missing the fill flume and the front self-leveling feet. Tim found a couple of feet, though, so all I need is the flume. I would literally have had no idea what to look for or even how to start taking the machine apart.

I've said it before but aw.org people are the best!

John,

As you found out, Tim is an amazing, friendly, helpful guy. I saw him in action at Kevin's wash-in and was very impressed at his efforts getting the yellow Westy front loader going again. Of course others had their hands in it too (John, Jeff, Nate, etc.) but Tim came up with a way to secure the boot to the drum and many other things as well. He is definitely an asset to have around as a friend and when it comes to his knowledge with appliances. Good going Tim!

Just my .02 cents

Patrick

You're a good guy, Tim!!

Brian, as far as I can tell, the Maytag and Jenn Air dishwashers came down the same assembly line. A worker slapped a Maytag Escutcheon on one and a Jenn Air on another.

Michael, no need to kill, ha. They are out there. I am sure you will find a Maytag or Jenn Air RR.

I'll keep an eye out for you, they occasionally show up around here. Are you specifically wanting an electronic control model? Or just a belt drive RR, in general??

Jenn-Air TOL RR DW

combo52's profile picture

I have a TOL JA RR DW from 1988 that has all push-button electro-mechanical controls and even has the delay wash timer. It is in perfect operating condition and has a brand new complete pump module. We have $200 in it for the new pump module, someone come and get it or at some point it will be scraped and parted out. Contact me if anyone wants it, I already have a brand new MT RR just like it so I am keeping the MT for the museum. I have had and used the MT RR DWs in mine and friends homes and they just don't hold enough and are too restrictive in loading compared to the WP and KAs that I have. , so it won't ever make it into my kitchen.

another find at Abe's

Picked up another goodie at Abe's today...

The sign was made for outdoor display and Abe never put it up. It's flourescent
backlit. You can see it sitting next to my lawn tractor, so you can get an idea of the size. About 3' by 3'.

Abe has a Maytag sign that is the same size, if anyone is interested. He also has outdoor backlit Whirlpool sign that is about 2 and half by five feet (just estimating)that he would like to sell.

A couple of good collectible items that you could put in your laundry rooms.

Found a pictures of the Whirlpool sign, at least a partial picture.

Abe had a funny story. He said Whirlpool was giving him trouble about where he wanted to place the sign on his building. He said, "It was my building, my sign and I paid for it" So, he just didn't put it up at all.

Don't know why he didn't put up the Maytag and GE signs.

By the way, he has a couple of Maytag "lonely repairman" cardboard signs. One is a life size (or near) stand-up. However, neither one is the original lonely repairman.

I'm sorry to hear about Abe, he was a really nice guy. He loved to talk and had lots of information that he shared. My visit to his shop was a great experience, I feel like there's not a lot of people out there that can be so jovial and welcoming to strangers. He will be missed.

Late to the party...

But I am sick and tired of when people whine about their new washers and dryers not performing properly when it's their own arrogance. They still stuff everything in, not even bothering to sort.
What do they do? SUE!!!! Common sense is blown out of the water!
