Hot gas defrost timer needed

Well, unfortunately, our GE Combination fridge with "frost guard" still needs a defrost timer. John Lefever was kind enough to bring one with him when he came to the house and John (coldspot66) was here yesterday to help us with the change-over. The problem is that ours has a thermostat attached that apparently monitors the temp and will cut the hot gas defrost off if the defrosting is done but the timer hasn't kicked back to the compressor yet. In the pic, it's that grey wire-looking thing running across the back of the freezer. It attaches to the back on the other side of the freezer. This isn't removable, and seems to be integral to the whole timer. So, does anyone know of any of these around, or, of a dead Combination that might serve as a donor? I'll be manually kicking the timer into defrost a couple of times a day until then, or emptying the fridge/freezer and manually defrosting, until we can find one or until I get too tired of doing that! The part number appears to be WR9X164. I'm also gonna look up Larry at Modern Parts. Thanks in advance! Chuck

Thanks, Kenny. Yes, it does fall under "control; temperature" apparently. Unfortunately we haven't been diligent about searching for the part so we missed this one. However, I was able to speak with Larry at Modern Appliance. He said we could use the one John Lefever sent us if we wire a limit thermostat in series between the defrost lead from the fridge and the defrost terminal on the new timer. Then the thermostat gets mounted snugly to the coils like the OEM one is. I guess he did it successfully on a Kelvinator. Has anyone else done something like this? If we can't find an OEM one soon we may just go this route. Chuck

*GE Hot Gas Defrost Control* Chuck if you can get the exact part I would go for it, But as Larry and I said the one I gave you will work and you do not need a defrost limit like you do on an electric heater defrost system. The HGD does not have the potential to cause a fire that the electric heater systems do and their is very little plastic in your old refrigerator anyway, and it is over 50 years old and will not last forever anyway, LOL.

Thanks John. Actually, Larry's the one who was telling me that the limitter had to be wired to it. But, with a 10-minute timer, as we've discussed, there shouldn't be a need for any such additional parts. We'll still be looking for an OEM one, but we're gonna install this one in the meantime, which will probably end up being permanent since the OEM ones don't show up. I'm tired of emptying the fridge every week (or 10 days in less-humid weather) to turn it off for a full defrost. So now, all we need to do is figure out the wiring on the OEM one. Does anyone have the wiring diagram for our fridge? This morning I tried a continuity tester to figure out which lead was which, and got continuity on all 3 combinations when I started with the white wire. Should have only been 2 IIRC. So, I tried again with the black... same thing. Tried turning the manual knob into defrost... same thing. So, I can't really figure out which of the wires from the fridge does what at this moment in time. Here's the plate, and thanks in advance for any additional help!
