![]() Post your pics in this thread that you've already started. Limited to one pic per post, but keep posting replies until you're done. I refurbed this model dryer several years ago, found on FreeCycle. The front drum slides had worn down and the doofuses kept running it until the edge of the drum shredded and tore through the front bulkhead panel.

I had the same model as your's and it needed the same cleaning when I got it,but mine had a locked up motor when I got it so it had to be torn down anyway,so if you still have it apart I would check the grease in the motor bearings, the end caps pop right off,the grease in mine had dried up,I just repacked it with wheel bearing grease and it was good as new.

![]() My project was Nov-Dec 2006. Wasn't as filthy as yours. I disassembled to an empty cabinet (didn't pull the rear bulkhead). Washed everything in detergent/water, including the heating element (but not the motor, switches & thermostats, of course). Replaced the destroyed parts. She's paired at the house next door with an MAH6500 (bought new a year later before they disappeared). I did find lint balls in the drum baffles. :-)

I just don't understand how can spend that much money on![]() You'd be surprised. This dryer looks like the average dryer I take apart. It's no worse than most. Fabric produces lint. People do not take their dryers apart like they should to clean them. Now, there are some dryers that get way worse than this. Being a sales & service provider I can't name the name because it may get me in trouble if someone from "corporate" would read this post. Thou shall not make disparaging remakes about our product. Yada yada yada. We call this certain dryer a "lint pig" because every single one I take apart to redo to resell is loaded, I mean LOADED, with lint.

![]() I agree, Todd. That dryer looks almost like a walk in the park compared to some I've seen in the field. I like the ones that are so packed, the level of the lint is such that you cannot see the motor and the like. So bad that the lint is actually pressing against the bottom of the drum like some kind of sick, demented support pad... How the dryer didn't combust is beyond me. By the way, how about the dryers where you find intact ammunition inside the dryer cavity, right next to the heat source? Talk about the end of cycle signal from hell!

![]() The woman I bought them from had been putting me off by not promptly returning my calls or emails since July 4th when she posted the ad. She wanted $450 for the set, and I was offering her $300 and she would have to deliver them. So I guess she was trying to hold out for more money. I must have been the only one interested in her "Bisque" Neptunes because she finally caved and agreed to sell and deliver them.
Now after playing phone tag for weeks they're finally here. The dryer is gas, which I was planning to switch over to propane and use it in the garage as a back-up, since we only have provisions for an electric dryer in the main laundry room. Normally I would pass on any "bisque" machines, but just a month earlier I found a good deal on an LCD Neptune electric dryer in Bisque and my Mom liked the color. Of course, I was told they had "no issues", but that was not the case.

![]() I paid $145 for it delivered...the owners brought it with them from California to here in Ocala, even though they didn't have gas at the new house. The wife didn't want to leave it behind. I told him I don't have gas either and was just going to convert it to use propane out in the shed. He said don't tell his wife that because she loves/loved that dryer and if she knew that could be done she wouldn't have finally let it go. She said it was spotless, which it wasn't, unless she was reffering to dents or rust. but it was dusty and sandy.
All of that just wiped away with a new paint brush I used to dust the crevices and a good old bottle of windex and a micro cloth, I can work wonders!

![]() I used some of that "Wesley's Bleach White" (sp?) for tires on the boot and tub ring. It was a gamble not knowing what the outcome would be, but the results speak for themselves.
This house is on a well system too, but we have a water treatment and softener system to eliminate this type of problem. Having the open flume design on top will allow me to keep an eye out for deposit build up.

![]() I have to tell you, that first night, Dutch detergent wasn't the only one chasing after dirt!
I spent a good part of the night tinkering with it listening to Pandora. Hey, it keeps me off the streets! Also, in between rescuing an old Filter-Flo, and picking up a leaking Duet Washer. I managed to get back to the dryer referenced in the beginning of this thread. I just have to now put it back together. It looks brand new inside. this picture doesn't do it justice. I used a cell phone camera with bad lighting. In the light of day it's brilliantly white.

![]() " the exterior of the drum and interior of the outer tub is likely coasted with the same smutz"
That thought did occur to me Dadoes, so I filled the tub with a heavy solution of Limeaway and water and added 2 gallons of additional water after the machine stopped filling. I let it run on a combination stain, soak and heavy cycle. Then when it was about to drain, I stopped the machine and let it soak for a few hours. Came back, opened the door, then rotated the drum so that a new section was under the cleaning solution. I then scrubbed the entire interior down with a short bristle brush. Restarted the machine and did it again. Finally, I let the machine soak overnight. This was all after I had already done the same with a quantity of bleach the night before. But all that was in vein as I suspect it needs a new rear bearing. It's loud, and probably should be replaced regardless for good measure. I see the kits are about $45. Now that I worked on that Filter-Flo tub seal. I'm fairly confident I should be able to do this repair as well.

![]() ..can someone ID this dryer. It's not labeled anything other than Maytag. Has the silver trim around the buttons like the Atlantis line and the slopped front like the Neptune's. Also classic Neptune inside.
Also I need a propane gas conversion kit for it and 4 grey foot pads for the legs. Help me Obi-wan, you're my only hope!

![]() Filler up please! Nice idea, now you can use a bargain detergent and you don't have to leave the evidence around.
I'm sure the Detergent manufacturers were not happy that thousands of bottles would not be hanging around american laundry rooms, left out to splash their brand name to all who gaze upon them. not to mention a precise measured dose of detergent. Let's see if we really can get 140 loads out of that bottle!

![]() **Special Thanks again to yogitunes!~**
He was kind enough to send me the propane conversion kit for one of my Neptune Gas dryers. I will start out with the Older one first so I can pair it with the Atlantis washer. They look so alike! Here is a picture of the gas valve. Not sure what to replace, but what's the worst that can happen, right?

![]() I found the manual, but it isn't clear on how to get into diagnostic mode for my model. It says insert key and unlock, now in programming mode? Except there is no card reader or coin box on this model and It never turns off if you leave it plugged in...flashes "select cycle". It would be nice to lengthen the wash cycle and add the optional extra rinse to all the cycles.

Not to hijck the thread, but... ![]() How do Maytag Neptune type dryers compare to the old 80's Series type Kenmores? I want a Neptune dryer, to match my MAH5500AWW washer, but wonder how it will compare to my Kenmore with "soft heat" (heat gradually reduces throughout the cycle, dryer the clothes get, lower the heat gets.).
What do you guys think? | ||

![]() I like the models with the intelidry moisture monitor display. You can tell from how much blinking the display is doing to see how "wet" the clothes are. Less moisture, less blinking. I think it's more informative than the estimated time method of the LED and LCD versions of the dryer. It's a feature available across the Maytag Dryer line and not limited to the Neptune version of the dryer.

![]() ..Hmmmm. I saw this from the road on the side of someones house, and said, wow what a weird refrigerator. I live in the country, so there was a lot of overgrowth hindering my view, so I turned around to get a better look. Good thing I did because that fridge turned out to be a Neptune SuperStack in electric! The homeowner was mowing his lawn and must have been wondering why I circled back. I stopped and asked him if he was selling the Neptune, he said you can have it! It just needs a motherboard and new bearings. I told him I would be back tomorrow when I could get a truck.
Today, my nephew and I picked it up and dropped it in my driveway. Owner was very nice. There is also hurricane Issac bearing down on us and I thought if I was going to rescue it, the sooner the better. (cell phone picture)

![]() ..Not just on the commercial version. (which makes sense as the doors would probably be left open to show the washer was available for use and the active tub light of 10 watts would neglect any energy savings when you calculate all the machines times all of the hours they are open), but it's also missing on my LED residential model MAH5500 too.
I have the electric solenoid door lock with the back-up wax motor, perhaps there was a design change and the light was omitted. Hmmm, I'll have to remove the door lock mech when I do the bearings and seals to see if the extra wiring for the light is there.

Door lock changed from wax motor to solenoid. Boot revision. Motor and control board revision. Tub light eliminated. Water level pressure switch moved from console to drain pump. Other electrical and design changes.

![]() Dodoes, "Recirculation pump eliminated", I kept seeing a reference to a recirculation pump in my repair manuals but had yet to see one so equipped out in the field. There is only a cursory explanation on how to replace one, but not on it's specific purpose. What does it add in regards to the was cycle? Shades of a vintage Whirlpool Combo? IIRC Neptune does not have direct injection but rather a divertor flume in the outer tub top directed to the front of the wash basket.

![]() There's an MAH4000 with recirculation pump been in my garage for several years (pending bearing replacement for a friend who had already bought a replacement machine). Purpose of it is to pick up detergent water from the sump and return it to a port at top of the outer tub ... presumably to deal with detergent stuck/settled in the sump. There's no recirculation shower directly onto the tumbling clothes. A check valve of sorts was added to the sump when the recirculation pump was eliminated.

![]() I called the seller this morning and she says there are 2 washers and 1 dryer available. She said One washer needs a "sensor" because it would not operate, so they bought a second washer to use for parts. The washer and dryer will be available for approximately $289. I told her I was only interested in a washer. They just got them in so it will be a few days for them to get them sorted and she will call me when I can come and take a look at them. I always liked the look of the Crosley versions of the Neptunes. Especially in that battleship grey "colour".

Chatty Thread but...![]() I was supposed to be somewhere else about a half hour ago, and instead, I kept reading this thread.
Are the Neptune machines worth fixing? Don't shoot me. I thought they were just a gimicky design, but so true, they reminded me of the Dr. Who and the Daleks(I couldn't remember their names). Just love this thread...really interesting, really impressed with what you did with that MT Neptune dryer - holymotherofpearl, that thing was a mess. Isn't there a design department that focuses on minimizing these things happening to the degree seen there? Jus' askin' :-) Good job and nice finds, tecnopolis! Great photos, too.

![]() I personally think the Maytag Neptune and Atlantis lines and are special enough to warrant restoration. Now that Whirlpool owns almost everything appliance-wise out there, it's getting harder and harder to find an original design with engineering from outside of Whirlpool's labs.
Maytag also has a rich and storied history that spans over 100 years and it was founded by a smart man of the same name, not a collection of corporations~~! **Yes, this thread started out on fixing that first Neptune dryer, but has since spread out to include the Neptune and Atlantis Washers and Dryers and all their variants** Of course, none of this would be possible without the input from other members on AW.O, and the content here is provided for those who may also want to adopt the famous slant nosed front beauties from Maytag. As far as the pictures go, I was always the one who ran the projector in grammar school, so including the visual aids may have been drum into me when trying to make a point. I hope others are motivated to start their own collection. -Alex

Worth saving ![]() I recognize the friends, but will do a little background reading on Fred Maytag.
There's some good and bad in the big fish swallowing the smaller fish - but more cars today look more alike, as do the appliances. That speaks something. Somewhere in my reading, I read of several complaints with the Neptunes. But you make a good point, and like many of the other decades of appliances designed, if not for you and others, they would eventually become scarce, vanished next to a rock or weeds in one of the prairies or fields.

![]() If you look hard enough you'll find complaints from all across the appliance market, so no brand is immune.
But Maytag was a pioneer in more than one time in their history. Sometimes things need to be changed once new models get into users hands. Case in point, the older iPhone that if you hold the phone in the lower left it dramatically reduced the ability of the phones antenna. Bad tires from Firestone who's tread would separate at highway speeds, GM's x-cars (Chevy Citation/Olds Omega/Buick Skylark) whos brakes would prematurely lockup and would send the car into a spin. Toyota Camry floor mats, etc. All of the earlier Neptune's faults were addressed and sorted in later models. So technology as a whole has it's share of teething pains...What's important is how the company handles the issue.

White Consolidated Ind.![]() Westinghouse was a great brand, as far as I knew back when I knew far too little. I just read a little bit about White Consolidated Industries(Thomas White)..and the company buying Westinghouse (White-Westinghouse). and now being owned by Electrolux. Goodgrief, on and on. Frankly, I don't want to know. I'm enjoying the perspective as a new member and enjoying the collections and knowledge/skills/restorations. Think I'll sit here for a while. :-)

![]() This is one of the books I bought about Maytag's history.
The booklet was published by Maytag back in 1993, in commemoration of the centennial of the company's beginning. It consists of 36 pages of pictures, and history about the company. Starting in 1893 as a farm implement manufacturer, and eventually settling on washing machine production in the early 1900's. Through the decades the company grew and prospered. By the time this booklet was produced in 1993, the company had expanded by buying other brands in the industry. This eventually led to it's demise. Lots of historical photos and information here. An interesting book for all Maytag collectors, showing what made the company great.

These days, the only Maytag product that has a direct connection to Frederick L. Maytag is Maytag Blue Cheese. It's really good stuff, if you're a fan of the stinky cheeses. I think it's a 4th generation Maytag family member(s) that runs that operation. CLICK HERE TO GO TO Iowegian's LINK

@technopolis: I think any real Maytag - meaning designed and manufactured in-house is worthy of restoration. The story of how Maytag went down the tubes will be referenced in undergrad and MBA business textbooks as an example of how not to run a company for years to come.

Neptune - The Brand Name/Line That Killed Maytag![]() Or at least helped it along to it's demise as an independent company.
Shame Maytag dropped the ball with Neptune washing machines and such when they first came out. With proper seasoning and working out of the quirks they would have had a winner on their hands. But no, by the time all the bad press had gotten out persons wouldn't touch them or much else made by Maytag with a barge pole.

@Launderess: If all Maytag did wrong were to send the less-than-fully-baked Neptune to market, they would have survived. The Ralph Hake era and acquisition of Amana set the failure into motion, not the Neptune.

![]() Many a farm woman would agree with you Iowegian, since many weren't connected to the grid yet. It was equipped with the single cylinder Hit-n-miss 2-stroke engine, there is also a 2 cylinder version of the engine.
When the apocalypse comes, those things are going to be great to have around. But really, Maytag did address all of those issues with new and improved parts and there hasn't been a need for any revisions to those or any other parts, so in essence, with the exception of the wax motor, all manufacturers have trouble with mold and bearing wear. Maytag's' may just have been first to come to light.

Neptune Risers![]() I like the one-piece riser(that is one piece , right?)
It's a matter of 1) How tall are you and do these risers help with adding/removing articles to be washed/dryed? and 2) whether you need storage. I really like the way it looks right there, and un-related, I think all the appliances should be generously lit with the LED's like they do with refrigerators, now.

![]() Interesting thing about these FL machines.......and were going way back to when Westinghouse and Bendix machines were in production....you have to take on several factors as to why the change to add risers.....first of all, until F&P came out with a TL dryer, ALL dryers were front load, no one ever complained about stooping over and bending to load machines, now its all the rage of a FL washer is making it difficult to handle.....WHY?
and kicking myself for missing my calling.....1995, had major surgery on my stomach, and could not bend and stoop at the same time, having just got a Limited Kenmore pair, I built a platform raising the dryer 12 inches, made all the difference in the world....who knew it would take off on FL pairs.... even dishwashers are being installed on pedestals in custom kitchens...... although Alex, I am considering building a platform all the way across for my Neptunes....but more along the lines of 12 inches high, and maybe even rope lights under the overhang for effect.....keep the ideas comming....

Risers w/Drawers![]() Single riser is clean looking and drawers are great, but it's back to stooping, so for infrequently needed things, they're nice but expensive unless you build your own. If you have time/interest to do that...just think, Autodesk now has software you can load on your iPhone or iPad or Pc to design your own anything and make a 3D model - washer risers, parts(ok, not affordably yet) but it's free at : usa.autodesk.com/autodesk-123d/...
I like the Neptunes you pictured, tecnopolis, with risers...that wavy console adds some grace to the additional height - i.e; some machines look like hulky behemoths on risers, unless some enclosures are made around them.... two cents spent again. :-)

Fascinating Alex!![]() Never knew Crosley still existed! Now I need a set of Darth Vader machines! Desperately!
Funny those original Crosleys are Bendix washers/dryers! Now they are Neptunes! On the Neptune you are missing something- I have the first generation machines, pre ordered. Those machines were unique in engineering because they never had failures, or mold or whatever. Soon after they came out, Maytag found ways to make them cheaper and then all the trouble started. If you can get your hands on an early run 3000 you've got a nice machine in your stable!

She said no, they had been very busy and they were still sitting there waiting on him to repair. I told her to give me a call when they were available.
I then contacted the seller of the Crosley set that was for sale here in town and asked him if the dryer was gas or electric, not that that was going to matter to me, and see if he also does delivery. Still waiting on his reply. -Alex

Neptunes - which were best series?![]() Jetcone ..on early Neptunes (series 3000) and the question I asked you ...never mind! I was thinking I was thinking(apparently not) about the later 5500 designs.
(early 3000 series may not be prone to mold and may be good machines...but from reading this Thread Number: 42481 " Maytag Neptune MAH3000AWW flooding", it looks like the overall design and functionality improved with later series..which were best? While hell freezes over on that question, I like many of the Neptune series, problems or not.

![]() I was looking through my old files and came across my first Maytag Neptune.
One morning I was fast asleep when a friend called me to tell me his new washer and dryer were comming later that morning and he wanted to offer me his old dryer since it was still working. I asked him what it was, he said a Maytag Neptune and was I interested. Otherwise, it was going to the curb. I hopped in my pick up and raced over to find a pristine dryer that only needed a good home. I had already gotten a Frigidaire front-load washer earlier in the year and was still drying my clothes in the on-site laundry room, so this was something I needed. I only had one 220v outlet in the studio and it was already being used for my stove. Well it took 2 seconds to figure out I needed a dryer more that a stove since the only thing I ever cooked with was a microwave or a toast-r-oven. I fell inlove with the intelidry indicator and wondered why more dryers didn't have it. Seemed more logical that the "estimated time" most dryers use today. One minute they say 38 minutes left, come back in 5 minutes and it's now saying 10 minutes, so not very accurate. Anyway, here she is.

![]() I used it for a long while until I saw they had come out with a newer model with the swoopy backsplash, so I decided to sell her, and for good money too!
I later regreted doing that, but with the cash I got, it paid for a smaller Malber dryer that I stacked ontop of my fridgemore to reclaim some of my precious space. It was also 220V. I still have both of these today. Although they are not hooked-up.

230ft3/minute! You are a wealth of info; I see a new Disney event : "Neptune's Den" ( a twirling and then accelerated ride between clothing and bedding...culminating in a windful musical accompaniment, "It's a World Full of Hot Air, Afterall", where riders get misted with a cool steam at the end of the ride, in a roomful of mile-high laundry. Ok, I'll go to my room, now. Those dark Crosleys were kidnapped. Marvin?

![]() Just some facts I posted in another thread that I wanted to include here for the archives.
"This is only 1 of 2 dedicated front load all-in-one platforms that are available in the market. That is that they are not stacked individual units with a mounting kit. The only other one available is Frigidaire. So that makes it unique. The official name is the Neptune "Super Stack", or SS for short. If there is something wrong with it, it would only be the familiar Neptune issues, as the stackable unit didn't have repairs specific to it. I was fortunate to find a neighbor getting rid of his and got it for free with some repair issues. The price sticker I found on it from Sears had a retail price of almost 2k. Here is a page from a dealer price book I have."

![]() I went to lowes the other afternoon and priced out all the pieces I would need in addition to the dryer conversion kit that yougitunes was gracious enough to send me to run my dryer off of LP. I may or may not run 2 dryers off this supply, so this is for a single appliance hook-up. First I wanted a fuel level gauge. $12.99.

![]() ..I would prefer to keep the gas cylinder as far away as possible from the dryer for no other reason than for my peace of mind. A 10 ft. extension hose runs $18.99 This is optional, I'm sure heat is not going to be an issue for the cylinder as the area near the dryer won't get any hotter than the underside of a barbecue grill which is where ours sits. So it's just precautionary and it allows me some flexibility on where to place the cylinder weather it be outside or just farther away from the dryer than the short hose that comes with the regulator kit above.

![]() I also will need to buy a special adapter that allows you to connect the LP hose to the standard gas fitting on the back of the appliance. It wasn't in stock, but I'll be back to check it out once they get them in and add the cost to the equation. Apparently, they are quite popular in the area for the fish camps and lake houses around the area.
And of course I will need an LP cylinder which runs $45, or $23 with exchange. I don't know how many drying cycles I will get out of a standard cylinder, so the key is to keep track of how much drying i do first couple of cylinders to gauge it's cost.

..not sure how the Whirlpool phenomena will change - do consumers vote with their wallets or just go on being trained to expect less, pay more, and get ready for the next candified solution? I enjoy this thread and the graphics- and hope fewer are taken to the cleaners and hung out to dry.

Maytag's demise. Tecnopolis,
I love your appliance collection. Maytag is alive and well and in my basement, I like to think. The appliance industry is so different now. It is no longer fun to go "window shopping" at appliance stores. When Maytag came to an end, it was like someone died. I sometimes wonder why couldn't Maytag get a gov't bailout? But then again a philosophy that has consumers pay "more" for a better product doesn't work anymore. Back in their day, Maytag manufactured their own rubber hoses, their own electrical wire, essentially everything down to the screws they used because they could make the components to a higher standard - "theirs". With the exception of timers, motors and die-cast consoles they made everything. Fast forward to the year 2000 when outsourcing as much as possible was the norm. Then what if they stayed focused on laundry and dishwashers? Would they still be around? They had ZERO debt through 1986 until they acquired Magic Chef. I know they paid cash for Hardwick Stove Co in 1981 and perhaps they did finance Jenn-Industries in 1982. That gave them quality cooking products. But the Magic Chef thing - that was major. Then Chicago Pacific in 1989 for Hoover and a European market that almost bled them to death. They were already on different path before the Neptune was put on the market. Of course not "field-testing" the Neptune, was a strike against their name. Then with the Amana washer-transmission massacre they were probably at the point of no return. I've read many takes on the death of Maytag. Emotions ran high here on this site. Folks were angry. But no one ever mentioned the African-american president of Maytag (Lloyd Ward) who left his position at Maytag completely unannounced. Their stock price plummeted by $79 in 1 day and never came back. That sure didn't help! I still remember the day in 1985 when I interviewed at Maytag Ahh, the plant tour and the merry-go-round. Yes one of the finer moments. So today when I want to recapture a bit of the past I go to my basement - where Maytag is alive and well. (Did i say I love your Maytag collection)?

![]() Reminds of me of one of my favorite movies - Uncle Buck: "c'mon open up, what do I have to do , talk dirty to you (bangs on the washer repeatedly)..."c'mon, c'mon, that's it...I'm going to shove my load in you, whether you like or not..c'mon...(banging and pounding continues)..." Yep, this was probably just "manhandled", a wittle bit too much..

Last week I did two belt replacements for neighbors. One on a Kenmore dryer circa 2000 and another one on a circa 2000 GE dryer. Inside both dryers looked alike.
The Kenmore had 80% of the airflow in the lint filter chute blocked(between the filter and the squirrel cage fan) of hardened lint. I had to use a screwdriver to break it up. And there was some lint past the squirrel cage fan too. I vacuumed the whole thing and washed everything in hot water with some dawn. All the parts in the airflow loop were very sticky like someone put glue in there. The GE dryer was much worse. The chute from the filter to the squirrel cage was 100% blocked, the squirrel cage was completely packed with lint. I removed the tub and must have filled two vacuum bags with general lint all inside the bottom of the dryer. The motor was even more linty than yours was! But I noticed it was not sticky nor clumped together. Guess who used fabric softener and who did not! The exhaust tube was only 2 feet long to the outside and was completely clean. While talking to the owners of these dryers I asked them if they had heard of dryer fires before. One said a house two streets over had the back half of it burn down a few years ago from a dryer fire. And the second person had heard of dryer fires but never thought to do anything to prevent such things. I certainly let them know how close they came. But they didn't see that phased by it all. A few days later I asked one of the neighbors how her dryer was performing. Has she noticed it is drying faster than before? Her response? "I haven't really noticed any difference, I'm just glad it's working again!" I know in our Whirlpool manual it states that every three years the external cover should be removed and the entire unit vacuumed out. But how many people read the owners manuals? I knew of the possibility of the lint fire but never knew how many people are living on the edge with these things.

![]() From the web.
Frederick Louis Maytag (1857-1937). The farm boy's hard work and vision led to the production of the washing machine that became the top-seller. Today the name Maytag is known all over the world. Maytag was born on a farm near Elgin, Ill., the oldest child of German immigrants Daniel and Amelia Maytag. They brought their children to Iowa in a covered wagon, settling near Laurel in Marshall County. Their son worked on the family farm. At 24 and with little formal education, he took a job with a Newton implement dealer. By 1909 he owned his own farm implement company, which began marketing washing machines in 1910 because Maytag needed a product to sell in winter when sales of farm equipment were slow.Washers sold so well that Maytag discontinued selling farm equipment in 1923. Maytag, who spent a great deal of his life on the road drumming up business, credited much of his success to inventor Howard Snyder, who as chief engineer at Maytag brought his expertise into making a wringer washer. Sales took off later with the addition of an agitator that forced the water through the clothes. Maytag - who called himself "F.L." - married Dena Bergman, and they had two sons and two daughters. Maytag's philanthropy was evident: He gave Newton a 40-acre park and swimming pool. He built and donated the Maytag Hotel and spearheaded a theater and a water plant. He also built hundreds of houses for his workers, selling them on easy terms. Maytag died of a heart ailment at his winter home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He left a $10 million estate. It was estimated that up to 10,000 mourners attended Maytag's funeral. Those who could not fit into Newton's First Methodist Church were taken to four other churches and two halls.

![]() The idea was to direct more light into the drum. I used some leftover bumper chrome paint I had lying around. Unfortunately I won't be able to gauge the effect until I can get the dryer hooked up to a 220 outlet, so this may have just been an exercise in futility. But hey, it keeps me off the streets!
