I was out on a call and saw this out of the corner of my eye. I don't think I've ever seen this dishwasher model. It's a rapid advance timer, no? Is this a D&M? Did D&M make a rapid advance timer model?

The customer says they haven't used it for a great number of years, hence the overall condition of it. Here's the close up of the left hand side.

Holey moley!  I remember seeing a few of the Canadian versions of these in the early 80s!

AFAIK,  there were a couple of D&kenMores with the rapid-advance timers;  Brian in Ontario may have one...

The upper arm. I have my foot in the door if he ever decides to replace it. I wish I had found time to open up the console to have a look at the controls of this rare bird...

Interesting. I was wondering if the 0584 was hinting at at May,1984 birthdate. BTW, I'm a 1967 year model...

Two spray arms AND a ceiling shower. How cool! Is that common?

When you asked a few weeks ago for a washer date, I thought you were kidding or that you didn't see the tag. In washers, it's always 110. and then the next two numbers are the date. So I'm making the inference that it's the same for DW's with a 587 meaning a dishwasher rather than a 110, for clothes washers. But I cold be all wrong. Just an inference.

So you're 45, well Happy Birthday, anywayCool (summer party glasses)

Seems awful modern for 1970, weren't roto-racks still around in '70. I think 84 is closer, we had this machine in my Aunt's house and it was an 81 or 82... I'd be interested to know.

And yes, it's a D & M

Thanks

Yep - the Kenmores starting in the mid - 70s had that configuration in the higher-end models- my ol' 78 has this same setup, with the pipes running up the left rear corner of the tub and all!!

The panel design treatment resembles the style of the more BOL Kenmore my parents got in 1975 or so, but the buttons on theirs were rectangular shaped with a rough surface.

The last 4 digits of the serial # are month and year of mfg. Kenmore used a different model # pattern for D&M dishwashers. This was born in May 1984

110. is Kenmore. Honest. All of my Kenmores begin with 110. Whirlpool Washers begin with letters. My threee are LDA LSP LHC.

The DW's must have a different coding which I had obviously not yet learned. Excited to help Andy, I went off half-cocked. How could a panel so futuristic be from 1970? Time machine? I am spectacularly wrong, and will go down to the basement right now and put myself thru the Visimatic Wringer. OOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW, not my wiener OHHHHHHHHHHHH.

PS: Thanks, John for showing us how to do it, and long live the Visimatic Roto Cap which you so generously sent me. I've kept it clean.

Interesting dishwasher - this must have been a transition from the Solid-State models toward the Whirlpool Ultra-Wash machines that began in 85-86.

Sears used source coding for nearly all of their appliances, garden power tools, etc. This indicated the manufacturer of the products. Montgomery Ward had a similar system for their appliances, etc.

587.xxxxxx was the source code for D&M dishwashers
110.xxxxxx was a Whirlpool product

Have fun, she's a keeper and it's good to see that there is a few more still hanging around!
I had the chance to hook her up in my garage and boy is she louder than a young teenage girl screaming at her momma!

Drew,

It must be interesting being in the biz, going into peoples homes and seeing pleasant surprises. You probably run across surprises that are unpleasant too. That's the part that would bother me. Going in filthy peoples homes. I'm afraid I would have to scold them, be concerned for my health and that wouldn't be good for business, but it would be hard for me to hold my tongue. I'm afraid I would have to start cleaning the general area and that wouldn't do. Have you ever been tempted?

Brian

1984 D&M built TOL KM DW

combo52's profile picture

Thanks for taking the time to share this with us Andy, it certainly brings back memories. I would have never in a thousand years guessed that anyone would get excited about a D&M built DW of this age, LOL, I guess I should be more grateful for all the money we made trying to fix these awful DWs and all the money we made replacing them with new KAs and WPs. But what always  comes to mind first is all the cuts on fingers from the very poor construction chronic leaking and rusted parts, few D&M machines lasted even 10 years if used everyday.

The D&M of today to me are the tall tub Frigidaire s, the Frigidaire s do have better assembly quality and don't rust and they are a good but frustrating source of income as people will often try to have them repaired once or twice before we sell them a new DW. But just like the D&Ms of old many people realize after using the new TT Frigidaire s for a few years they just call us and order a new DW when things start to go wrong as they have already realized that the machine is basically a POS.

I will be interested to see how many of the future appliance collectors in 15-30 years will be collecting Frigidaire TT DWs built after 2000 LOL.

D&M

During my childhood I remember my Aunt constantly having the dishwasher repaired. The Linoleum under the front of the dishwasher had began to suffer water damage and I remember later on it was just used to store dish towels. She never pulled it out, her husband was a hardcore Sears guy, everything down to the HVAC came from there. This was a bedford stone ranch built in 62. in 80 or 81 the entire kitchen was completely redone in Avocado, dishwasher, and the matching BD washer. The stove was older, it was a 40" and she had the upright freezer and fridge side by side. I always loved her kitchen. She passed away a few years ago and her son, who owns a large HVAC company here decided to rehab the house as a rental and gutted it. The sub-floor in the kitchen under the dishwasher was gone. The only remaining wood was along the front lip and the dishwasher was wedged on that relying on the counter to hold it in. The machine was nothing but rust on the outside of the tub and underneath with some very scary wiring.

This is just my experience with a D&M from this era. I currently have an 18" version of the D&M compact with the Kenmore name on it. With a sanding wheel and some rack goop the racks are good again and with the new wash-arm unit it's still going. I like the size. I'll leave it at that, but if loaded exactly it will produce decent results, you just have to learn the machine. Currently it's on month 3 or washing for a house of 3, it runs 1-3 times per day and so far has been a champ. I run it with old stock phosphated Cascade and I do NOT pre-rinse. I know people that have the 24" BOL Frigidaire and can get a clean dish out of it though. It serves it's purpose to me in an akward kitchen. If I want really clean dishes, the 1981 Power-Scour awaits in the garage, I love that thing, it's just so noisy and the wheels are shot. It will make a good built-in someday.

-Tim

D&M Continued

beekeyknee's profile picture
We had a kitchen with all Sears appliances installed in '70. The dishwasher flooded the floor twice and it had to go. It was a BOL roto-rack. The refrigerator only lasted 11 years and the stove about the same amount of time. The second Sears stove would shock the person using it when ever they lighted a burner. I think the second stove lasted around 9 years. She got another one and it's still there. She went through three before she found one that would hold up.

The d/w got replaced in '84 with a KA Superba and the fridge got replaced with an Amana in '81. The KA was still running when I took it out five years ago and replaced it with an exact duplicate with less mileage. She always had to use the Heavy cycle or P&P Soak and Scrub cycle to get dishes clean and then it didn't do that great of a job. The spindle on the pump was worn out and there was a hole in the supply tube for the upper rack. The racks were in pretty bad shape too. When I replaced it she said this is the dishwasher I remember. The Amana is still going strong. Shes had two Sears disposers. The first one would always jamb. The one shes has now works good.

Speaking of bad plumbing and electrical work, my Dad drilled a hole in the floor and ran a piece of romax directly to the dishwasher. The plumbing to the d/w was solid copper with flared ends. He has this flair tool that he would still use if we'd let him. He still likes to plumb like it's 1960. When I replaced the dishwasher I ran a new three conductor line to the back wall behind the d/w and installed a low profile box down close to the floor so when the d/w is pushed back it doesn't get in the way. Now it can be plugged in. Then I ran a steel braided flex line for the water. He kept laughing at me; saying it was stupid. When it came time to replace the kitchen floor I think he realized what I did wasn't such a bad idea after all. He finally realizes I'm not as stupid as he thinks I am.

I'm the one that told them to get the K/A and the Amana, also. Parents aggravate me. Why do they think their children don't know anything. When something gos wrong my Mother calls me now. But when I'm there and suggest something she wants to argue with me. When they need plumbing I tell them to call a plumber now.

My sister is just as bad. I'm to the point of letting them wallow in they're own problems.

Hey Paul! I have also seen the Canadian incarnation of that machine! Infact, one like it showed up on Kijiji a few months ago. I saved the pictures, I called the lady who was selling it, and by the time I called, it was already sold...

That Canadian model looks really cool. I just never realized that D&M had a rapid advance timer available.

I have been in more houses than I can possibly count. For the most part, they run the gauntlet from Martha Stewart clean to barely presentable. Then there are the few where you're glad they at least made a pathway... I've refused service at a small handful and called the Authorities on one...
