Love the out of this world Hotpoint washer-dryer ---BUT why is Saturn all dented up, she's a gas giant!!
And never knew Hotpoint had a fill horn inside!!! Solenoid Robot Drive on the clutch, just what we like to see! Wow its a Frame supported washer, the cabinet is just a wrap--love that sooo original Gyramatic in design! And the tub is suspended just like the Duomatic- Impressive! Its got a separate pump motor for the pump -how 1990's Euro!! I bet those heating units don't do much for the wash cycle suspended up like that!! That's 1950's bojack advertising propaganda! |

Yes, but for all of their design brilliance and possible patent infringement, the machine only spun once. I keep confusing it with the SQ combo which spun twice, but I think the HP only spins once after the last rinse, like the transmissionless GE combo. |

Yes it would be fascinating to know the whole story about what happened to this interesting machine.I do believe they must have been sold at least for a while, I have even found new in box parts for these machines that I still have. The top mounted dryer heating elements would work just fine for heating the wash waster, early GEs and MT combos also did this and they worked just as the heat they produce has no where else to go but be absorbed by the rotating drum, clothes, and water.
After HP stopped making this machine they either sold the design to Speed Queen [ or they stole it LOL ] as SQ introduced a slightly smaller version of this machine that didn't come out till 1961. SQ was the last US company to introduce a Combo and I don't know how long they continued building them, Thanks to Jon [ Jetcone ] we have the only known SQ Combo here at the appliance warehouse in Maryland. |

This is interesting indeed! The design is very similar to the GE combo - did GE make stand-alone combo units at this time?? Other than the ones in the Kitchen Centres, I have only ever seen or heard of built-in GE combos.
I am fascinated by the spin clutch - the two-belt GE's had the transmission; can't remember what the spin speed on the GE is off the top of my head. |

I wanted this bad, but time got away, and I was too late. Then, a wizard tweaked his nose, and it appeared!
Couldn't imagine what you were talking about when you referenced Saturn. And then I saw the monolith--a giant yellow one with a glass window and a gorgeous commercial refrigerator door-like latch, double master control dials, lighted panel AND lighted double sets of six buttons--arriving from the stars and planets of space, both near and deep....
dropped from the sky
falling from heaven
or straight from God, Mother Cosmos, The Biggs Particle
or whatever suits your fancy.
It HEATS during rinses and final spin to prepare for "soft, fluff drying." What a landing ! The charts showing the most basic components are so detailed, right down to the particle of water temps--this one really is out of this world. I loved it, madly. Washer ecstasy! Thank you, J & R. One feels like a pagan telling Benedict the 16th something about God, but one will do it anyway.
Page 11 of the HP Combo Bible says that if you want warmer water to press the heater button which will provide heating during the last 10 minutes of the wash cycle, and, quoting directly, "NOTE: Heating is automatic during rinse and spin cycles if the dry timer is set to go into the drying cycle."
There is a whole section, so minutely detailed, about the heating elements, for pages, in the 30's. Some of it I didn't quite get and will have to re-read.
This out-of-this-world machine also has "airplane style shock absorbers. " with photos. Don't know how common that is. |
