Has anyone seen or used that portable dryer in the ad? It must be a much older design because it mentions infra-red heat which would mean a perforated drum, something not seen in modern portable dryers. I wonder if it makes more efficient use of the small amount of heat available in a 120 volt dryer by heating the load directly instead of just the air. For things like Perma Press, it could heat the fabrics faster for more efficient wrinkle relaxing or maybe not. Can you imagine the amount of work and the hours it would take to do laundry with those portables? The only way I can see doing it halfway quickly is using the Hoover and spinning stuff almost dry before putting it in that dryer. Using that 5 lb. floor model washer with the available hand cranked wringer and then trying to dry in that portable dryer would probably take more than a day for several loads.

Idea who actually made those? The automatics I mean. They look Whirlpooley on the panel.

I've actually seen a countertop washer. I couldn't have been older than 4. That would make it 1950.

These automatics were made by Franklin - GSW likely at a factory in Grand Rapids, MI.

I've seen these tiny dryers in catalogs and have wanted to see one in person - and of course, play with it. I'll bet it's miserable to use, but if you needed a few pairs of socks, hankies or clean underpants dry quickly, this would work.

Greg, It certainly looks more substantial than the Sunbeam lingerie dryer.

I found one of the Sunbeam dryers at a thrift store ten years ago or so, cute little thing but little more than a toy - that I would have LOVED as a kid!
