Saginaw Craigslist...Hotpoint Portable DW!!!!!!

Even though there is a striking similarity with GE's mid-1950's top rack design, I believe this is a 1958 D&M Dishwasher. They were produced for various Brands including Whirlpool (I have one), Sears (I have a Kenmore/Cascade magazine ad), and various other companies. Now, up until this point in time, I do not believe that we have seen portable dishwashers with the Hotpoint Brand. Perhaps, Hotpoint engineers worked with D&M and incorporated certain Hotpoint/GE features for these portables - the most obvious one being the Bakelite Impeller with the traditional Hotpoint side wings for drying. My Whirlpool has the standard D&M impeller, but the top rack appears to be the same as the Hotpoint. I am mostly speculating here with my comments. I wish that I had a greater knowledge of the D&M and Hotpoint lines to be able to provide a more definitive response

And on further inspection, the loops in the American Kitchens and Crosley "Roto-Tray" are strikingly similar to the top rack in this Hotpoint Portable. So, now I am a little more convinced that these were late 1950's D&M machines.

OH, and picking up on a comment that John just made regarding the screens around the Impeller on the Hotpoint and GE Dishwashers from this era and earlier - I have NEVER found, on any of my 20 or so machines, an Impeller screen, as depicted in the Use & Care Guides, and Parts Listings. It is my humble opinion that the dealers yanked these screens out of new dishwashers before installing them because they would fill up rather quickly with food particles, thus reducing significantly, the water return flow back to the impeller. Cleaning, especially on the top loading GE machines, would have required removing all of the racks to access the screen for periodic cleaning. Depending on how much pre-rinsing was done, the filter screen potentially would fill up rather quickly. Thus, there would have been a significant reduction in service calls and customer complaints regarding washability issues.

Checkrate/Likes It says 60s, but it AINT!!! 50s got to be, nice looking,. The Listing says: Saginaw Craigslist "Michigan" 1960s Hotpoint portable dishwasher, near mint, "Tri City" It looks to me like late 50s pink inside impeller type.

Checkrate/Likes But that's the upper rack of the pre-bowtie GEs. Poor D&M would do anything for anyone just like a desperate hooker.

Checkrate/Likes Hmmm.... I think it's more hybrid-GE... The square-topped silverware basket might be a DM replacement part - the 'round' racks look so much like the GE mobilemaid. The pink colour is just too much - I love it!

Checkrate/Likes *I gthink it's D&M* Looks to me like the D&M design for the American Kitchens and Crosley dishwashers. However that is a hotpoint impeller. Hotpoint is the only impeller that I have seen with for loss of a better word " wings " that center silverware basket was horrable in the american kitchens model I had. crosley and american kitchens were I think the first to have roto racks and that shows in this model. Also I know that there is an American Kitchens ad for a Portable that looks a lot like this Model. This looks like it was never used because there is no guard for the impeller and it looks to be all there. Hotpoint and GE had guards for the impeller John

Checkrate/Likes 1 Hotpoint was offering front loading portables before this. There are even 27" portables. HP was not really into top loading portables and the newer ones were all GE clones. I did not say it was not a D&M. I just said that the upper rack looked like the upper rack for the pre 57 GE DW. It certainly does not look like the upper rack in the Frigidaire by D&M that Robert found. We had that square Bakelite silver basket in the D&M Frigidaire DW that we only had for a short time in the late 50s because it blew water out the steam vent when it started. In looking at the HP impeller, did anyone notice the broken leading edges? It ain't gonna wash rite like that. I don't think dealers pulled those screens. They would be liable under warranty for replacing them if a customer reported them missing and they offered slight impeller protection. I am more inclined to think they got tossed or lost in the decades of use. The screen is still in my 55 HP. I think we even have a D&M impeller Kelvinator front load DW with the screen around the impeller.

Checkrate/Likes I closed the deal on this one, and it will eventually be making its way to West Peoria. The one I already have like it, has the Whirlpool emblem on it. One lid hinge is broken on the Whirlpool, so perhaps it will become a donor machine for the Hotpoint in case anything starts to go wrong with it. Mike

Checkrate/Likes Interesting Tom. Now that you mention it, the dealers could have been liable if they pulled the screens. BUT, I bet they turned a blind eye if the customers asked if they could pull the screens out themselves! Yes, I too noticed the dings in the impeller, but I forgot to mention it. I also agree - I should have stated that the Top load portables likely were D&M. From "A Walk In The Park": In 1936, Hotpoint introduced the first front loading, single rack dishwasher.
